This is a good read. I think that people need to know that Satan is alive and horribly well in this world and he uses everything at his disposal to hurt anyone who is not one of his own. This book reveals some of the ways Satan comes into our lives to hurt us and helps us to be aware of what to look for so we can prepare for attacks.

He speaks in every day English. It is an elegant speech. I find it thrilling that it is like listening to a soliloquy. I keep wanting to speak up and often do. Yes, I have interrupted Preet Bharara.This is not just the story of his year in and out of office. This is his story, not the story of Barack Obama and Donald Trump. It is a story about who we are and who we should be. It is also about the real world -- it is about integrity and leadership. The meaning of truth is under fire: "The creeping contempt for truth" is terrifying.The Southern District of New York makes me think of Tim Russert saying: 'Florida, Florida, Florida.' At some point the entire drama will end up playing out in the center of the world, not Florida this time, but the Southern District of New York.

I'm a few chapters into the book, and I'm a bit dismayed that PB didn't have some kind of editor -- or at least it seems as though he didn't. He makes a point, then makes it again, then repeats the facts that comprised the story that led to the point, then makes the point again. It's a good-hearted book, full of valuable lessons that unfortunately I felt beaten over the head with. I would like to see PB appointed to the US Supreme Court, but at the same time offer my services as a reader/editor should he decide to write another book.

This is a beautifully written and thoughtful book about aspects of the criminal justice system that should be of interest to everyone. As a lawyer myself--but not one who is involved in criminal law--I found the book fascinating because it not only explains the nuts and bolts of the system, but uses stories of real people involved in it to bring it alive.There is also something comforting, in this fraught time, about Preet's calm, measured, even humorous tone, both in writing and speech. I have both the Kindle and Audible editions and recommend them both.

This is not a Trump bashing book. Instead it is an inspiring ramble through the legal process. It looks at the process and mindset of how justice should work. I am a scientist, and I was especially impressed by how much legal investigation and prosecution has in common with lab research. Patience, continual questioning of data and bias, and the necessity to admit when you are wrong; and of course, pursuit of truth.

I enjoyed Preet's take on our justice system. He explains the way things are supposed to work (as opposed to the way Hollywood shows it), and how hard the decisions can actually be for the prosecutors, defenders, and judges. He uses actual cases to illustrate his points, and finds a way to explain the intricacies of our legal system in a way even non-lawyers can understand.

i found several passages pendantic and often thought Kindle had made unexpected jumps to sections i had read. Great book, I just don't care for the part on killing Chickens. I could never kill anything and certainly couldn't slaughter anything. I'm no vegetarian, but it's just a personal thing where that is concerned. I would however be one before I'd kill an animal myself or even watch it. Outside of that chapter the rest of the book is fabulous & has great ideas. It did also inform me as to what the chicken industry is doing in our country and it did influence how I will purchase eggs now and in the future. I would however like to comment that the section on raising chickens for eggs was much appreciated & could be useful to anyone. It includes what to feed them, how to house them, when to get the eggs from the nests, what to do to prevent vitamin difficencies etc.. The gardening part of the book is well thought out and is an easy read. Much information is included, including how to collect your own seed so you do not need to always purchase seeds every year which is awesome :o The book also tells you how to fertilize etc. I combined this book with techniques from Container Gardening and 4 Season Harvest & have had much success in a patio garden that is 14X8 and have never grown anything in my life. I've been eating fresh produce for the entire summer now, and have a fall garden currently growning so it has been great and will continue to be wonderful through the winter. I do not plan to always live in a condo so that is one reason why I went ahead and incorporated techniques from this book into my current gardening plan. It's an easy read and can be used in manhy ways other than out in the country :o)

I have read maybe fifty books on farming techniques, and had really high expectations for this one. Sadly, it is one of three books I have asked a refund on since I started buying books on Amazon back around 2001. I was dismayed, disgusted and disappointed by the complete lack of respect this writer showed his readers. Instead of illustrating his ideas, and giving us details, each chapter followed the same formula: " A: here is an idea I stole from someone else. B: this is who I stole it from. C: brief summary of stolen idea. D: want to know more? Read a book from the original author of the idea I stole!" I'm not making this up! Please save yourself the money and buy "Urban Homestead " by Kelly Coyne or "Gaia's Garden" by Toby Hemenway or better yet, subscribe to Mother Earth News instead. These are only 3 of the myriad of truly helpful publications you would be better off buying. BTW, Mother Earth News has a wonderful website wth free info. So does Urban Homestead. Forewarned is forearmed. Yards are for food, not chemicals. :-)

This was quite a disappointment. We have a couple of acres that we're planning on farming when we retire and we figured that if you can do it on a quarter acre then it should be easy to grow most of what we need on our property so we bought this in print and kindle. We should have saved our money on both.The book completely fails to deliver on the promise, in fact, there's almost no mention of how to grow intensively and virtually no pictures of the author or anyone else actually doing it. There are a few stock photos of vegetables and then maybe 20 or 30 copies of the same photo of long grass in the book. What's up with that? I eat grass - once converted to beef - but all those grass pictures could have been replaced with pictures of his own 1/4 acre intensive garden - assuming he actually has one. It's not clear at all from the book.90% of the content of the book is standard articles easily available in any gardening book, magazine, website, or a dozen other places on how to create compost, how to plant, how to harvest, etc... nothing at all that is unique or special to an intensive garden. Look at urbanhomestead dot org for an example of great pictures of intensive gardening. You'll find nothing at all like that in this book.

While I've maintained small gardens and potted plants for years, for a good 5 years I've casually kept a 1,000 square foot garden. I've mostly winged it, sometimes with surprisingly good results, other times with dismal harvests. But, in any event, never consistent year over year results.I picked up this book to take my gardening to the next level and broaden my horizons a bit. And, in short, I'm very satisfied with the insights and guidance I've gleaned from this book. I'd go so far as to say that while you don't need a background in gardening to benefit from this book, I think this book is a perfect fit for people in my situation. Here's pros and cons from my perspective.Pros:- The content of each chapter is very well organized, with concepts building onto one another very neatly.- And for that matter, the broader subject matters of the chapters takes one through the process of planning, preparing, selecting, timing, managing, etc. most everything one would need to successfully grow a garden.- This book strikes a good balance between giving you the key information you need for any one aspect of self sufficient gardening, but not inundating you with to much detail. In other words, this book threads the needle on delivering a lot of helpful information, while still feeling like an easy read.- I've seen other reviews for this book that complain that the author pretty much rips off others ideas and re-packages them for profit. I read quite a bit, and have over the years seen serious examples of what these other reviewers are talking about. But, in the case of this book, while the author informs on alternative (and even competing models) for gardening, the author always informs the user on what in his experience has or has NOT worked from various models, how he has modified some of those ideas to work in his growing climate, and where he completely parts ways from others' techniques and espouses his own approach (including very clear instruction on how to use his modified or totally unique processes).- Finally, where possible, the author provides the equivalent of 'modified workouts' for those less fit (my words, not his) in their gardening abilities. In other words, the author provides sufficient detail on what might be the most efficient and beneficial approach to say irrigation or composting, but then across those and other subjects covered in the book, he provides a less expensive/quicker/initially easier alternative for those lacking the time, resources, space, skills, etc. to fully implement the best possible approach for one aspect or another of gardening. For example, as I'll be looking to expand my garden this next spring, I fully intend to utilize some of the quicker soil prep techniques offered up in this book for use in a pinch while I build up my long-term composting and soil amendment routines.Cons:- While some of the chapters really cover all the bases for the targeted subject matter (i.e. plant spacing, soil prep, etc.). Others give you just enough to run with, but definitely leave you wanting more. A good example of this would be Chapter 7 ("Time and Yield"). While the author definitely gives a good broad overview of timing techniques (i.e. succession planting, timed planting, interplanting etc.), for such an important subject matter, I was surprised (in a disappointed kind of way) by just how short this chapter was. I live in Michigan, with a relatively short growing season. I see this topic as critical for people in shorter growing zones like me, and apart from a quick overview of each of the techniques used to maximize productivity, and a handful of real-world examples of plant groups that work well for things like succession planting (taking into consideration their hardiness in colder climates), this chapter really leaves readers wanting.- While this book is beautifully illustrated, there's no doubting that the abundance of pretty pictures of garden produce, chickens, tools, etc. just serves as fill to make the book feel a bit more substantial in size than it need be. I don't want to over play this point, as A LOT of the illustrations (pictures/graphics/tables) are pertinent to the content of the book (and in any event, some amount of artwork is always nice to have), I think you could still produce this book, with many beautiful illustrations, and reduce it from its current 227 pages (including the index and notes pages) down to maybe 175 pages.

The only possible review is for the Uplift sextology, but this book from the second triplet of Uplift books very subtly continues the story of the first triplet. Most of it is actually spent developing an entirely new world, one where a number of races that have for one reason or another fled from the general Uplift-oriented trans-galactic civilization have all planted themselves, thrown away most of their technology and have painfully learned to live together. A lot of the story is told from the point of view of children of all of these alien races who have formed a strong friendship that proves key to the development of the rest of the triplet.About the only complaints I have of the six uplift books so far are: a) the very first book, Sundiver, seems very disconnected from the sextology per se. It is more like a standalone prequel. b)The second two books are much more connected, but the third in particular can almost stand alone as all of the characters from the second are pretty much absent. c) Brightness Reef is at first glance completely disconnected from all three of the books, but as you proceed to read you realize that there is a strong connection to the second (but not so much the third) book. And you have to read the fourth and fifth for it to all start to come together. d) One is STILL left with lots of loose ends dangling at the end of the sixth book. We all await the happy day that David Brin returns to his uplifting muttons and brings us the next three books, hopefully books that illuminate what happens on the world introduced in Brightness Reef, reveals to us where and how the 6 (!) orders of life work out the crisis that ends the sixth book, and of course, hopefully manages a happy ending with those pesky humans and their home world not blown to smithereens by all of the races that apparently are out to destroy them all because they found critical evidence concerning the Progenitors. Maybe even with those pesky humans establishing that the Galactic Library is utterly corrupted the exact same way that the Internet is being corrupted now, with noise that overwhelms the signal and with so MUCH information that even with sophisticated searches, it is effectively useless.

I knew the rating I assigned would be valid before I read the first word. Brin's work I would place at the top of my list, along with Iain Banks (Culture), Stephen Baxter (Xeelee), Alastair Reynolds (Revelation Space), C.J. Cherryh (Alliance Union) and there ilk. These are greats in my estimation.His writing, like prose and poetry, flows at time, with a rhythm, which makes the reading effortless.Sometimes the complexity of the characters and species/beings forces one to backtrack to absorb or create a visual representation in one's mind of the characters but once this construct is established, the flow begins.For me, a truly enjoyable read. Now on to the 2nd book in this 3 book series.

Inhabited space is controlled by a billions of years old hierarchy of space-faring races and the highest value is any race of pre-sentient creatures that may be "uplifted" to full sentience, thereby making the race performing this service a "patron". Those on the top of the longest chains of patronage are the most respected and most powerful races. Those on the bottom as "client" races are paying off their "uplifting" by serving for up to 100,000 years as servants of their patrons. Humanity has only joined this society within the past few hundreds of years as a possible "wolfling" race, that has brought itself up by its bootstraps. Most galactic citizens, including many humans, do not believe in the possibility and think humanity must have some ancient patron that has been forgotten in the mists of time. This is the setting of the entire "Uplift" series. An easy to read, yet highly imaginative series. And a rousing good space opera!

In his first three uplift novels Brin concentrated on introducing the galactic players (Sundiver) uplifted Dolphins (Startide Rising) and uplifted Chimps (The Uplift War).Now he introduces us to a new world populated by five different and interesting races. He shows us the world through the eyes of Hoon, Traeki, Urs, G'kek, Qhuen and Human. He shows us a fallow world which is recovering from civilization, and also introduces the concept of the "Path of Redemption" a slide back from civilization to primitivism.Backing up this world is the fear of being found tresspassing on a fallow world by galactic agencies, and the threat to Humans that carries over from the first series, the great secret that the Dolphins found which is causing galaxy wide conflict.The climax of this book is towards the end and is a pointer to the next in the series. I cannot wait to see where the story develops, so I am hooked enough to buy the next installment.

The choppiness of the scenes distracted from the overall scope of the story, rather than enhancing it as the author apparently intended. You go from past to present, which covers a short but undefined period of time - probably about 3 months, back and forth with no clue until you get well into the chapter where you are in the timeline. The characters are fairly well thought out, but not well explored. The concept is quite novel, for me anyway. A planet left fallow to develop its own pre-sentient species through evolution. Bands of refugees from seven races of different physiognomies each come to the planet to hide. After generations of warring amongst themselves, they finally form a common bond and society. Then come some pirates looking to steal some pre-pre-sentient species from the planet. The ersatz natives and the pirates now have to figure out how to keep each other from spilling the beans. Worth a read, but not a must-buy.
