I suppose it’d be fine for burning if you take the secondary comment (which is all this edition includes) literary. The Book of the Law is a slim volume to say the least and is public domain. Much better ways to get this info.

As a law professor teaching legal research and writing to first-year students, I have found that this book works wonders for my students drafting their first-ever office memos. The process can be daunting, but this book provides sound advice in clear language with an easy-to-follow format and a reassuring tone. It's truly a handy tool. I find myself returning to it, and loaning it out to students, again and again. The book's overview of The Bluebook's rules particularly helpful, too. It doesn't overwhelm students with too many details. Instead, it's a concise guide that tells them enough to orient them but not enough to intimidate them. Overall, I highly recommend this book to any law student, new lawyer, or teacher of legal writing. It's a staple that you'll be glad to have on your bookshelf and, if you're like me, it will quickly become dog-eared from frequent use.

I received a lot of criticism about my legal writing. Specifically, the attorneys at my firm thought I wrote long and convoluted sentences. My ideas and analysis got lost in the weeds. I found chapter 2, "How to write clear sentences," enormously helpful. The book made me aware of common mistakes I often make and gave me the tools to avoid them. My writing is far better as a result. I did not find the rest of the book as helpful, but I purchased it for a very specific reason.

This book is clearly written, and offers particularly useful and practical advice for anyone in interested in potentially becoming a lawyer

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I fail to see what the other reviewers found in this book. I feel that the author might have been aiming for something along the lines of the Elements of Style, but fell drastically short. You will find little help here if you have taken a research and writing class within the last three years. Pages five through 18 are spent explaining the difference between the executive and legislative branches. I am not sure who this book is aimed at, but it is far too basic for someone looking to add serious shine to their writing. There are too many other good books on the subject for me to recommend this title to anyone. Look elsewhere.

This book was okay and it was required for a class it may or may not help in the real world setting depends if the organizations has a set format they want to use.

It is without a doubt a far more relevant and purposeful guide to writing a memo than one of those stale books you likely bought in law school as part of your legal writing class. I am a practicing attorney and the majority of my high stress assignments are simply to write a memo on a particular issue, and this is the book I turn to with confidence. Sadly I did not use this book in law school, but I do wish I had. If you know someone who is in the legal profession or about to enter - do them a favor and buy them this short, concise guide to memo writing. I believe some of the top-tier schools have started to use this book and that makes sense to me. It is the new standard for legal writing guides as far as I am concerned.

This book is an exceptional, no-nonsense guide to writing a legal memorandum that should be required reading for law students. As an attorney in a large DC law firm, I see a lot of written work from summer associates from Harvard, Yale, Stanford, and Chicago. Every single one of those summer associates would have benefited from reading this book and taking to heart the author's tips about organization and style. I recommend it without reservation.

I remember receiving a copy of this book for my eighth birthday, and having just started my lifelong obsession with ships and the sea, I totally ate it up. Viewed through rose-tinted glasses, this is an exceptionally cool book. It's easy to see why it appealed to me then, and also why it hasn't held up terribly well. On the plus side, this book is extremely good looking. It makes excellent use of beautifully detailed vintage ship models, maritime artifacts, and actual nautical equipment ranging from a sailmaker's fid to a modern diving helmet. Everything is very sharp, colorful, and properly laid out. The page layouts are quite busy, but easy to follow.I don't envy the editors at DK who had to somehow compress the entire history of human seafaring into 27 two-page spreads. This leads to the book's biggest flaw - 64 pages simply isn't enough to cover a subject this big. DK's visual dictionaries devoted to cars and flight were definitely more well-rounded affairs, although to be fair, they only had to cover the last century. Entire spreads are devoted to plywood dinghies and the contents of a modern four-person life raft, but there's little or nothing on non-European ships, ocean liners, modern cargo ships, lifesaving appliances, and so on. Individual spreads don't really gel and suffer from a lack of historical delineation; the one on sails, for examples, features the head of a modern Marconi sail, close-ups of synthetic sailcloths, and a model of a 19th-century topsail schooner. The display screen of a sonar fish finder is shown beside an early 20th century steam trawler, an 18th century capstan shares space with a modern pair of bollards, and so on.I know this is a children's book, but I'm not entirely sure how much they'd actually appreciate it, as there's little in the way explanations of how anything actually works. I can't remember how I reacted to it back in 1993, but I probably didn't walk away knowing what a "clump cathead," "slip eccentric," "spirketting," or "swifting tackle" were without consulting some "grownup books" later in life. "Ships and Sailing" is fun on a visual level, and worth the going price if you're a nautical buff, but I'd recommend Tre Tryckare's The Lore of Ships if you're looking for a serious "visual dictionary" on the subject.

Because of my recent viewings of Starz network's "Black Sails" and the Depp "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies, I've rekindled a deep fascination for old sailing ships. I can't remove one star from this review because some of the items weren't described in greater detail. I didn't expect that. For me, it's a beautiful visual supplement to the more academic books available, none of which, so far, have the color and detail this does. Rich photo close-ups of the items are quite nice. It is exactly what I'd hoped for. Photos of models give a truer sense of what the inside and out qualities of these old ships were like.So for whatever focus your study of ships may be, this is an excellent supplement to books with more detailed definitions and descriptions of the use of gear on a ship.

I bought this learn a lot of the nautical jargon that I had no use for when I was in the navy, as I served on a sub. But now that I hang out with a singing group that does the old tyme sea shanties, it is nice to learn what the words mean. Good pictures, easy to look through.

Nice book on different kinds of boats... lots of photos and interesting facts. Essentially for kids or adults who want something basic to look at. At the price Amazon lists for this book, it's well worth it. DK books are very comprehensive, their bindings are fantastic, and I find them to be of good value.

Visually a very good book. But, it requires that you have a separate nautical terminology reference to hand in order to understand what is being shown to you in greater detail. "Stephen Biesty's Cross-Sections: Man-Of-War" turned out to be just what the doctor ordered in that regard!

This is not diluted historic truth. This pictoral rendition has been combined with the highest degree of research and current scholarship in their most absorbable forms.

I thought in one of the previous reviews that a CD and access code would be supplied if a new copy would be bought. But, I didn't get either with my order. Was I mistaken?

Well, as much as I enjoyed the pictures, and the nice layout of each page, it still wasn't quite what I was looking for. I saw the summary stated "looks at the innner workings...rigging, navigation instruments,.."etc and I thought it was going to give some detailed definition of each part of a ship. But instead I see a term, let's say 'hatch coaming/shot garland' that has a line pointing to a general direction in the ship, with no further explanation. What is does say on the side is telling about the type of ship you're looking at, no more information about the parts of a ship, and what they are used for. Like when you first open the book, there is a picture of a 'stropped block'. ...So what is a stropped block? What's it used for? Well I dunno. So that was my problem with the book. I did really like the flags and the different meanings of them though.

Muniya S. Khanna, PhD, is a clinical psychologist at the Children’s and Adult Center for OCD and Anxiety, director of The OCD and Anxiety Institute, and research investigator at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Prior to this, she served on the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. She is an expert in the cognitive-behavioral treatment of childhood anxiety and obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders, having been involved in some of the most important research in the field in the last twenty years. Khanna is author of numerous scientific papers, chapters, and treatment manuals, and a recognized cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) trainer and speaker. She is a pioneer in digital mental health research for child anxiety. In partnership with her mentor, Philip Kendall, she developed digital interventions for child anxiety, including Camp Cope-A-Lot, Child Anxiety Tales; and hostswww.copingcatparents.com, a website to inform and empower parents of children with anxiety.Deborah Roth Ledley, PhD, is a licensed clinical psychologist at the Children’s and Adult Center for OCD and Anxiety. I have an 11 year old who has always worried, but his anxiety has grown worse recently. We have only read the introduction and started on the first activity but he really enjoyed the information he received thus far. It seems right at his level, and it seemed to really make sense to him. I have looked through the exercises and I really like what I see. This is going to give me a great tool to try and help him gain some helpful coping mechanisms.

I read Ms. Khanna's book with 20-20 hindsight. I wish I had this book 5 years ago when my happy and confident daughter became overwhelmed by chronic worrying about her social status. We used exercises like this to develop the skills needed to overcome anxiety, but it took years to find them. The Worry Workbook offers them in one collection. This is a toolkit for solving the worry-problem.
