Review

Kate DiCamillo, whose BECAUSE OF WINN-DIXIE was a Newbery Honor Book, again explores the difficulty of fitting into a new place. But THE TIGER RISING is even more emotionally affecting as Rob and Sistine, united by their aloneness, grapple with unlocking their own heartaches as they debate whether to free the tiger.—New York Times Book Review, TheThe author delves deeply into the psyches of her cast with carefully choreographed scenes, opting for the economy of poetry over elaborate prose. . . . DiCamillo demonstrates her versatility by treating themes similar to those of her first novel with a completely different approach. Readers will eagerly anticipate her next work.—Publishers Weekly, starred reviewIt deals with the tough issues of death, grieving, and the great accompanying sadness, and has enough layers to embrace any reader.—School Library Journal, starred reviewThe story deftly shows the anxiety and suspense of getting close to someone after experience has taught you that may not be safe to do. DiCamillo's gorgeous language wastes not a single word: spare and taut her sentences spin out, with the Florida mist rising off them, and unspoken words finally said aloud.—BooklistYoung readers who enjoyed DiCamillo's first novel won't be disappointed by her second.—Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books, TheThe brief novel, which features a well realized setting and an almost palpable aura of sadness, has a certain mythic quality.—Horn Book, The. . . the tiger, 'burning bright' with magnificent, feral presence, does make an arresting central image.—Kirkus ReviewsTogether [the characters] learn about trust, friendship, and feelings as they plot to set the tiger free. In the process, they learn another valuable lesson, one that readers won't soon forget. This poignant, powerful story was written by the author of the Newbery Honor book BECAUSE OF WINN-DIXIE.—Dallas Morning NewsDiCamillo, who grew up in Central Florida and wrote the multi-award winning BECAUSE OF WINN-DIXIE, could almost have titled her bittersweet second novel "Because of the Tiger" . . . because of the tiger, Rob and Sistine make the fateful decision that allows Rob and his father to grieve more openly for their loss.—Orlando SentinelPowerfully written by the author of BECAUSE OF WINN-DIXIE, this poignant story is certain to garner accolades on many levels.—Syndicated Column - Kendal Rautzhan

About the Author

Kate DiCamillo says of THE TIGER RISING, "Rob Horton first showed up in a short story I was writing. I finished the story, but apparently Rob wasn’t finished with me. He hung around for weeks afterward, haunting the other stories I was working on. Finally, I said to him, ‘What in the world do you want?’ And he said, ‘I know where there’s a tiger.’ Like Sistine, I said one word back to him, ‘Where?’ THE TIGER RISING is how Rob Horton answered me."

The following eight book reviews were written by a group of fourth grade students who recently read Kate diCamillo’s The Tiger Rising. Enjoy their honest opinions after reading and studying the novel.1.The Tiger Rising is a book about friendship, growth, and trust. The story contains two unemotional misfits with problems in their social lives that end up meeting and overcoming their problems. They end up finding a tiger who brings them together on their journey to help free the tiger. If you want to get the most out of the book then I recommend paying attention to small details. If you do you will better understand the book and I guarantee you will enjoy it more. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.Rob [one of the two main characters] lives in a hotel in Florida with his dad. His mom died of cancer when he was little. Rob is an outcast at his school. He has a rash on his legs and has to stay home from school. So, he has to work at the hotel where he lives. He is afraid to let out his emotions because his past and present were rough.Sistine [the second main character] just recently moved to Florida from Pennsylvania. Her parents got divorced and she lives with her mom. She secretly hopes her dad will come and get her. She hides her emotions about her parents divorce and her tough life. She lets it out by getting in fights at school.Rob and Sistine meet and become good friends. They help each other learn to express their emotions and not keep it all in. They bond through their journey to free a tiger. During their journey, they realize how similar they are and how well they can overcome anything in their way.In conclusion, the Tiger Rising is an amazing book that teaches many lessons. It shows friendship, hard work, growth, trust, and how two people overcame their difficult past.2.The Tiger Rising is a book about a young boy named Rob Horton. Whose life's off track because his mom just passed away and is stuck in a godawful hotel with his cantankerous father. But one day he encounters a lonely tiger sitting in the middle of a cage, he knows there’s something wrong with the scene. He meets a girl named Sistine who is having problems too. They then go on insane adventures. This is a dynamite book for all ages.Especially for 9-12 year olds. This book is about friendship, rough times, and a little bit of mystery.Even if you’re not into that “type” you will still like it, without a doubt. It is a relatively small book, it has 30 chapters but the chapters are small.I loved this book, and I will tell you why.It is so packedful of thrilling excitment. Every time you put the book down you want to pick it up and read more. Every character is different. But you can’t really pick who your favorite is because they're all so fascinating. I loved this book and I know you will too.3.I think that The Tiger Rising is a great book because it has a lot of detail in it. Kate Dicamillo is a phenomenal author that knows and is very experienced in mixing despair and hope. She writes a tale of sadness and friendship. In the book, a boy named Rob Horton was wandering in the woods and found a tiger. A real tiger. Then at school he finds a girl that is in need of friendship. He has a incurable rash on his legs and because of it he gets bullied in school and is sent out of the school by the principal. Rob has a suitcase of thoughts and never thinks about anything, except for the tiger and Sistine. Will that change? Sistine can’t control her anger. Will that change? So in the end, I’ll give this book a 5 star rating.4.The Tiger Rising was a pretty good book. It's about a boy named Rob Horton who doesn't have many friends at school and is very quiet. Robs mom just died so he moved to a motel in florida so they could stop thinking about her where they used to live. Later on in the book rob meets a girl named Sistine Bailey. Sistine had just came down to florida with her mom and is waiting for her dad to come and bring her back to where she really likes, the north. Sistine is a very unique girl, she wears weird clothes and hates almost everybody. The Tiger Rising was a very nice book but made you feel very sad at some points in the story. It was still a very well written and amazing book. I would DEFINITELY recommend this book to a friend or anybody really. I would give this book a five out of five stars for some of these reasons. This book was very nice because it had so much detail and i can see that the writer put lots of effort into it. I liked how the writer made every character so unique and nobody was either alike or just an Average Joe. And the last reason why I liked this book is because of the way they made things at certain times, like since this book is supposed to be sad I thought it was smart to always make it cloudy. And those are the reasons why I LOVED this book.5.I think that Tiger Rising is an awesome book! Even though it was a little slow to start the rest of the book was very interesting. As you get farther and farther into the book you start to get pulled into the story and it is hard to put the book down. Overall I think it is a great book to read.Tiger Rising contains a lot of feelings and emotions. Some of the emotions in the book are loneliness, anger and fear. Rob the main character was lonely because his mom died and his dad wanted him to stop being sad about her death. Sistine another main character was angry because her parents divorced and she was always mad at the world. At the end of the book, Rob was afraid to let the tiger out because he is worried the tiger would eat him but I think it also has to do with being afraid to let his feelings out. After you read this book, you will be so happy you did! It is a fun book to read and it teaches you a lot about feelings and emotions.6.If I were recommending this book to a person, I would say that it was a sad book with an awful ending. Some people say that it has happiness and friendship, I disagree. If the book was about friendship, wouldn’t there be at least three or four friendchips? Yes, but this book only has one. They also say it is about happiness. To me this is a joke and a lie. Throughout the story, it is mostly crying, mangling people, and many other awful things that I don’t even want to mention, like when that kid in Rob’s class tripped him and called him a retard. To those who don’t what a retard is, I’m just saying that it is a horrific and rude thing to say. I also heard that this is a book for all ages, and I also am very startled that writing like that should be in a children’s book. I liked The Tale Of Despereaux, and I want to read Flora and Ulysses, but this book really surprises me. I would give this book a one out five stars, because I think this is an awful book for children.7.In my mind The Tiger Rising is an amazing book about a boy named Rob Horton. His mother dies so he has to move to Jacksonville Kentucky he lives at the kentucky star motel with his dad. Rob has no friends and one day when he was getting on the bus he saw a tiger locked in a cage with blood around its face. Then he meets a girl named Sistine. He gained a friendship with her. This book is extremely sad but very interesting. I was very mad when my teacher told us that we had to take a break from the book and left us on a cliffhanger. I think this book deserves a 5 star rating for how amazingly written it is. This book is sad but very interesting. I recommend this book for ajes 9 and older i would not recommend this for a second grader because it is sad and they would not understand the book. But this book was one of the best and most well written books i've ever red. There are also a lot of bumps in the story with Rob and Sistine.8.The Tiger Rising is a book about a boy named Rob, who holds a lot of his sad feelings inside of him because his mother died and his dad will not let him talk about her or be sad. He has recently moved to a new town that he does not like and has a hard time fitting in with the other kids or even his teacher at school. Rob eventually meets a new girl named Sistine. Sistine has problems of her own and does not like her new town either. She wants to move back to Philadelphia and wants her dad to come and get her.Rob finds a tiger locked in a cage and when he becomes friends with Sistine, he finally shows her the tiger. They both know how the tiger feels being locked up because they are sort of feeling the same way in their own lives. Eventually, Rob is hired to feed the tiger by a man named Beauchamp. Beauchamp is not a nice man and doesn't even care about the tiger. Sistine is always trying to talk Rob into letting the tiger go.Sometimes trying to figure out how Rob and Sistine were feeling by understanding the tiger was confusing. It was nice to see how Rob and Sistine were able to make each other feel better and be able to talk to each other. In the end, Rob has a fight with his dad until they can both talk about how much they miss Rob's mother and Sistine knows that her dad really isn't coming back for her.I think that it is kind of a sad book but a good book and I would recommend reading it.

As I was reading this book, I thought how well-written it is and interesting. In fact, it help my interest enough so that I read it in two sittings. Unfortunately, I was reading about three YA novels at the time and found it difficult to recall the content. I looked back and remembered that it was about children who are fighting emotional battles and find healing through friendships with peers and even exotic animals. Yes, there is a real tiger in the story. I would have it in my classroom library and recommend it to all of my students. It is about sixth grade or below reading level.

A great book for reluctant readers, a read-aloud, or a group read. Consider art activities with it - when scenes are described, students draw what they read, or sculpt with clay. It helps reluctant readers visualize the story. Super for grades 4-5.

The Tiger Rising is a very well written book. Kate DiCamillo is one of my favorite authors and this book did not disappoint. It is a book that my students and I could not get enough of. Each day at the end of our read aloud time, my students would beg for just one more chapter, or one more page, or one more paragraph, or one more sentence, or one more word! We enjoyed this book because there is so much symbolism and so many problems that young children can connect to throughout the entire book.I highly recommend reading this book with a group of children because it allows for a lot of discussion about character traits, motivations, struggles, symbolism, and theme.

As an elementary school teacher I take the time to find books that my students can relate too, this book encompasses almost every obstacle and fear that many of our kiddos face today. Dicamillo offers an interactive read aloud that not only engages powerful thinking but empowers students to make connections within themselves. Her ability to bring real world issues and characters to life in a phenomenal setting is unprecedented. I have read many of her other books and truly she has mastered the art of writing rich literature that both children and adults can identify with in a deeply personal way.

I think I like The Tiger Rising better in retrospect than I did when I read it. It's a lot like looking back on how your parents raised you and realizing that all the go to bed, eat your vegetables, and occasional spankings weren't random acts of cruelty but rather a part of a plan implemented out of love. Likewise it took me awhile to recover from the cold shock of Kate DiCamillo's ending to appreciate all she had done in this book. The Tiger Rising is the story of two children: shy, sad Rob who has recently lost his mother, and stubborn, sharp Sistine whose father ran off with another woman abandoning her in a small, southern town she hates. Both hate school and long for friendship . . . enter the tiger.A tiger does not belong in a rusty, iron cage behind a southern hotel, but that is where he is, and the wonder of this creature captures the children. What is there to do but allow the tiger to escape? The writing is truly amazing. As Rob puts it (about Sistine, but it applies to Ms. DiCamillo):"Her words sounded the way all those things made him feel, as if the world, the real world, had been punched through, so that he could see something wonderful and dazzling on the other side of it."Also, I always hesitate before calling someone a Christian author. It's as if I think the moment I do a P.R. Agent will write me and inform me that actually she is a Shiite Muslim, so I won't call Kate DiCamillo a Christian author. I will say, however, that she is an author Christians can rest comfortably in and have no fear. She is a great writer.

I read this book in my fourth-grade class and the students love it. There are a wide range of topics that can be addressed in this book. I will definitely be reading this book again and again!

Can’t wait to read this to my 5th graders. The figurative language and themes are phenomenal.

“A band of brothers in an American tank . . . [Adam] Makos drops the reader back into the Pershing’s turret and dials up a battle scene to rival the peak moments of Fury. . . . Brilliant . . . [a] gripping action narrative . . . a thoroughly enjoyable battle story, and a tribute to the everyman warrior.”—The Wall Street Journal“The tension, death, and courage that were everyday experiences for American tankers fill the pages of Makos’s book. This moving story of bravery and comradeship is an important contribution to WWII history that will inform and fascinate both the general reader and the military historian.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review) “[Spearhead is] a compelling, exciting adventure . . . I run a WW2 library page on Instagram and received an advanced copy of Spearhead in exchange for an honest review. The acclaimed author has done it again. Finding a fantastic set of characters from both the American and German side, following their fight until their stories entwine on the battlefield. The book follows the stories of tank gunners Clarence and Gustav through the European theater until their wars collide in Cologne as the Allies break into Germany. Adam Makos’ brilliant and descriptive storytelling paints a clear picture of the men and the battles. You can visualize these men and their crews inside the tanks, facing the perils of armored warfare. Adam Makos and his team spent a great deal of time researching the battlefields, on the ground with the veterans and this is evident in the amazing level of detail he has put to paper. As well as the two gunners we meet other characters from infantry and armored units as they fight together through some of the wars epic battles including the Ruhr Pocket where 325,000 German troops were captured. The reader is taken inside the tanks, through the trenches, streets and fields with these men who are swept up in the tragedy of war. A fantastic book that reads beautifully, anyone can enjoy this from WW2 enthusiasts to people who are new to the genre. I loved it and I’m sure you will too.

This book arrived earlier today and I began leafing through it to see if I liked it or not. Turns out I did so I sat down and read it from cover to cover.Wasn't sure if an accurate story of the soldiers from Company E, 32d Armored Regiment, 3d Armored Division, along with their supporting foot troops of the 36th Armored Infantry Regiment, who fought in the Battle of Cologne would be accurately told by someone who relied on interviews rather than wartime documents. But a quick look at the endnotes shows Makos did rely on wartime documents. In fact, he did an excellent job in terms of getting it right, with only one minor gaffe in the entire book (mistakenly identified the German Seventh Army as the Seventeenth Army)Adam Markos has done an absolutely magnificent job capturing those events and taking the story further by examining the postwar experiences of the panzer crewmembers and US tankers during a dramatic afternoon captured by a Signal Corps motion picture photographer and witnessed by Stars and Stripes correspondent Andy Rooney. For those interested in more than Cologne, the author begins the tale by recounting events at the Mons Pocket in September 1944 before taking the narrative through the capture of Cologne and beyond.I am gauging this book's worth from the perspective of a professional historian who previously served in the US Army as a tanker in a number of different units between 1979 and 2006. Reading about Clarence Smoyer and Gustav Schaefer meeting after the war in the same square where they both fired upon a fleeing civilian car with tragic results almost brought tears to my eyes. It was very touching to see how wartime foes could become close comrades decades later. SPOILER ALERT - Herr Schaefer was not in the Panther whose destruction was captured on film. He was in one of the other two panzers in Cologne city center that day.Highly recommended especially for those who aren't deeply interested in World War 2 or armored warfare. This will prove to be an enjoyable and interesting read for those folks.A number of photos are included, some are recognizable stock pictures that have appeared in other books but some were donated by veterans for the book. Some maps are included, but they give a "soda straw" rather than a wider view of specific events.

I just received my copy today, I had to order this great book, after seeing a review about Spearhead in The Wall Street Journal. As I thumb through my copy, I know I will not be disappointed! I am a student of history, and keenly appreciate reading about WW II, especially American actions in France and Germany. My dear Uncle was a surviving combat medic under General Devers and later with General Anthony McCauliffe going into Germany. ... years ..later he reconciled with our German cousins . For me much of this is very personal in a familial sense. Author, Adam Makos is a gifted writer with much more to offer in the future. I must read his other works. The type set makes this edition easy to read. The colorized photo on the cover brings the past to life. The photos, maps and illustrations are very worthy additions to the narrative. The notes, index, sources, etc. are complete.Well done Random House, and a special thanks to Adam Makoas.!! WELL DONE!!

Wow! This is the best book I have read since Adam Makos' A Higher Call. It is an intense and emotional journey through the end of WWII. I knew the boys in the Allied armored divisions had a rough job, but this really puts their fight into a new personal light.I remember watching the film on the duel with the Panther as a kid and always wanting to know more, now you can. This book will leave you saying wow and probably rubbing your eyes a bit at the end.I was sitting on the edge of my office chair on numerous occasions glued to the pages reading as fast I could to see what would happen next. I can't believe the things these boys went through to defeat the Third Reich. I love WWII history and I now have a much stronger appreciation of our WWII tanker veterans like Clarence Smoyer and his armored infantry comrades. All I can say is Clarence's story should be a movie! Do your self a favor and read this book!

I had the opportunity to hear this story sitting with Clarence Smoyer back in 2003 at a 3rd Armored Division Reunion. As the President of the 32nd Cavalry & Armor Association this story is part of our history as a Combat Cavalry and Armor Regiment. Adam Makos has written a great book of the story of "Spearhead" the Story of Cpl. Clarence Smoyer (Eagle 7). Clarence served in Easy Company 2nd Battalion 32nd Armor Regiment as a gunner on a Pershing Tank. His story tells of the Battle of Cologne and the tank battle that took place in front of the Kölner Dom, officially Hohe Domkirche Sankt Petrus, English: Cathedral Church of Saint Peter. This battle was a turning point of the First Army/ 3rd Armored Division invasion into Germany. I recommend this book to be part of your reading. VICTORY OR DEATH!!!
