I was a bit disappointed in this book. Almost all of the illustrations in the book are drawings that make it difficult to tell what the plants really look like, only the most general compositional effects (e.g., colorful blobs next to long green fronds). The photographs they've included are much more interesting than the drawings, but the plants aren't labeled. Also, they frequently reused the same plants in the different examples. Although this is ok to a degree, I was expecting to encounter a wider variety of plants and some more creative combinations.

A little dated but still lots of good information and ideas.

This book is excellent for getting the creative juices flowing! Each landscape indicates what plants are needed and also has variations depending on whether you are planting in a shady location or sunny location. It also includes what to expect from your landscape as the plants mature.This book answers many of the questions you have when planting, especially when starting with a blank canvas. Very - very informative!

I recently moved to Northern California and have been looking for a landscaping book that provides geographically suited plants, shrubs and perennials. This book provides ideas, alternatives for shady and sunny spots, planting graphs for annual growth and great arbor ideas. Well worth the price, packed full of ideas for the beginner and expert gardener. You won't be disappointed.

Very well resourced and beautifully illustrated, equally useful for those starting from scratch or planning a refurbishment. It covers ideas and problems you didn't realise you had or needed, and covers them well, with plenty of horticultural lore and advice. Not just for California, but here in Australia, and also Africa and Mediterranean countries. Just what we need in an increasingly thirsty world!

When I recieved this book I realized I already owned it. The book I owned was a few years older with a different cover and a slightly different name. There are some nice designs, but they should have more drought tolerant and native plant designs

I bought two books to learn about SoCal plants to help me pic a landscape design for the front of my house. The other book was not nearly as helpful. The diagrams in this book really help you to understand how plants should be paired. Even though the space I had to work with did not resemble any in the book, I did look for sunny spaces similar to mine and plants that were nice looking and easy to care for. I highly recommend the book !

For those of us lucky enough to garden in southern California, this is the perfect landscape design book if you have a blank slate.

I love this amazing teaching from Bob Thurman. Professor Thurman is a former monk, founder, of Tibet House, author, scholar and teacher. He holds the first endowed chair of Indo-European studies as Columbia University. However, if you are looking for a dry, erudite, removed scholarly treatise on the Tibetan Book of the Dead look elsewhere. Bob's lecturea are never dry, scholarly or remote. A critic from an older generation once called him the Red Skelton of Tibetan Buddhism, from my generation he's the Robin Williams. Some people are put off by his humor and his irreverance. I find his humor refreshing and bracing. Of course it helps if you dislike the administration of Darth Cheney and the Texas frat boy ex--president as much as Thurman does. As any good teacher, Thurman weaves current events (2005) into his lectures to help make them topical and interesting. He also speaks with great passion. Some find such an approach improper. If so don't buy these CDs. If you are unsure whether to spend the money I suggest listening to a free podcast first and then, if you like his style buy this lecture presentation.The material that Thurman presents is amazing stuff. I've read several books on the Bardo and I really struggle mightily with many of the concepts. This is by far the clearest, the most insightful presentation out there. The guided meditation leads you to the actual visualizations and mind-set needed to practice which he suggests practicing before falling to sleep. Thurman also presents how to practice lucid dreaming, a very useful tool that is covered elsewhere in great depth most effectively by Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche.. For a serious student of the Bardo of the Between I would couple these teachings with Sogyal Rinpoche's Tibetan Book of Lviing and Dying and Freemantle's book on the Tibetan Book of the Dead or Thurman's book on the subject.This product is sold as an audio book. It really isn't. I own Thurman's Tibetan Book of the Dead and this isn't it. This is a series of lectures, guided meditations and question and asnwers given to a small group at Menla. The material presented here is not found anywhere else and it is an invaluable resource for those who wish to truly delve into the depths of the precious Bardo - where full enlightenment awaits us if we are prepared. These teachings help tremendously in that goal.

Robert Thurman is the best! Unpretentious and accurate and illuminating. My only CD audiobook purchase ever.

I have bought this so many times I have lost count. Thruman makes this so interesting and a lot more accessible then you would think. Though I do think it helps to be a Mahayana Buddhist as it make much mores sense to me now then it did though I still enjoy it tremdously prior to my becaming a MB.

I haven't finished to cd yet but it has already cleared up the confusion I've had with this subject. Love Robert Thurman because his teachings are so clear because he speaks about the subject on every ones level.

Robert Thurman explains this material well and adds his own personal insights. There is a lot to digest in this series and having the CDs makes it easy to re-visit.

Great Read.

Thurman's voice gave me a headache. He screamed as if he was drunk. I disliked his sense of humour, his vocabulary and the content of his lecture. I did not learn much about the Tibetan Book of the Dead. Certainly not what I expected from an academician of his calibre.

I used to teach a quickhymns class I was trying to develop. This book is the same idea and all the work is done! So great to have 100 common hymns all in c! I've played for years and given lessons for years but if your time to learn is limited and you have a basic understanding of theory (beats, rests, and the treble staff) this is a great book. Both my teens had to learn to play a congregational (the congregation would sing with) for youth night (the teens take over the service), and they only had one month's notice. This book made that possible and they each learned a song from scratch on a month (one even learned an extra song on his own to play for the offertory). Well worth the money. I've recommended it to several people and am currently getting ready to teach a six week crash course for some ladies from a church without a pianist.

At first I ordered these too soon in my lessons, but it wasn’t long before I was able to play almost anything from these books.... I love them & it makes lessons so much more fun when you can play songs you love!
