About the Author

A native of Montreal, Canada, David Jedeikin came to America in search of fame and fortune, but found greater fulfillment as a software engineer. A nomad even before his world journey, Jedeikin has lived in Toronto, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Lansing, Michigan, Chicago, and Boston. During this time he managed to organize a world-record-breaking charity telethon, co-edit a start-up Internet magazine, and serve as assistant editor on a French-Canadian-Mexican made-for-TV production of Tarzan. For the moment, Jedeikin has laid down roots in San Francisco, where he works as a software engineer, but the lure of further travel is never far from his mind.

What a great read!I love stories that fuse world travel with an inner-journey of self-discovery. My sole critique is that the author only spent 17 pages on Steve—far too little real estate for this complex, compelling character.On page 290, the author asks, “Will Steve’s unpredictable nature spark a reprise of hostility?” Alas, we never find out what happens to Steve, this mysterious (and likely misunderstood) specimen of creative genius. Will he lose his mind? Will his life spiral out of control due to his unpredictable nature? Or will he buy the book, read through page 6 (where he discovers his pseudonym for the first time), and download the Kindle version so he can jump to every instance of the word “Steve” throughout the entire book. The author mentions “Steve” a total 30 times, by the way... again, far too little for my taste.Alas, we’ll never know what happens to Steve... unless the author gifts us a follow-up memoir. Ooooh, what I wouldn’t give to read a book that focuses exclusively on the trials and tribulations of the illustrious Steve!

David Jedeikin saved a life. His partner of three years was in need of a liver transplant, so David agreed to be his living donor. Shortly afterward, they broke up. In need of a "life experience" himself, David decides to take seven months off to travel the world. Traveling as a flashpacker, David sets out on a trip across six continents.We learn the origins of David and Bradley's relationship in the first eight page chapter actually entitled "Origins." The two are eleven years apart in age, and "in some respects come from different galaxies." Unfortunately, I didn't really have any sympathy for Bradley. He seems pompous and immature, and not very gracious toward David's decision to be his donor. Therefore, you almost feel sorry for David, especially after this quote near the end of Chapter 1:"In every one of the places I've called home since striking out from my birthplace it's been the same cycle, again and again: anticipation, hope, optimism, a new circle of friends, a new job, sometimes a new mate. And then...disappointment. Discord. Heartbreak. And the cycle begins anew."Wow! I'd want to escape and see the world too. Being a gay man myself, I could totally sympathize with David. I've had guys break my heart after I gave them a ring or even my heart 100%. But my liver? I can't imagine the heartbreak and turmoil David must have gone through. From California, to Denver, to his homeland of Montreal, to London, David is out of the country by page 16! Both the reader and David have put this behind them, and we're off to conquer the world.On the cover of the book is the following description: A true story of a living liver donation, an epic journey around the world, and a gay man's search for himself. Unfortunately, that middle part rings more true than the rest. Though David briefly revisits his situation with Bradley, it is not a mainstay of the book. In fact, when the author brings it up, the subject is usually dismissed after only a sentence or two, no more than a paragraph. Instead, the book becomes more of a travel log.In fact, his travel writing is so good David should write for Damron! He takes his readers on the journey with him in and out of hostels and bed and breakfasts, eating up local cuisine, and catching both the touristy and non-tourist attractions across the globe from London, Paris, Amsterdam, Egypt, Copenhagen, Germany, Israel, Tokyo and more!As for the latter part of that description, we're not really treated to much self discovery. Again, when David begins to tap into how he's feeling about his previous situation, he wraps it up in just a sentence or two and quickly moves on to his next passport destination. It doesn't seem like we are learning much about David, and neither is he. Instead, we are treated to history lessons of the places he's visiting. In fact, I was a little saddened by his constant recreational use of drugs, waistline obsession, and need to get laid. I was reminded of a gay jetsetter whose physical appearance and libido are top priorities.What did he learn from the journey? Well, it's wrapped up in the very last paragraph of the book. But by then, I had stopped reading this book as an emotional journey of a living liver donor and traded it for just a good travel journal. Jedeikin can definitely paint a picture of a place with words that makes you want to see it for yourself. As for the rest? I guess I was just expecting a bit more depth and emotion. I wanted to go to those places too.

Non fiction. Very well written story about a man's journey - real and metaphorical. The descriptions of the places he visited were really great, I wish I could travel like him:)I have to admit that it took me some time to fully immerse myself into David Jedeikin's huge book. For one thing, the narrative changed from the story of an apparently happy gay couple to one of tragedy when one half of the couple needs a liver transplant to a story that appeared to be about a now-single gay man literally traveling through the entire planet. But even then, the story split into two levels: one was the travelogue (which encompassed the main narrative) and one that was not as specific but still quite important: David's quest to figure out his place in the world. While I wouldn't say that I was intimidated by the size of the book--after all, David's story *needed* this much space to develop--it was, at times, an exhausting read. For David travels from one place to the next so fast that it almost felt like he was (literally) running away from everyone including himself. As a travelogue, it worked. As a gay book, um, I'm not feeling so sure. Despite all of David's hookups or romances in different countries (some more poignant than others), I got the feeling that he placed himself more as Jew than as a gay man. There were certain ""discovery"" moments when he reconnected with his faith (ironic since he's not particularly religious) that were understandable, but (to me) somewhat distracting. If anything, reading this book has really made me think about doing some serious travel in the near future. :) "

I found 'Wander the Rainbow' to be engaging, moving, and an over-all good read! I was especially taken with the spiritual journey and the morphing of a 'running away from it all and partying hard' trip into a deep, thoughtful, and introspective voyage of self-discovery. A very human voyage, albeit from a gay perspective. The writer's thoughts and feelings ring true; the descriptions of people and places are interesting, humorous, and informative; the language is expressive and erudite without being pompous; and the courage it took to put it all out there is truly commendable.

On Mount Everest there have been many cases of people who had to be left for dead because they could not assist in their own rescue. In 1996 when Rob Hall remained behind and refused to abandon a client, both ended up dying. That is the reality of the risk.Of course there have been those who were left for dead and ended up surviving against all odds. There was Beck Weathers during the infamous 1996 season. In this book is the story of Lincoln Hall. Left for dead, he was discovered alive the next day and successfully rescued.Then there is this controversial case. David Sharp, a young British climber was found alive near the summit of Everest. Beside him was the body of a man called “Green Shoes” by climbers. The man had died long ago; his body unrecoverable. It is now used as a marker, to let people know where they are on the mountain.When David Sharp was found, forty people simply climbed past him, paying scant attention. They left him oxygen and gave some minor assistance, but they all elected to continue the climb. Could Sharp have been saved if some of them had abandoned their climb and helped him down to the next safe camp? Would it have made a difference if he had been a member of one of the expeditions, instead of choosing to basically climb without support?The question will never be answered. It is certain that above 8,000 meters, a climber knows that he or she needs to know when to turn around. As one climber has said, “Getting to the top is optional, getting down is necessary.” Do people become desensitized to the plight of their fellow humans on such climbs? Or is it simply that the knowledge that each person knows the risks and must be willing to accept that they are in the end responsible for themselves? This is an excellent work, that tells a great deal about David Sharp being found in "Green Boots" cave, alive, near the top of Mt. Everest. The writing is on, or above par with "Into Thin Air". A more complete light is shown on the tasks of the leaders of the climbing teams. Also how information flows from the climbers, to the expedition leaders, and to the outside world.If nothing else, the picture of how dangerous rescue attempts can be at such high altitudes. Lives of three Sherpas have been lost it an attempt to retrieve a body for return to base camp. Unless you are able to walk, and follow commands, rescue so high up on Mt Everest is virtually impossible.This book is an excellent read. It is packed with information on expeditions to the top of Mt. Everest. If you are interested in Mt. Everest climbs, this work is packed with information. More important is the coverage of what happened to David Sharp.

I’m not a climber nor a wannabe, but I am enthralled by books about climbing the world’s highest mountains. In Dark Summit, Nick Heil very ably tells the tragic story of the 2006 climbing season on Mt. Everest. Hell thoroughly researched this book through extensive interviews & reading & leads the reader through the extreme difficulties encountered by high altitude climbers. I highly recommend Heil’s book as well as many others he references in his research.

I am not a climber but have always found Himalayan adventures fascinating. From Into Thin Air, The Climb and Beyond the Limit( TV). All of these are necessary to start to understand the events from 1996 to 2006. This book is tougher to follow due to the various teams and expeditions it tries to cover. If you have read and watched the above mentioned resources it will provide added insight into some of the main players on the mountain.

The truth is that once you read a few accounts (I have read Into Thin Air, The Climb,and also am just about finished with this book Dark Summit), you can certainly read between the lines and pick up the backstory- of "what people were like" and such, and perhaps even why, whether you can respect that or not. I don't reallythink we need more salacious details as the contexts speak for themselves.I was struck and struggled to integrate the fact that climbing this mountain, with such an ethereal and potentially pristine essence offered by nature (and all the focus and stress on the summit, as if just climbing and getting experience in the environment isn't quite enough) is juxtaposed now with modern greed, ambition, ego, and hubris. It is clear to me that "accomplishing this feat" takes a very specific mix of measured readiness which perhaps only the Sherpas innately have due to their upbringing (and genetics) in the high altitude areas, in addition to their spiritual respect for the forces of nature and the mountains. Interesting read of the journey of Gutenberg Bible. This book is written in the present tense, which I find difficult to read and believe is not the best approach for a historical book. More pics of the actual BIble would have been nice.

I wanted to love this book - but sadly, I didn't. In fact, I gave up a page 145. It tells about a specific copy of the first bibles printed by Gutenberg using moveable type - Bible #45. The focus in on the owners of the bible in the 1800s and 1900 hundreds, with stories about how this copy of the bible was acquired, and the various dealers involved in buying and selling this book. It also tells the relationship of the bible's owners to the book - some were fascinated, and one just saw is a trophy to have in his collection.I didn't find the stories of the owners that interesting. I did enjoy learning a bit more about how the first bibles were produced, decorated, and bound and would have loved to have a much deeper level of detail about the manufacture of the books, how many are currently in existence, and how they vary. Some of these elements are touched upon along the way, but I would have liked to know much more.My interest just fizzled out - I didn't find the owners's stories that interesting, and was deeply curious about the missing 300+ years of the book's history.

Not only does this rather well done book give the fascinating history of one Gutenberg Bible, it also allows us a view of early printing and gives us a view into the lives of some of those who owned the books. This is a book about books and will delight those who are interested in books.Now I love book and have been collecting them....well no, not collecting them, but rather ‘hording” them for over 70 years now, and I enjoyed the motivation that other people have in collecting them. As with anything rare and extremely expensive many of the collectors were more interested in the “having” rather that the cherishing with I found to be sad.The author was just a bit light as to the specifics as to how these books were printing but doing a simply google search and a visit to the local library will bring a person up to day on this aspect quite well.The scholarship was excellent and there were plenty of source document included...something I appreciate and the book, while giving good technical data was quite readable and read more like a story rather than a tech manual.All in all I was delighted with this book and will no doubt give it another read on down the lime.

This book was a disappointment to me. Lost Gutenberg will probably be enjoyed by many readers, but the subtitle “The Astounding Story of One Book’s Five-Hundred-Year Odyssey” led me to expect just that. I was intrigued by how the author would have traced the ownership of the book, known as Book 45, back so far and eager to hear how the Gutenberg books were treated in the early years. Alas, the book did not deliver what the subtitle promises. Except for a short four-page discussion of Gutenberg and his time in the first chapter, Lost Gutenberg does not take up the history of the Gutenberg bible until it is purchased by Archibald Acheson, 3rd Earl of Gosford, in 1836. Book 45 then goes through five private owners and the Catholic Church before it is purchased by a Japanese publishing conglomerate in 1987.In 1950 the only known woman collector to own a Gutenberg, Estelle Betzold Doheny, bought Book 45. Doheny is portrayed as someone with a sincere appreciation for the book as a piece of history and a reflection of her faith as a devout Catholic. She also no doubt had a “shrewd mind for the bottom line” and considered herself to have gotten a real bargain thanks to a strong US dollar and a devaluation of the British pound. The attitudes of other owners were rather different. As author Davis says, “In some hands, books are little more than inert props”, and, indeed, Gosford even writes his name in the book and underlines it with a flourish! To such men, their book collections were simply an ostentatious display of a wealth that some of the debt-ridden owners did not really have. There are many descriptions of grand estates and feasts like a coming-of-age party where over 550 guests were served 700 pounds of plum pudding.The last third of the book is rather different, as the world-changing technology of Gutenberg meets today’s technology. In the chapter The Nuclear Bibliophiles, we hear how physicists use a proton beam from a cyclotron to get insights into Gutenberg’s printing process and to learn the secret to his non-fading ink. Estelle Doheny was not the only Book 45 owner to take advantage of international economic ups and downs. The big Japanese economic bubble of the late 20th century enabled the Japanese company Maruzen to become the first known Asian owner of a Gutenberg bible. I loved the company’s response when an American reporter asked them why they wanted a Gutenberg bible: “If it were not for Gutenberg, there would be no Maruzen.” The book now rests at Japan’s Kelo University, where modern technology is again used with great care to preserve it for future generations to revere and to bring it to a wider audience for the first time by creating a “virtual Gutenberg” online.Lost Gutenberg has a lot of interesting stories and information that will probably be enjoyed most by history buffs, who will delight in the recent histories of the owners like the heir to the Lee and Perrins Worcestershire sauce fortune or the scandal involving Estelle Doheny’s oil tycoon husband. Ello! EnderDude is back! school and life kept me from reading for a while, but yeah. I kinda liked it. it was a bit short, and a little cheezier than usual, but then again, that's why i read these. anyways, there were a lot less errors (finally! thank you for actually checking the grammar) this is actually the first time i have been inspired to play a simulator of that type. (im like joe/tofuu/forstaken. eggs make me salty. especially when i get cheezed.) Robloxia kid, PLZ DO SWORDBURST 2 it would be awesome i would buy the book i wouldnt even rent it with ku. Great book but it was short. There were about 4-6 sentence (not spelling) errors. I suggest you use Grammarly to write your books. I was disappointed that it had a short ending, the conclusion was nice. Great book but try to make them a bit longer.
