The Lunar Chronicles are a series with lots of complexity and history -- whether the characters are from Earth or Luna, they have a lot going on in their lives. So it only seems natural that Marissa Meyer expanded her science-fiction fairy-tale series with "Stars Above," a collection of her short stories that fill in all the gaps of the characters' pasts -- and though readers of her series will know where each story goes, every one is a gripping little tale that fleshes out the wider story.Each of the stories focuses on a character -- some major, some supporting -- in the Lunar Chronicles universe, but several years before the events of the main series. They're in roughly chronological order, beginning with "The Keeper," and Michelle's struggle to care for and hide the Lunar princess in the basement of her farmhouse. Then there is "Glitches," where a small cyborg child is brought to live with her new stepfamily, only to be stranded with a cruel, bitter stepmother and bratty stepsister.And then there are stories for other characters -- Z, a boy torn from his family and forever altered into an elite, wolfish soldier for the Lunar Queen; Carswell, a wealthy young boy whose schemes and con games are interrupted by compassion; Cress, a young "shell" whose ingenuity causes her to be exiled into space; Winter's regret over the use of her gift prompts her to vow not to use it again, with terrible results; and Kai brings his beloved android to a simple mechanic's shop, with life-changing results.There is also "The Little Android," a bittersweet tale based on "The Little Mermaid," where a robot falls in love with a human. And there is a new novella called "Something Old, Something New," a tale taking place after the end of the series. Cinder and her friends reunite on Scarlet's farm for a very romantic occasion, and the cyborg has the chance to finally come full circle to where her journey began.It goes without saying that "Stars Above" is a collection that should only be read after one has finished the rest of the Lunar Chronicles, because it effectively gives away half the twists that take place in the series -- including the ending. While the novels are a complete story unto themselves, these short stories allow Meyer to fill in the cracks between her stories, exploring the characters at pivotal, life-changing points in their lives. For some, it's simply finding a new place in life. For others, it's being physically transformed into something new -- a cyborg or a wolf-man.One or two of the stories are a bit lightweight ("The Mechanic" is simply Kai and Cinder's first meeting from HIS point of view), but most of them have a wrenching quality at their heart. Most of these tales -- except for Carswell's, and the series' coda -- are stories of loss, pain, death, alienation and the cruelty of Queen Levana, in one way or another -- and Meyer's sleek, detailed writing creates some scenes of true horror (Winter being forced to carve up her own face) or spellbinding beauty ("But she was already vast and bright and endless").And it does help flesh out the characters even more, especially when they focus on a character who is either very internalized (Ze'ev) or doesn't appear much in the flesh (Michelle, Scar's grandmother). Cinder in particular is explored as a clumsy, amnesiac child who is offered little but scorn, slowly growing from her initial depressed blankness into a clever child who finds a niche where she belongs -- and her brief appearances throughout the stories allow us to see her grow in strength and confidence.This collection also has a few sample chapters from Meyer's forthcoming book "Heartless," which is based on Lewis Carroll's Wonderland books. It follows Catherine, the daughter of a bombastic Marchioness, who bakes a set of lemon tarts shortly before a royal ball.Best read after the rest of the series, "Stars Above: A Lunar Chronicles Collection" expands the characters' backstories, adding new richness and depth -- and providing a solid, satisfying coda to the series. Clever, bittersweet and beautifully written.

The Lunar Chronicles is a fantastic series with an amazing storyline, characters, and writing, but you have to admit that there was a lot going on in all of the books. Not to mention the multiple unanswered questions piling up. So to officially wrap up the series once and for all, Marissa Meyer released an engaging, captivating, heartbreaking collection of short stories that tied up any and all loose ends. Thank god, because after Winter ended, I still needed more of these beloved characters! There are a total of nine stories included in this collection, one of them a completely separate story set in the same world, and one of them an epilogue describing the aftermath of the entire series. I'm going to review each of these stories separately, going in the order they were written.The Keeper: 3.5 stars. An interesting look into how Michelle Benoit cared for Cinder before she became a cyborg, and how Cinder's and Scarlet's stories are intertwined. This one was okay, considering it was about a minor character who was less involved throughout the series, and it was fun to read and pick up on Scarlet's little cameos. However, I kind of wish we got to learn more about Logan Tanner and how he came in contact with Princess Selene. But overall, it was a great story.Glitches: 4.5 stars. This one picks up immediately after The Keeper, and tells us how Cinder made her way to New Beijing, met Adri, Pearl, and Peony, and rebuilt Iko, simultaneously finding a knack in her crazy new world. It also tells us what happened to the mysterious Linh Garan, the inventor of the bioelectricity device, and Cinder's stepfather. It was really interesting to find out how Cinder ended up in New Beijing, and her reactions to meeting her new family for the first time. It was definitely strange reading about a Cinder who didn't exactly stand up for herself, and was weak, scared, and lonely. I was glad when Cinder first realized her talent for fixing objects, and to see a sign of the familiar Cinder. Peony was super kind from the beginning, and that makes her storyline even more sad. This was a really good story, with great, descriptive writing, and an intriguing backstory.The Queen's Army: 4.5 stars. This short story was about Wolf (or Ze'ev), and the challenges he had to face when becoming a part of Levana's mutated wolf-soldier army. This was an especially intense story, and gives us the background I was searching for with Wolf. Since he isn't a very outgoing character, I feel like this is a very important addition to his story, and I can relate to him more now that I know more about him.Carswell's Guide To Being Lucky: 5 stars. Thorne is one of my favorite characters in this series, mainly because he reminds me so much of Han Solo. And I also think that Han Solo would have a similar backstory. Of course Thorne's jokes and quips were awesome, but seeing and understanding his past and how it influenced his later personality was fun to read about. It was great making connections between his 13-year-old self and the man he was going to become, such as his type of girl. Those similarities were really what sold this for me, and I felt like I was reading about the same Thorne having adventures on the Rampion.After Sunshine Passes By: 4 stars. Even the title makes me tear up a little bit. Cress's imprisonment on the satellite is heartbreaking, but knowing that she gets her happy ending in the end somehow made the whole ordeal worthwhile.The Princess and the Guard: 4.5 stars. Now THIS is what I was hoping for in Stars Above. Winter and Jacin are probably the two main characters we know the least about, especially since Jacin is so internalized, and their backstory was desperately needed. This one was mostly based on the cruelty of Levana, and the relationship between Winter and Jacin. Non-hallucinating Winter is just as awesome as crazy Winter, and sort of reminded me of Cinder and Cress in certain ways. We also get to see a tremendous show of strength on Winter's part, when Levana forces her to carve up her own face, and she refuses to let even a tear fall during the event. And although it was horrifying, this somehow makes her craziness even more endearing.The Little Android: 5 stars. This one got me the most. Even though it has no relation to the rest of the Lunar Chronicles, aside from a small cameo by Cinder, this is a very heartbreaking, tearjerking story that will definitely tug on your heartstrings. It's a retelling of the original Little Mermaid tale, and just like the original, this story has a very bittersweet ending. It chronicles the events that follow after an android falls in love with a human engineer, and rejects her original programming. This android reminded a lot of Iko, just a little quieter. It made me wonder if there a lot of independent androids in the Lunar Chronicles universe, but it mostly just made me tear up a lot.The Mechanic: 4.5 stars. Not an extremely important story, but a pretty good one. This is the first meeting between Kai and Cinder told from Kai's perspective, and it is very lightweight. I know some readers aren't huge fans of reverse POV's stories, but it is a really interesting and insightful addition that sheds some light on Kai's early motivations and personality, and of course, why he fell for Cinder.Something Old, Something New: 5 stars. An amazing, fun, detailed epilogue of the entire Lunar Chronicles. It tells the story of Cinder and the rest of the Rampion crew reuniting on Scarlet's farm for an unforgettable event. (cough, WEDDING, cough.) This is once again told from Cinder's POV, and is a really neat way to wrap everything up, although it did serve as a reminder that this fantastic, wonderful series is finally over. However, it was the best conclusion an author could have written, given the circumstances.Overall, this was a truly great, astounding short story collection that ties up all loose ends, and answers any questions a reader may have about the Lunar Chronicles. Each story was completely filled with action, adventure, emotional conflict, and descriptive, enticing writing. No one else could have done it better. Farewell, Lunar Chronicles.

I've been looking for ways to deal with the fact that I didn't learn how to spell when I was a kid, and I've been looking for decades. I'm a bit unusual because I cracked the reading code when I was very young and was reading way above age level even before I got out of grade school. But the spelling fell aside, in part because of the way they taught spelling when I was a kid, or rather did not teach it.Basically their method was to have you learn every word in the English language one word at a time. Reading was by see and say, a truly rotten method for anyone with a learning disability. I have dyslexia, so I have a learning disability.This book was written for adults with dyslexia. It might work for adults in general, or at least I think so. I haven't actually done the program yet, but I've already learned a lot just reading the beginning material. I'll get to my own problem words in a few days. I'm already collecting them.Some of the things they suggest are things I've done, but what makes this book special is that it is ORGANIZED. So far there have been no spelling rules, or almost none. I expect that I ought to locate a set of rules too. They might have done better if they had put a set of rules in the back of the book even though they don't really like teaching with them. But there is no question that, although it is not perfect, I've been actively looking for this book for 30 or 40 years, and here it is. Finally!*****It has been two weeks since I wrote the review. I've done their weekly exercise twice now. And I've learned 10 words (5 each week) that were special problems for me. The system works.

My step son is dislexic and this book has been a tremendous help to him. Even though he had special classes at school, they basically taught him NOTHING - Thank you very much John Glenn High School in Michigan....thanks for nothing!!! Collect your government money for special ed. and then don't have it. he learned more from this book than he learned at your school in 4 years!!!

It helps you to learn words without spelling rules sense most good spellers use their memory to spell words, not rules.

I have learned a lot. I like how it breaks down the words, and theres a lot of examples to help. I would strongly recommend this.

If you sew, appreciate custom made items or are looking for inspiration, this is the book for you. Suzanne Perron leaves nothing to the imagination when it comes to gorgeous dresses and what it takes to go from a sketch to the finished dress. The only down side is that unlike the book Bridal Couture by Susan Khalje there are no how-tos. But the photographs alone are worth the price of the book.

i am a technical designer who's been wanting to broaden my skills with making lush evening and wedding gowns. i was a little hesitant about buying this book in the first place, i was under the impression that it was a technical book but the description was vague on that subject. well i got the book and while disappointed that it wasn't a technical book i still kept it because it gave good information on conducting fittings and dealing with clients. while also having pictures of the process of making the gowns. she gives out a lot of good information on the preparation, foundation, and work it takes to make these one of a kind gowns. i hope in the future the author does a technical book cause i would totally snatch that up.

This lovely book goes far beyond just pretty pictures of carnival and wedding gowns. Conception, clients, intricate construction are integral parts of this beautifully executed volume. As a bonus, our museum here currently has an exhibit of some of Ms. Perron's gowns and I was fortunate to see them 'up close and personal.' If you are a seamstress who constructs gowns of any kind, you will adore this book.

Well worth the money if your a fan of Suzanne Perron; you'll probably enjoy looking at her dresses and love this book but, in reading it, I found I'm not! I found her life story less than engaging (unusual, I'll read just about anything and I enjoy reading about crafty/artisty types) and I found her dresses quite unattractive. The section on the technical side of creating her dresses was interesting but too short to be very useful but was the only part that really held my interest.(If she ever publishes a book on the subject I'll buy it immediately.)A disappointment for me but a beautifully presented book that would probably please others very much.

In comparing this book with, say Goldberg's "Genetic Algorithms..." (may be the most popular genetic algorithms text), this book reads more like a German habilitation thesis (which I imagine it may have served as such), where as Goldberg's book seems more of a light introduction for the mathematically uninitiated. Indeed, Back's book seems quite scholarly with lots of useful references, and gives a good introduction to not only genetic algorithms, but also to evolutionary strategies (a paradigm that is most applicable to Euclidean-type search spaces) and evolutionary programming(simular to ES and not to be confused with genetic programming).I found Chapters 1 and 2 quite good, in that Chapter 1 presented the biological motivations for evolutionary computing along with a brief introduction to the theory of computation and computational complexity, while Chapter 2 gave a very good introduction to the above-mentioned evolutionary computing paradigms. The remainder of the book reads more like a report on the author's experiments in evolutionary computing.It is important to note that Goldberg's book does not cover Evolutionary Strategies, which I have found to be a more fruitful approach since it is specifically designed for Euclidean space where many if not most interesting optimization problems are formulated in.Finally, I offer bit of advice for those who plan to read through this book. Some of the definitions are stated with such generality that they seem very opaque upon first reading. It is very important to understand them, so do not give up! Once the defintions are understood, the algorithms will seem much easier to comprehend. In fact, the algorithms have a very simple outline:i) initialize populationii) while the terminating condition is not yet met: recombine to form new population members, mutate the population members, select the most fit population members to form the next generation. The partial analyses provided for the algorithms can be skipped on first reading.

Although this book is much less popular than Goldberg's and Mitchell's, it is the most complete reference on evolutionary algorithms in my opinion. If you're looking only for an introduction to EAs, this may not be the perfect book for you (the 2 other ones are more concise) but if you're seeking a detailed review of foundations of EAs, this book is excellent. It provides mathematical insight, and examples of how to implement such algorithms.

I actually rated this book 4.5 stars.Months ago, when I first got my Kindle app I found an interesting looking freebie on Amazon and so I got myself "Brie's First Day of Submissive Training". This shortish instalment turned out to be as intriguing and hot as it had sounded and I was eager to find out what would happen next. However, I don't like having to buy my books in bits and pieces so I curbed my curiosity and decided to concentrate on other, complete stories. A few months later I was delighted to see that the nine Brie stories had been combined into one book. I bought it and read it immediately and haven't regretted the decision for one second.This is a fascinating story for anyone who is interested in BDSM and everything it entails. Through Brie the reader gets an insight into what it takes to become a good submissive. In six short weeks Brie and her fellow students are taken through their paces and transformed from innocent wannabees into accomplished submissives. Not a single aspect of submission (as far as I could tell) is ignored. Along with Brie the reader is introduced to obedience, bondage, floggings, anal sex, objectification, oral sex, humiliation and a variety of other experiences of which Kinbaku (Japanese bondage) was my personal favourite. What I really liked about the way this story was told was that it was a learning process for Brie. She didn't embrace everything she was introduced to with immediate enthusiasm. A lot of the things she is introduced to are acts she had previously thought hateful or scary. She is training to become a submissive, and as with all training, this means pushing boundaries and going beyond what you think you are capable of and comfortable with.As the subject of this book suggests most of this book revolves around sexual acts. I mean, how else are you going to train submissives? But thankfully there was also room for a bit of background story. So the reader gets a chance to get to know Brie and appreciate how she grows. I liked the way Brie was torn between several of the men she interacts with. In most romances I can't stand characters who can't make up their mind about who they love and want to be with but in this book it made real sense. When you experience such deep and emotionally charged exchanges it would be hard not to develop feelings for those you are so very intimate with. Of course the fact that it kept me guessing as to who Brie would end up with in the end was a nice added bonus.I also liked that in these books all the Doms and submissives are individuals; they are young or old, well built or flabby, black or white, nasty or nice; they are just like everybody else: unique. A lot of popular books with a BDSM theme seem to portray certain stereotypes as their main characters (the words billionaire, troubled past, and young and innocent spring to mind). It made a very nice change to read a book with this theme in which the characters came across as people I might actually meet in my day to day life.I also appreciated the way in which this book allowed the author to inform the reader about BDSM and submission without ever getting preachy. With the story set in a learning environment it made perfect sense that some of the lessons Brie was taught were shared with the reader. This means that the information that was given never interfered with the flow of the story but rather enhanced it.The only thing that bothered me a little bit was that it was obvious that this story had previously been published in shorter sections; whenever a new week of Brie's training starts you are treated to a bit of a recap from the previous one. And while I'm sure this is useful if you're reading the story in instalments, it is not necessary and at times a bit annoying when you are reading the whole story in one, continuous book.So now I'm faced with a dilemma. The author has recently published the first instalment of the second book in Brie's series. And while I'm very curious to see what is going to happen to her next I'm no more enthusiastic about reading books in instalments then I was all those months ago. The big question is: will I be able to curb my curiosity once again or will I submit to the urge to find out what happens next? Only time will tell.

I haven't even finished reading this book yet and I am already rating it 5 stars. You know that feeling when you try on a really expensive pair of shoes or a great bra and you can't even feel you're wearing anything because it's so comfortable? That's what reading this book is like. The author is either a genius at writing or has a damn good editor because I didn't even realise I was reading; the story proceeds just so effortlessly. You open to the first page and suddenly, you are Brie, entering this kinky world and being taken through the Submissive Training Center almost as if it's happening for real. I don't find many erotica authors I like (I don't even really like 50 Shades), and I am not into BDSM AT all, so to enjoy this book so much, I think, just reflects the awesomeness of this author. Skill, people. I hope every erotica author reads this book and this review and takes some lessons from Red Phoenix. We need more books like these!

This series has to be my favorite BDSM title series. I love how they go into depth in exploring BDSM topics and interests and explain the feelings and safety behind them. I love this series so much that I asked my husband to read it as well. He is currently in book two and I must say that our love life has more than improved. He is exploring a side of himself that he has never acknowledged before and I have these books to thank for the excitement going on in my bedroom these days. Can't say enough good things about these books!
