The kids are your typical brother versus sister duo, but what happens next is anything but typical. I won't spoil the surprise - although you can guess from the book's title - but I will say that you're in for a fast-paced ride through the universe, where you will encounter one of the most endearing characters I've ever run into: Stinky Frank. He's brave, resourceful, loyal, and well, stinky.Mr. Ramirez weaves numerous fun scientific facts throughout the book, and includes a few important life lessons as well, namely no matter how "awful" you think your sibling is, they're usually your best ally in life, and most importantly: sometimes parents leave, but it's never the fault of the child.Younger and/or reluctant readers will find this an exciting read, and older ones will zip through it in one sitting.I cannot WAIT for the next installment of The Jupiter Chronicles - and I'm a grandmother!

Good short chapter book for kids. I think it could have been a little longer but I and my kids liked it.

This book contains many elements to delight young readers. It has adventure, it involves children in a unique way in the story line, and the book has a purpose toit--the children are trying to get to their father. Not enough fathers are featerued in stories so it is refreshing to have a positive father in this one! You've got to keep reading because you can't wait to find out what happens next--I would recommend it!

Ridiculous story. Nothing remotely plausible or redeeming about it. Somebody's effort to write a fantasy about his parents' divorce. Total waste of time.

So she sneaks a peek into it - and is surprised when the instrument transforms into a sort of space ship.The kids are even more shocked when the machine whisks them to Jupiter.Ian and Callie are quickly apprehended by the Martian Emperor Phobos and his Doomslayer forces, who had taken over the planet in their father's absence. It turns out that their father is part of the ruling family on Jupiter - and he was kidnapped from earth and held prisoner.It's up to Ian and Callie to rescue their father and set the Jovians (the inhabitants of Jupiter) free from the evil Emperor Phobos' rule.Is this a good book for your child to read? Let's take a closer look...The Good Stuff:Family values stand front and center in "The Jupiter Chronicles." The hurt and hardships of dealing with the absence of a husband and father are not sugar-coated. It's obvious that both Ian and his mom, Camilla, are struggling to cope.As for Ian and Callie, they are typical siblings. They pick on each other and fuss at each other, but they have each other's backs. And Ian takes care to watch out for his young sister on their adventures.Plus, Ian, Callie, their father Peter, and their new-found robot friend, Stinky Frank all exhibit the good character qualities of bravery, determination and loyalty.Violence:As a fantasy-adventure story, "The Jupiter Chronicles" does contain some action violence, but it's appropriate for the intended reading audience. For example:- Ian and Callie are taken prisoner on Jupiter by a squad of enormous Doomslayer robots and thrown in prison.- When the kids are forced to basically fight for their lives in the Drifterdash games, Ian rigs a couple of weapons that they use to literally annihilate their Doomslayer opponents.- On two separate occasions, Ian shoots Doomslayers out of the sky when they attack their space ship. Ian also puts on his Fireflight - a contraption that allows him to fly - and blasts away at Doomslayers outside of the ship.Magic, Sorcery and Spirituality:Although "The Jupitor Chronicles" is a fantasy story, there is no magic or sorcery to be found. As for spirituality, Ian and Callie's mom, Camilla, prays every night for the safe return of her children.Sexual Content:NoneDrugs and Alcohol:NoneFoul Language:NoneMy Two Cents:"The Jupiter Chronicles Book One: The Secret of the Great Red Spot" is exactly what the author intended it to be......A simple flight of fancy that any parent would feel comfortable allowing their child to read.Its strong family message and emphasis on good values is refreshing. And its Star Wars-like adventure would be an enjoyable read for kids.As a critical adult, I only had a couple of small problems with the book. One is that it's difficult to determine when the story is taking place. The main clue is that they use candles for light. The promotional materials say the story takes place in 1892, but that is not made clear in the book.Also, it's unclear as to how Ian is able to create weapons on a technically-advanced planet. Yes, he likes to take apart his toys and rebuild them. But that's a far cry from rigging space guns. And speaking of guns, how did these kids manage to be such crack shots? If they lived in 1892, they certainly didn't learn their technique on video games.But aside from these minor issues, I highly recommend this chapter book for six to eight-year-old readers.

Yes, it's an unusual premise: seeing the story through the viewpoint of a dead girl 's consciousness trapped in her memorial bench. This is an ambitious effort, taking on not only the peculiar point of view but also issues of class distinction and racial prejudice, teen independence vs. proper parental involvement, even peeking briefly into questions of sexual identity. It's ambitious for certain, but I am not so sure how well it works. A day after finishing it, I am left with a vague sense of incompleteness. The satisfying resolution isn't there for me.

My Life as A Bench is a treasure of a book. You will fall in love with Ren, a seventeen year old girl, who has died unexpectedly, and her spirit is residing in her memorial bench in a park by the River Thames. There is no artifice to Ren. She is a straightforward, daring, sweet teenager who put her heart into life, and is trying to come to terms with her death. It is so sweet, and ever so touching. It will stay with me.

“Ren,” runs away to meet her dad, whom she’s never met, and ends up living with him, his wife, and their daughter, for a few months. Just before she turns 18, Ren dies and inhabits the bench, erected in her memory. We journey with her as she goes through the arduous process of remembering how she died. “Lionel,” the bench/ spirit next to her helps her in her process to become. Funny, serious, and real! This is a very powerful YA novel.

Friendships take time to deepen and gain understanding of a person's worth. First impressions are not always as they would seem and in this case the consequences proved fatal.

This was a well written book that really preyed on my mind. It did seem to drag in parts, but mostly because I wanted to find out the ending. It could be a bit depressing for sensitive readers.

Very well told story. Didn't like the ending. It had a lot of British teenage slang. Overall interesting read and it kept this old lady entertained.

I thought the title was a metaphor but I was wrong. Well written and fascinating characters. An excellent sense of place.

An interesting and well-written book. The writing style really puts you in the mindset of the main character, reliving the last months of her life every night until she can recall how she died. YA, romance, murder...this book has it all.

I am so thankful for this book! We just got our first dog last month and I got this book to cram a ton of know-how in my head before our puppy gets too many bad habits. I love how the chapters are mapped out and how I can quickly find strategies for whatever situation I’m dealing with or fun new things to teach our puppy that I would have never thought of! We have had fun watching our puppy discover an ice cube, play soda bottle soccer, and learn simple commands. Anything I want to know has step by step directions in numbered format so I can learn easily. Of course, this book covers all the important things like choosing a dog, potty training, feeding, health and hygiene. If you have a new puppy, this book is a great tool!

I just got a puppy when I bought this book so needless to say I read quickly. A lot of great information. Only 11 weeks old and she's got "sit" and "drop it" down and she's about 80% potty trained!

I bought this to prepare for my new puppy since it had been a number of years since I had a dog. The book was very informative, a quick read and had a lot of good suggestions. She walks through a lot of different options for things like collars, leashes, housetraining methods, even if she doesn't necessarily agree with those methods she still lays out all the options. She walks through how to teach tricks and commands clearly. I feel so much more prepared to bring my new puppy home after reading this. Again it was a very quick read and will be easy to go back and reference if I need to.

This is my go-to book for raising puppies, which is why I bought it for my son when he got his first dog. I read it cover to cover before we got our now 11 year old dog and it provided fantastic lessons for training him. He is one of the best behaved dogs I've ever owned. I think anyone who has a puppy or is thinking of getting one should read this!

We have a new lab puppy and he is a challenge!!! The book has been a lifesaver in helping us to know how to handle behavioral problems in a positive way, and I am sure that as Gabe grows (and he IS groooooowing at 75 pounds at nearly nine months!) our friends and neighbors appreciate that we are training him to be a good citizen...It is a great book that has been a great help in raising a great boy!

This is a great book for those of us who have never had a puppy. I would recommend buying it way in advance of bringing your puppy home. There is so much information in this book it can be a bit overwhelming. There are good resources and practical suggestions that really make a difference, and help you understand things from the puppy's perspective.

Great guide for those who get a puppy. Should be read before deciding, since it has a lot of valuable information on choosing the right dog. Taught me a lot of things I don't know but should when caring for a new puppy.

After consulting five professional trainers, a friend told us about this book and we've been on a good road ever since. We have a Golden Doodle that has much more energy than we do and is so smart that it's scary! The information in this book kept our heads above the situation and we now have a maturing and reasonably well behaved Doodle. He's getting there at just 10 months old and it's because of this book. We consult it frequently. We could have saved a lot of time, money and frustration if we had known about this book earlier. We VERY highly recommend it to anyone who has or is planning on getting a puppy. This is also very down to earth and common sensible information. I have recommended this book to everyone who will listen. If I had the money, I would have given this book as a Christmas gift to everyone I've ever known. It's incredible to me that a book this deep, and yet TOTALLY accessible was written by a well-known church speaker and not one of the apostles. So far beyond the price of the book, gives so much hope and perspective regarding our rocky journey here. RUN, don't walk and get this book!!!!!!!!!!

Brad Wilcox is one of my favorite authors. I saw him speak at a time out for women and went running up to him because I had to have him sign one of the other books he has written, "The Continuous Atonement". He writes books that are intelligent, but easy to read. He gives great insights that make his subject matter easier to understand without dumbing it down. He issues lots of personal experiences and personal stories, too, which I love. I would highly recommend him. I encourage people all the time to read his books, but rarely do I lend them out because I always want to keep a copy at home for my own reference. Love his writing.

For the serious LDS reader who wants to contemplate the conversion process as it relates to the atonement and the Plan of Salvation. I read a chapter a night, and I found myself pondering things that I'm not sure I ever thought of before. I would suggest it be read after Wilcox's book The Continuous Atonement.

Scriptures are one thing. Learning how scriptures apply to us personally is another, especially when we tend to be our own worst critics. This book expounds on the role of the atonement in our life and helps us see that life is not just a bunch of boxes being checked off and if we have more good than bad, then "we're in". Rather, it takes the viewpoint that life is a school and the atonement is what allows us to progress. Its not about who we were yesterday nor necessarily about who we are today, it is about who we will become...and the choice is ours whether we want to become all we can.

This book is filled with quotables and concepts that help us understand the Atonement and the role of conversion in our lives. Loved it!

This particular purchase was a gift, but this book is truly amazing. It is taking me so long to read because it make you think, I'm marking, highlighting and taking notes. Brad Wilcox is really inspirational, and anyone looking at strengthening their testimony needs to read this book.
