I've been looking for ways to deal with the fact that I didn't learn how to spell when I was a kid, and I've been looking for decades. I'm a bit unusual because I cracked the reading code when I was very young and was reading way above age level even before I got out of grade school. But the spelling fell aside, in part because of the way they taught spelling when I was a kid, or rather did not teach it.Basically their method was to have you learn every word in the English language one word at a time. Reading was by see and say, a truly rotten method for anyone with a learning disability. I have dyslexia, so I have a learning disability.This book was written for adults with dyslexia. It might work for adults in general, or at least I think so. I haven't actually done the program yet, but I've already learned a lot just reading the beginning material. I'll get to my own problem words in a few days. I'm already collecting them.Some of the things they suggest are things I've done, but what makes this book special is that it is ORGANIZED. So far there have been no spelling rules, or almost none. I expect that I ought to locate a set of rules too. They might have done better if they had put a set of rules in the back of the book even though they don't really like teaching with them. But there is no question that, although it is not perfect, I've been actively looking for this book for 30 or 40 years, and here it is. Finally!*****It has been two weeks since I wrote the review. I've done their weekly exercise twice now. And I've learned 10 words (5 each week) that were special problems for me. The system works.

My step son is dislexic and this book has been a tremendous help to him. Even though he had special classes at school, they basically taught him NOTHING - Thank you very much John Glenn High School in Michigan....thanks for nothing!!! Collect your government money for special ed. and then don't have it. he learned more from this book than he learned at your school in 4 years!!!

It helps you to learn words without spelling rules sense most good spellers use their memory to spell words, not rules.

I have learned a lot. I like how it breaks down the words, and theres a lot of examples to help. I would strongly recommend this.

Book for school. Much more affordable then buying it at the school.

If you sew, appreciate custom made items or are looking for inspiration, this is the book for you. Suzanne Perron leaves nothing to the imagination when it comes to gorgeous dresses and what it takes to go from a sketch to the finished dress. The only down side is that unlike the book Bridal Couture by Susan Khalje there are no how-tos. But the photographs alone are worth the price of the book.

i am a technical designer who's been wanting to broaden my skills with making lush evening and wedding gowns. i was a little hesitant about buying this book in the first place, i was under the impression that it was a technical book but the description was vague on that subject. well i got the book and while disappointed that it wasn't a technical book i still kept it because it gave good information on conducting fittings and dealing with clients. while also having pictures of the process of making the gowns. she gives out a lot of good information on the preparation, foundation, and work it takes to make these one of a kind gowns. i hope in the future the author does a technical book cause i would totally snatch that up.

This lovely book goes far beyond just pretty pictures of carnival and wedding gowns. Conception, clients, intricate construction are integral parts of this beautifully executed volume. As a bonus, our museum here currently has an exhibit of some of Ms. Perron's gowns and I was fortunate to see them 'up close and personal.' If you are a seamstress who constructs gowns of any kind, you will adore this book.

Well worth the money if your a fan of Suzanne Perron; you'll probably enjoy looking at her dresses and love this book but, in reading it, I found I'm not! I found her life story less than engaging (unusual, I'll read just about anything and I enjoy reading about crafty/artisty types) and I found her dresses quite unattractive. The section on the technical side of creating her dresses was interesting but too short to be very useful but was the only part that really held my interest.(If she ever publishes a book on the subject I'll buy it immediately.)A disappointment for me but a beautifully presented book that would probably please others very much.

In comparing this book with, say Goldberg's "Genetic Algorithms..." (may be the most popular genetic algorithms text), this book reads more like a German habilitation thesis (which I imagine it may have served as such), where as Goldberg's book seems more of a light introduction for the mathematically uninitiated. Indeed, Back's book seems quite scholarly with lots of useful references, and gives a good introduction to not only genetic algorithms, but also to evolutionary strategies (a paradigm that is most applicable to Euclidean-type search spaces) and evolutionary programming(simular to ES and not to be confused with genetic programming).I found Chapters 1 and 2 quite good, in that Chapter 1 presented the biological motivations for evolutionary computing along with a brief introduction to the theory of computation and computational complexity, while Chapter 2 gave a very good introduction to the above-mentioned evolutionary computing paradigms. The remainder of the book reads more like a report on the author's experiments in evolutionary computing.It is important to note that Goldberg's book does not cover Evolutionary Strategies, which I have found to be a more fruitful approach since it is specifically designed for Euclidean space where many if not most interesting optimization problems are formulated in.Finally, I offer bit of advice for those who plan to read through this book. Some of the definitions are stated with such generality that they seem very opaque upon first reading. It is very important to understand them, so do not give up! Once the defintions are understood, the algorithms will seem much easier to comprehend. In fact, the algorithms have a very simple outline:i) initialize populationii) while the terminating condition is not yet met: recombine to form new population members, mutate the population members, select the most fit population members to form the next generation. The partial analyses provided for the algorithms can be skipped on first reading.

Although this book is much less popular than Goldberg's and Mitchell's, it is the most complete reference on evolutionary algorithms in my opinion. If you're looking only for an introduction to EAs, this may not be the perfect book for you (the 2 other ones are more concise) but if you're seeking a detailed review of foundations of EAs, this book is excellent. It provides mathematical insight, and examples of how to implement such algorithms.
