About the Author

Brian W. Stolarz is a criminal defense attorney. He's worked for the prominent white-collar criminal defense boutique in New York, Morvillo, Abramowitz, Grand, Iason & Anello, and the international law firm, K&L Gates LLP, in Washington, D.C. Stolarz was also a Staff Attorney for the Criminal Defense Division of The Legal Aid Society in Brooklyn, New York, where he served as counsel to hundreds of indigent defendants facing all types of criminal offenses.Stolarz has received several awards for his dedication to pro bono service, including the Pro Bono Legal Service Award from the John Carroll Society and the 2014 Caritas Award, the highest honor awarded by Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington in recognition of work for the indigent and oppressed.Stolarz is a member of the Criminal Justice Act Felony Panel in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia and the District of Maryland, a member of the Alumni Council of the Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law, and a member of the Board of Directors of Texas Defender Service.Currently a partner with LeClair Ryan in Alexandria, Virginia, Stolarz is the head of the Compliance, Investigations, and White Collar Practice Team. An epic, personal tale, dramatic in the way only true stories can be. As an attorney, I alternated between nodding my head in solemn agreement with the author's sound and persuasive arguments, and shaking my head in horror at the incompetent muck offered by the state of Texas. As a human being, I began with shuddering outrage at the injustice of Dewayne's story, but ended in tears at the unbreakable bond between two men who started as attorney and client, but ended as friends and spiritual brothers. As uplifting as Dewayne's ending is, the grueling struggle to get to that ending should infuriate you. Definitely, you should buy this book. Absolutely, you should read it. But even more than that, you should let it be an inspiration to you, a call to further action.

I could not put this book down!! The author does a fantastic job of telling his and Dewayne's story with accuracy and humanity. Sadly Dewayne's story is not as uncommon as we would like to think, and it is crucial that stories like Dewayne are told and heard and read. This book captures a reader's interest and heart and inspires him or her to think of ways to help others like Dewayne (reminiscent of Bryan Stevenson's Just Mercy). It gives us a glimpse of the dark underside of our criminal justice system and confronts uncomfortable topics like race, poverty, prosecutorial misconduct and capital punishment without lecturing and also manages to leaves the reader inspired to do more. There is a message of hope and optimism and faith despite the tragic miscarriage of justice that provides the basis for the book.

The story of DeWayne Brown's experience with the US justice system, as beautifully detailed in the book, is disappointing. Unfortunately it's not at all surprising. Thankfully, a group of dedicated professionals, led by the compassionate author, sought to right a wrong that should never have happened in the first place. The recounting of the crime, trial and subsequent release of Mr. Brown is eloquent, and intertwined with other relevant educational cases. The author is not afraid to show his own vulnerability and tell this powerful story from a truly human perspective. The most important lesson I learned is the power of tenacity and grace. DeWayne Brown and Brian Stolarz both embody those principles in their every day life.

Brian Stolarz isn't just everything you'd want your lawyer to be (brilliant, dedicated, ferociously hard working, a good listener, a good counselor, and a friendly person with a sense of humor), he's everything you'd want your storyteller to be (witty, perceptive, insightful, reflective, and funny). This is a must-read for everyone who's ever thought about life "on the other side". On the other side of the tracks, on the other side of the fence, on the other side of the glass partition, basically on the other side of where most of us live every day. Brian tells a gripping story about confronting insurmountable odds and overcoming them through perseverence, dedication, prayer and - most of all - friendship. Buy this book. Give this book as a gift to someone you love. You won't regret it.

As a trial attorney, a long-time supporter of the death penalty, and a Republican, this book has changed me forever. It is extremely well written and, hopefully, may serve to change the opinions of many prosecutors and some in the judiciary. I was horrified to read what Justice Scalia had written about an innocent man, condemned to death for a crime he never committed , a man he knew was innocent and yet, allowed to be executed. Justice Scalia wrote many great opinions during his time on SCOTUS , but that one was not one of them! Shame on you, Justice Scalia, shame! Read this book, it will change your mind.

Excellent book! Brian and all the attorneys involved deserve praise for freeing an innocent man.

I would recommend this book to anyone. Everyone should be aware of the embarassment of the justice system, particularly in Texas, especially as it pertains to the death penalty. This book made me angry, frustrated, and in the end it made me cry tears of relief. If only everyone had someone to fight for them the way Brian fought for Dewayne.

When I read the address of the apartments where Dewayne lived, I had to read this story. From 1959 to 1969 I had lived only a few blocks from his home! I came to care about him as the author had. I had no real opinion about the death penalty but now I see clearly why it must be abolished. Oh, the corruption in the system I had always believed in!

My 12 year old daughter wants to be a fashion designer. I bought her this book to add to her fashion library. I wanted her to know many of these designers. There are some standards such as Chanel but some more modern designers as well. She loved it and reads it all the time. I'm very happy with the book and recommend it to anyone who likes to look at fashion and wants to learn a little bit about the different designers.

I adore Dita & when I found out about this book is bought one. It is simply gorgeous! Alot larger than I was expecting and a very interesting read, even though I've only finished 2 chapters so far. I love all the little details that she's sharing with this book...so interesting. Thanks to the seller for an amazing buy for a girl on a budget!! Love it!!!

I stalked my mailman intensely today. I checked the mail 12 times, but of course it came while picking kids up from school. Upon opening the heavy box, I gasped to discover how HUGE the book was. I hugged it. Hi Dita, welcome to my home. Come see my bedroom, let's be best friends. I left my children to their own devices (cartoons and cereal out of the box) whilst Dita and I shared a moment in my bedroom. While I wanted to skip ahead to chapters 7 (Kiss and Makeup) and 13 (Lipstick Traces), I was drawn in by the beautiful photos and bios of lovely people who have also found their own path to beauty. And so I have read it through, cover to cover. I'll probably read it again tomorrow. It was so much more than I had hoped. I'm getting to read about my beloved Dita and, as a bonus, getting to discover more about new lovely people. I have always been more in the world of black and white and have collected vintage hats since I discovered them at 12. While I lack the courage to peer at life through a spotted veil, I dream of hot rolled hair and sheer hosiery. With 5 small sons I can muster my MAC Diva Glam each day and some hair serum to slick back those flyaways. With Dita's encouragement to be free to be me I may yet embrace some falsies (eyelashes) and some opera gloves in the carpool line. Love you Dita!!! I'll see you again tomorrow!

I was blown away by this book. For $24 it was a bargain. It was huge, the pages were glossy, the pictures were gorgeous and she covered practically everything. There was even a chapter on eyebrows! I love Dita because she's a sexy glamour powerhouse that started as an ordinary mid-western girl with big dreams. I admire the fact that she's very much in control of her career and image. She even does her own hair and make up most of the time. Despite all this, she remains humble and down to earth. All of this shows in the pages of this book. I very much agree with her take on beauty being created. I'm a lingerie consultant like Dita used to be and I can't tell you how many women I've fitted in that dressing room that have apologized to me for some perceived body flaw of theres. Small chested women want to be bigger and bustier women want to be smaller.We are all different! Many of the insecurities women have are due to society pressuring them to look a certain way, not just for the eyes and pleasure of men but to compete with other women. It's a sad state of affairs. Whatever you want to change and however you want to look should first and foremost be for you. Dita talks about this in her chapter on cosmetic surgery which I find very empowering for women. We are constantly bombarded with images of female celebrities looking seemingly perfect and being glorified and worshiped like goddesses for doing so with headlines that have some of version of "You need to look like this and here's how". Dita makes it clear that you don't need to look like her. She tells you her secrets and routines but your hair is not hers, your skin is not hers, your body is not hers but you can certainly find what works for your hair, skin and body.

I'd known who Dita was before I bought this book, but hadn't really taken a serious interest in her or her burlesque work. I was looking for some inspiration for making myself over and never realized in a million years that this would be the thing. I feel like I don't even look at myself in the same way, and I love how much this book has helped me find my eccentric beauty and bring it out. I've never seen a professional burlesque show, but Ms. Von Teese certainly makes me want to! I'm her complete opposite: blond, socially conservative, and work in a career that requires suppression of sexuality and most femininity (out of consideration for my patients' feelings). This excellent and well-planned book has more useful information than I expected when I added it to my "style shelf". While her focus is vintage glamour (obviously), she also includes interviews with current "beauty-eccentrics", descriptions of her own image-crafting techniques, encouraging anecdotes, and fun historical facts about beauty. The book is quite heavy with beautiful photographs; you won't mind that most of them are of Ms. Von Teese because they are exceptionally beautiful. I'll never be able to indulge my Hollywood Glamour fantasies routinely, but this book shows a glittering world of femininity presented by a woman who is "feet on the ground"--even when they are perched in a giant martini glass.

This is an amazing book! You get a fabulous history of beauty, step by step instructions on makeup, recommendations on products she finds helpful, and even stretches! I forgot the exercise part in here. She hold nothing back, ladies, and does it with such style and grace. She even shows how to re-use antique compacts and lipstick tubes, which I am doing now. She also really inspired me to wear sunscreen every minute of every day. I enjoyed the interviews with her dermatologist and other people and performers she has friended along the way. The book itself is glamorous. It is oversized, has wonderful glossy pages, and beautiful photography. I know I am forgetting half of what I wanted to say about this book. She advocates glamour, every minute, every day, and shows how easy it really is to be glamorous in your own special way. Keep up the fabulous work, Dita! Order this book. You will not be disappointed.

This is an outstanding discussion of U.S. tax policy, and I unequivocally recommend it. Having said that, let me add some constructive comments:1. A fresh edition would be welcome.2. There is a strong presumption of the correctness of market solutions. While there is mention of externalities, a bit more elaboration on pigovian sumpturary taxes (e.g., carbon tax) would be helpful.3. There is a general predisposition to treat total gdp as the maximand--and then add that moral judgments must be made with respect to issues such as income distribution. Might it not be better to set an objective function more explicitly inclusive of moral judgment, such as a maximand of median personal income over an extended time.I have not read all other comments, and if these points have been made (or refuted) before, I apologize to the originator.

I used this book as a text for a masters-level tax policy class taught by the author, Joel Slemrod. Don't let this mislead you, the book is not written as a text, you will not find many graphs if any, and the language is clear and concise. The title tells you what it is: a citizen's guide.Maybe you don't think tax policy makes for beach reading, but this book is different. Additionally, Prof. Slemrod is fair and not ideological, so tax policy and suggested reforms are given their proper treatment in here. This book is NOT designed to be used in a screaming match with your relatives at Thanksgiving. You may also find yourself questioning your own opinions as you work through it, and reinforcing other opinions with strong facts and economic argument.

I can't imagine a more comprehensive, non-partisan look at our tax system. Excellent for anyone who wants to understand how our complex tax system works.

In an age where politicians spout off figures left and right that clearly contradict "the other side", being informed about the FACTS is essential. This book is exactly that. It is very fair, and unbiased -- it doesn't start from a political position and interpret the facts through that lense. Rather it attempts to take a thorough look at the tax system, and examine the economics of it before drawing any political conclusion. An impressive piece of work.

After reading this, I have quite an insight into how our tax policy is conducted and how it affects us tax payers. Believe it or not, I felt somewhat powerful when finishing reading this due to the fact that it tells you how the tax policy works and introduces different alternatives to our current tax policy. Knowledge truly is power.

I've always enjoyed public finance economics (we're undoubtedly a small group) and Professor Slemrod's (with John Bakija) 4th edition of "Taxing Ourselves" is a very comprehensive, fair-minded, and clear presentation of the issues involved with our current income tax system and proposals for new tax systems. Given that the authors are economists, the analysis focuses on issues of economic efficiency and prosperity, and not so much on political or legal issues, and is clearly-written and devoid of jargon and thus should be accessible to anyone interested in the most efficient and fairest manner our government should finance itself. The authors recognize that for many taxpayers, any "reformed" tax system is evaluated by how it will affect the taxes due for those taxpayers, but they assume their readers, being public policy-oriented, are more interested in how various tax systems would affect our nation, our economy, and our society. They also acknowledge that as economists, while they can help ascertain the costs, efficiency, impact on taxpayer behavior, and overall effects on economic prosperity and growth, the issue of fairness, e.g., proportional tax vs. progressive tax, capital income taxed at the same rate or a lower rate than income from labor, is an issue that economists have no special insight and that the issue of fairness is ultimately one of political, social, and economic values.The authors evaluate our current income tax system (both personal income tax and corporate income tax) and review its strengths and weaknesses. They later, in much detail, evaluate proposals for different tax systems including the more consumption-based national sales tax and value-added tax, as well as the "flat tax." There seems to be a trend, at least to me, that many economists favor a consumption tax like the value-added tax, while more political-minded policy analysts are less enamored of it, and prefer to modify the existing income tax system. Economists like the fact that consumption taxes (as a substitute for progressive income taxes) don't have the potentially disincentive effect of a progressive rate structure, don't discourage savings and investment, and in the words of one economist: "tax you based on what you take out of the economy [consumption] and not what you put in [income]." On the other hand, politically-minded observers view consumption taxes as "dead"; conservatives are wary of their revenue-generating ability and liberals are concerned about their actual and potential regressive effects. The authors spend a fair amount of time assessing the "flat tax", a proposal that seemed to have more traction 10 or 15 years ago but less today. Even with a single, proportional rate, they suggest that a modified progressive structure may be imparted by inserting a tax exemption for, say, the initial $50,000 in income. There is much concern, however, that a revenue-neutral flat tax would substantially lower taxes for many wealthy people while increasing them for the middle class.In effect, the authors don't provide their "optimal tax"; instead they provide a pro and con assessment of the various proposed tax systems, as well as modifications to the existing income tax system, to enable us as informed citizens to make reasoned judgments. Their hunch is that a complete overhaul of the current system is not likely, and that various modifications to the existing income tax system are more likely. In any event, economics suggests that a broader tax base, i.e., less deductions and exemptions, and lower marginal tax rates, work best for a prosperous economy. In overlaying the "fairness" issue, many would advocate a progressive tax rate structure on this system (similar to what we have today); others might suggest a proportional tax is more "fair." In my view, "vertical equity" and the fact that a taxpayer's current income is the best measure of his "ability to pay" argues strongly for retaining a progressive structure.

This book was required reading for a grad class on tax policy - but I was ecstatic to find that it is really accessible to lay people. You won't find tons of technical jargon, and what jargon there is will be explained thoroughly.I liked this book enough that I picked it up and read it again a year after my class ended.

This is a really well written summary of the US tax system. It's easy to read and highlights most of the main issues in tax policy right now. I bought this for a class but ended up reading it for fun anyway.

Well, this review is probably not fair because I never got to read it. My Amish neighbor kids snapped it up and poured over it like hot chocolate on ice cream. They absorbed all the info and commandeered their dad's workshop for the next few days to make bat houses. I got the first, beautifully perfect of cypress wood. I asked when I might get the book back and they said soon as all but 2 (out of the 7 readers in the family of 9 kids) had finished it. I think that means it's a 5 star book.

I bought this book because I was doing a multi-genre large project for my college english class and my subject was going to be about bat conservation. The book was very interesting for learning about bats but not necessarily for research purposes. What was not clear to me (perhaps it was my fault, was this was a collection of mostly stories about his past escapades. While it was fun and interesting to read, but I bought it more for real current statistics and information, not old stories. If you want to read a book about funny stories about studying bats, then this is great. Yes, it does go into a lot of scientic information about the studies, because it was not current information, I couldn't use much for my research. So if you want a research book this is probably not the best. I got an A+ on my assigment but it was due to information I gathered elsewhere. I do know a heck of a lot about bats now, though!

I can't get over how good this book was. When I purchased it, I didn't utilize Amazon's look inside feature so I assumed it was going to be a rather dry bat biology book. Boy, was I wrong. It's a fascinating account of a bat conservationists efforts to educate the world while saving as many bats as he can. A fun and entertaining read that I've already recommended to several people.

Great book on little-publicized subject. Many interesting anecdotes, as well as scientific information.Tuttle gives many aspects of bats' lives and their importance to our environment and even economy.We will never worry about living with bats again!

Wonderful book. The indefatigable Merlin Tuttle shares his wealth of knowledge accumulated during a lifetime of research on bats. His travels and adventures make for good reading for laymen and scientists alike. Easy to read and very interesting by the founder of Bat Conservation International, the one and only international bat organization that's worthy of our donations. (I'm not including Bat World Sanctuary because they have a different mission, they too are worthy of our donations!)

Readable, interesting, fascinating. The only fault I can find is that it often has a bit of a 19th century colonial patronistic know-it-all feel. Like "Relax. The expert has now arrived. Stand aside while I fix things. Just stand back and watch in amazement."and I'll make it all better now

I love Merlin's work as a photographer, and purchase his calendars ever year. And as he is the foremost expert on bats, I am excited to ready about his work in the field. So far I am really enjoying this book!
