This book is more about the author's journey with God than it is about the family from Somalia that she meets. The synopsis doesn't even say anything about religion, so I wasn't expecting it. Other than that, this book was good.
I am impressed that Sarah befriended the Somali refuge family, and she writes pretty well about them. But I fear they serve her own emotional needs as much or more than she helps them. I am so sorry she faced severe breast cancer at a very young age and felt she had little support from either her church or family or friends in the very difficult time she went through this. But she comes across as a drama queen. So much is about her and her anger and questions toward God, and she goes back to her unmet needs over and over again. If it were not for wanting to know what happened to the family, I would have our the book down and not finished it. The writing is disjointed, going back and forth between short accounts of her interactions with this family and her own past with not feeling affirmed as a woman both growing up and in her church and friendships in the midst of very real pain coming from her breast cancer. I really would not recommend the book.
As a physician, I am intrigued by how patients cope with cancer. Sarah Thebarge makes the invisible visible in this intertwined story of her own breast cancer biography and the story of a Somali refugee family. I recently had the opportunity to work with the author in a developing country. Her story told in The Invisible Girls is raw and unrestrianed, which adds to the genuine tone. The story sucked me in, especially with the short chapters, which always bekoned me to read just one more chapter. She does a masterful job of her desciptions of the Somali family, so that the mental images are beautiful, heart wrenching, and makes your heart fill with compassion for their struggles.
Told from the perspective of a religious Christian woman - whether that's a pro or a con for another reader will be up to them. For me, it was simply the narrator's sharing of who she is, and didn't come across as preachy; I didn't mind it at all.I'd love to hear more of the story of the other family in the book, the Somali mother and daughters. But, that's not my story to know; it's theirs, and they didn't share more detail of it here.The story resonated with me on multiple levels, and much of my life follows much of this.And at the end of the day, I was glad I went ahead and picked this as a place to immerse myself today.
A good book about a girl who suffered much tragedy but found helping others made her forget about herself. She truly forgot her problems when she met an immigrant family and began helping them to adjust to life in America. It gives insight into their needs and how to help foreigners cope in their new enviroment. A particularly loved book because the author is donating its proceeds to help the little girls in the story attend college. gets to her and th is country
The story of these immigrants and the amazing thing she does for them is great. For my taste the discussion with god and her own situation was too much of the same. It’s a question of taste. But bravo for living a strong and amazingly generous life.
This book is AMAZING. This is the first "fun read" I have been able to read in a while. I bought it hoping to be able to read it across 2 weeks, instead I read it in 2 days! Sarah goes back and forth between her childhood, her cancer journey, and her time with the "Invisible Girls". Very well written, and the chapters are short making it easy to drop it for a few to go tend to real life as needed.
I really enjoyed this book. I wished it was able to relate more about the fate of the Invisible Girls. I hope they are all still doing well. Sarah is a remarkable person, turning her own horrendous medical problems into a triumph of the human spirit. I really admire her for getting through her own ordeals, working in the medical filed helping others, and then taking on the huge task of acclimatizing the Somali family to the US. She gave of her time, money and love.The fact that the profits from this book will go towards the girls' college funds is amazing.
