I enjoyed this book. I recommend it to people ages 13+, as there is a curse in it, but otherwise, it is a wonderful book. I would read it for myself, if I were you.

I recently went on vacation to Milan and it was fun having read this book and walk through the streets that Leonardo Da Vinci did. Interestingly, I mentioned the Mona Lisa to our tour guide and she said that although most of the world refers to the painting as the Mona Lisa, in Italy they call it the Gioconda.

I was disappointed in the content for a children's book. However, the author's style is age appropriate.

The back of this book promises a historically-based novel about one of Leonardo's apprentices, Salai, the relationship they share with a duchess named Beatrice, and the real answer to why the Mona Lisa was ever painted to begin with. And the start of the book is exactly that: Salai, a young thief without much of a future, becomes accidentally employed by Leonardo DaVinci, the greatest artist of their time. Employed by the Duke of Milan at the time, Leonardo introduces Salai to art, the court, and to the duke's young wife, Beatrice, who is proud to be plain-faced but full of spirit. And that's about as good as the book gets, honestly.I can't really explain why I didn't like it except to say that I feel like Konigsburg didn't know what book she was writing. The "mystery" of the Mona Lisa is never explained or even really fleshed out; in fact, the famous painting doesn't get its first mention until the last three pages. She attempts, in those pages, to draw this long, complex comparison of the woman who became the Mona Lisa to Beatrice, but it feels rushed and entirely out of place. All of a sudden, WHAM!, the explanation smacks the reader in the face. There's no subtlety, there's no craft, it just...is. Salai's interior monologue basically says And Leonardo will paint this woman because she will remind him of Beatrice, the end. It felt completely thrown togetherMy other challenge -- and the one, honestly, that upset me more -- was the haphazard way she threw in details that I find it hard to believe ever existed. She admits that Leonardo didn't think much of the real Salai. In his notebooks, he described him as a thief, a liar, and a mule-head. It's clear that he had some fondness because, in the end, Salai was mentioned in his will, but the book raises Salai up as both a liar and a wonderful human being. I felt like he was completely inconsistent, because even though he was constantly doing small, immoral things, he was also the lens through which we were meant to see the wonder of this world, and it contrasted severely. More than that, Konigsburg villianized DaVinci. A lot. In the last chapters, he's described as a petty man with low self esteem and it's insinuated that Salai is becoming the person who decides what he will do, when, and with who. I find it hard to believe that one of the greatest minds of the human race would be manipulated left and right by a twenty-year-old. I also just find it hard to believe that anything in this book happened the way it was described.I was really disappointed. I thought this would be mysterious and fun. Instead, it was boring, bland, and unrealistic. The only boon was that it was short, but that really didn't win it enough points for me to find it at all worth while.

Terrific book

Excellent read for those that want to brush up on their history of Leonardo.

As a supplement to our studies of the Renaissance this year, this book was an excellent choice for 7th grade. I loved the aspect of how relationships can change and grow - a perfect theme for emerging adolescents.

This is a great book, full of wit and humor! Konigsburg has done it again! I hope our homeschool curriculum will have more of her works!😀👍👍👍😺

One of the late Carl Sagan’s hallmark qualities was to engage in speculation to a degree that was unusual for a rigorous scientist. While this sometimes resulted in largely unnecessary scorn and mockery from his fellow scientists, his honest skepticism combined with his open-mindedness also led to some of the most memorable popular science writing of our times. These qualities are on full display in this fascinating book, written in 1977 . Sagan tackles a topic that is far from his expertise – the evolution of human intelligence – and largely succeeds in presenting highly thought-provoking theses for us to ponder. Much of the book discusses what was then frontier research in neuroscience, but what makes it different are Sagan’s regular speculations. The book tries to make sense of two important facts about the human brain: our strikingly different cognitive abilities relative to other animals and the interplay between emotion and reason. Sagan is quite upbeat about chimp intelligence and he spends a sizable part of the book talking about experiments that reveal chimps’ prowess in using sign language. He also talks about the mysterious communication used by whales and dolphins that still defies comprehension. Clearly apes can come quite close to using the kind of simple vocabulary that humans do, so why are humans the only ones which actually crossed the language barrier, profiting from breakthrough linguistic inventions like recursive embedding and complex sentence construction? Sagan advances a chilling and all too likely hypothesis, that humans killed off apes who they thought came dangerously close to mimicking their linguistic capabilities. Given how closely language is tied to human intelligence, it then ensured that humans would be the dominant species on the planet; chimps, gorillas and orangutans were presumably saved because they lived deep inside the inaccessible jungle. Sagan’s discussion of animal intelligence hems uncomfortably close to ethical discussions about the killing of animals that are still so pertinent; what gives us the right to clearly assign personhood to a one-month-old fetus but not to a two-year-old chimpanzee, to have serious qualms about terminating the life of the former while cheerfully ending the life of the latter? Coming on the heels of this comparison is Sagan’s commonsense (in my opinion) take on abortion: he tries to reach a compromise by arguing that it should be unethical to kill a human fetus after it develops the first rudiments of a cerebral cortex, presumably the one thing that distinguished humanity from other species. Later work would probably cast some doubt on this assertion, since reptiles have also now been found to possess cortical cells. This part provides a good segue into the even more interesting part of the book which deals with some fascinating speculations on the reptilian origins of human intelligence. Sagan’s fulcrum for this discussion is a theory by psychiatrist Paul McLean who divided the brain into three parts (the “triune brain”). At the top is the uniquely human cerebral cortex which controls thought, reason and language. The second layer is the limbic system containing structures like the amygdala which modulate emotions like anxiety. The limbic system also includes the basal ganglia and the R complex, an ancient, inherited assembly responsible for instinctive behavior, including responding to reward and punishment. Finally you have the “neural chassis” which just like a car’s chassis includes structures like the brain stem responsible for basic and primitive functions: breathing, blood flow and balance for instance.Sagan’s focus is the R complex, part of the “reptilian brain”. It is quite clear that parts of this brain structure are found in reptiles. Reptiles and mammals have an ancient relationship; reptiles originated 500 million years before human beings, so we came into a world that was full of hissing, crawling, terrestrial, arboreal and aquatic reptiles. As Sagan describes, it’s no surprise that many of the world’s foremost civilizations and religions used reptiles as key symbols; from the snake in Eden to the worship of snakes in ancient Egypt to snake symbolism in modern day India, reptiles and human have shared an indelible bond. Reptiles have also often featured as omens in dreams dictating the fates of empires and societies. Some of our reptilian connections raise mundane but fascinating questions; for instance, Sagan wonders whether the shushing sound we make for communicating silence or disapproval is a leftover of the hissing sound of reptiles. But how does this relationship contribute to our behavior? It is here that the book takes off from firm ground and starts gently gliding on speculation.Sagan’s main springboard for investigating the R complex is Roger Sperry’s seminal work in delineating the separate roles of the left and right hemispheres of the brain. As Sperry demonstrated in amazing split-brain studies, the left brain is more logical and analytical while the right is more synthetic imaginative. Sagan’s contention is that the right brain is really the essence of our reptilian origins, helping us fantasize and imagine, and it’s also a key part of what makes us creative human beings. This is most prominent when we are dreaming. Notice that dreams almost never include details of problem solving, instead they feature highly imaginative scenarios, part familiar and part alien that seem to be largely driven by our fears and hopes: are we partly seeing the world through our ancient reptilian neuroanatomy when we are dreaming, then? Are dreams holdovers from a prehistoric world where, because of inadequate shelter and protection, we had to stay alert and awake during the night to engage with snakes and crocodiles on their own terms? And in the ensuing history of civilization, did reptilian anatomy contribute to our achievements in art and music? Sagan believes that we should encourage the operation of our reptilian brain, constantly tempering its excesses with the logical constraints of the left hemisphere. This distinction between right and left brain behavior also raises very interesting questions regarding whether we can suppress one or another temporarily using drugs and surgery. In fact, it’s likely that that is partly what hallucinogens like LSD do. Here we see Sagan the Renaissance Man, trying to bridge hard scientific thinking with artistic intuition. With its bold style and engaging language, “The Dragons of Eden” won a Pulitzer Prize. While I was aware of it, I always thought it would be too dated. I now realize that I was wrong and am glad I read it; it has given me plenty of fodder to think about and has prompted me to seek out new research on the topic. The book asks fascinating questions about our kinship with other creatures and about the evolution of our brain, topics that will be of perpetual and consummate interest as long as our species is around.

He put facts into the book that impressed me as an young scientist. I first read this book while attending a management training course. The teacher recommended that I read the book as it would help me understand how the human brain functions and how it evolved to function in that way. Most people would not think about this book as a management book, but it really emphasies how the reptilian brain is over laid by the mammalian brain. The reptilian brain is where strong emotions are generated that are controlled by the overlying mammalian brain. It really helps understand the emotional issues in our lives and our interactions with other people.

I still have my 1977 original printing of this book and wanted to re-read it after 40 years. I purchased the hard-cover version, said to be first printed in 2009, as I expected the many visuals to be easier to examine on a larger page than in the original 4"x7" format -- although I was surprised not to find some indication of the difference in page size. I just received the hard-cover book: it is exactly the same layout as the original, just with a hard cover. Bad surprise. With adequate information, I would not have made a purchase.

We are in 1977, Sagan is guessing about the development of human intelligence. He is thrilled that our big brains are speeding up development otherwise done by painstakingly slow natural selection. Remembering us that creativity and problem-solving are our unique skills. I am writing this in 2018 (more than 50 years later) and there are dozens books out there discussing recent explanations on the workings of the human brain. But Sagan is still very entertaining and original. For example, for him consciousness and intelligence are result of "mere" matter sufficiently complexly arranged (his own words). Therefore, there is nothing stopping us from building intelligent machines. Just our own intelligence!

As Sagan sets out early on, he is not an expert in any one subject here, but a jack of all trades. He serves as a bridge and synthesizer to the geniuses of their specialities and the rest of us. A must read. Some of the science is... dated, but on the whole his conjectures and larger narrative points are spot on

Great reading, although it can tend to "ramble" in typical Carl Sagan fashion. This is an older book where the period writers wrote with orthodox precision; something I enjoy. If you like the sciences life, you will enjoy this book.

Environmental Geoinformatics: Monitoring and Management (Environmental Science and Engineering)

From the Back Cover

There is no doubt that today, perhaps more than ever before, humanity faces a myriad of complex and demanding challenges. These include natural resource depletion and environmental degradation, food and water insecurity, energy shortages, diminishing biodiversity, increasing losses from natural disasters, and climate change with its associated potentially devastating consequences, such as rising sea levels. These human-induced and natural impacts on the environment need to be well understood in order to develop informed policies, decisions, and remedial measures to mitigate current and future negative impacts. To achieve this, continuous monitoring and management of the environment to acquire data that can be soundly and rigorously analyzed to provide information about its current state and changing patterns, and thereby allow predictions of possible future impacts, are essential. Developing pragmatic and sustainable solutions to address these and many other similar challenges requires the use of geodata and the application of geoinformatics. This book presents the concepts and applications of geoinformatics, a multidisciplinary field that has at its core different technologies that support the acquisition, analysis and visualization of geodata for environmental monitoring and management. We depart from the 4D to the 5D data paradigm, which defines geodata accurately, consistently, rapidly and completely, in order to be useful without any restrictions in space, time or scale to represent a truly global dimension of the digital Earth. The book also features the state-of-the-art discussion of Web-GIS. The concepts and applications of geoinformatics presented in this book will be of benefit to decision-makers across a wide range of fields, including those at environmental agencies, in the emergency services, public health and epidemiology, crime mapping, environmental management agencies, tourist industry, market analysis and e-commerce, or mineral exploration, among many others. The title and subtitle of this textbook convey a distinct message. Monitoring -the passive part in the subtitle - refers to observation and data acquisition, whereas management - the active component - stands for operation and performance. The topic is our environment, which is intimately related to geoinformatics. The overall message is: all the mentioned elements do interact and must not be separated. Â Hans-Peter B ahr, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr.h.c., Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany.

Review

'This real life story of the Durrell family is fascinating - Haag brilliantly traces their footsteps in pre-war Corfu, England and India' -Simon Nye, Writer, TV's The Durrells 'Family stories are worth telling, and this one is fascinatingly put together by Michael Haag. For few families present such an entertaining patchwork tale as the Durrells.' -Daily Mail 'Haag vividly evokes the time and the place with sumptuous descriptions ... [he] has written a love letter to an extraordinary family. As families and other animals go, the Durrells are a breed of their own.' - Daily Express 'Haag adds sadness and depth to a story that is superficially golden and charming, and which never stops being so. There is so much lustre here that nothing can tarnish it; the complications and grievances only make you admire the Durrells more. What a family, and what lives well lived' - Sunday Times

Years ago, when I was studying for my English O'Level, we studied My Family and Other Animals by Gerald Durrell, and it was hilarious. It was that book which made me aware of Lawrence Durrell and his writing, so that when I saw Monsieur, the first book of the Avignon Quintet out in bookstores I snapped it up, and as you know, that set off my life long love affair with Lawrence Durrell.Anyway, this book takes you behind the scenes of the time the family spent on Corfu. It starts with an overall view of the family and what happened before Corfu, and at the end follows up what happened to them afterwards. I already knew a lot of what's in this book, but that's because I've done lots of reading around Larry, but there were some interesting facts that were illuminating. For example, money wasn't the main reason the family moved to Corfu, it was concern over Mother's drinking - she often took to gin when she was depressed and lonely. As Larry and his wife Nancy had already decided to go to Corfu, it seems they felt it important to keep an eye on her!For those who haven't read much background on the family, you'll find it interesting, and also a little disturbing to find out just how much is fictionalised in a supposed non-fiction account of the family on Corfu. Recommended!

There was a little original material, and some of it was interesting, but about half of it is just excerpts from My Family & Other Animals. If you're buying this book the chances are around 100% that you've already read My Family, and are interested in the real story behind its fictionalized anecdotes. It's ok, but no more than that. I did appreciate the inclusion of the handwritten story by Gerald from when he was a kid. That bit was great.

I did enjoy this "background" information on the Durrell family. This PBS tv series "The Durrells in Corfu" got me interested in this family. The books by Gerald Durrell are very delightful. This author of this book, however notes discrepancies of certain events, people and timelines from Gerald's story. But then again, Gerald was writing what he remembered as a child. His view or Michael Haag's view isn't too different. Also good to see in this book are pictures of the actual family members and friends (but could do away with the nude ones!). Recommend the book to fans of Durrell family to get another perspective of their lives.

This book describes the lives of all the individuals of an amazing family. It traces their life in India and their return to England, the land of their forefathers. As they matured, the family left England for the serenity of Corfu, where their lives were influenced by a variety of interesting characters who called this island home. After several years the war began and the family fled Corfu before it was invaded by the Axis powers and the family split up and finally got back together after the war ended. The epilogue of the book describes the lives and successes of the individual members of the family and their failures and successes for the rest of their lives. This wasn't just an average family but a very special one which you must read the book to see just why.

Having watched the PBS series, I wanted to know more about the Durrells and I found this an enjoyable read. It is nice to escape to a place where there isn't constant political insanity. No murders, just an entertaining book with lots of insight into the family. I think I would have loved Corfu in that era leading up to WW II.

I’m always interested in gaining more insight into the complexities that made up Lawrence Durrell’s early life. I’ve never read anything by Gerald so I can’t attest to anything there. But I found this book sprinkled with gems about Lawrence Durrell’s years on Corfu, a much appreciated introduction to Margo, and a generally human rendition of the interwoven lives of those who sometimes appear only as backdrops for the main characters.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was easy reading and the pictures helped to clarify my image of the persons being spoken of I was not aware of the notoriety of all these writers but now I am the wiser. I would recommend the reading of it.

Great reading, especially if you love the PBS series. Spoiler alert: the real Durrels don’t physically resemble the actors in the series, except Gerald. Not a big deal either, as that is usually the case with making movies after real characters.

This movie makes a good interlude while reading Simon Callow's magisterial (now in four volumes) biography of Welles. CHIMES is a startling film. It's also a reminder of something that has not been, at least as far as I can discern even in a direct way by Callow, publicly addressed: that while the West in general has allowed millions of cultural excrescences, Orson for most of his redoubtable life, couldn't find work. Welles' struggles subsequent to THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS in general and his tribulations and vicissitudes with FALSTAFF in particular are, one might argue, indictments against a culture, a time, and an industry known as "the pictures." For anyone who cares about high-art and not merely aesthetic fabrications divorced from the sublime precincts of human achievement, CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT is one of those so-called "must-see" films--and this book is a must-read for those with taste, perspicacity, and, perhaps above all, conscience.

this has remained my favorite movie ever since seeing in in 1969 in London. The dialog is so rich that I wanted this book for that alone. Interviews and essays only make it better

Great book in a great series.

Arrived quickly and just as described. Thanks!

A great tool for better understanding the film.

Highly recommended... you truly get the feel of traveling along with David as your tour guide. You may even want to go on a rainbow adventure of your own someday. I know I'm ready! --Lyndon Evans, Focus on the Rainbow blogsAll the world's a rebound! After David Jedeikin offers up his soon-to-be ex-boyfriend a pound of his own liver, he distracts himself with a rip-roaring, flashpacking trip around the gay globe! The best thing about travel, he finds, is getting deep enough into the jungle, desert, or snow slopes of Dubai to find a brand new perspective on his own reflection. --Jesse Archer, author of You Can Run: Gay, Glam, and Gritty Travels in South AmericaWander the Rainbow is a journey many of us imagine taking yet few have the courage to actually embark upon. Fortunately for us, David Jedeikin took the road less traveled and was brave enough to chronicle his experiences. This queerly bold adventure moves through exotic lands, delivering a story that's fun and funny, thrilling and thoughtful, honest and sexually exciting. --Rick Andreoli, Editor in Chief, Gay.com"My enjoyment of Wander The Rainbow is based on a simple and ancient premise: That the experience of other travelers is our best map to a strange land. Jedeikin's stories will delight you, warn you, make you laugh, perhaps even shock you. He describes a spectrum of adventures that will deepen your understanding of different cultures and enrich your sense of what it means to be human." --Alan Chin, author, Island Song, The Lonely War, and Match Maker"A uniquely intimate travelogue -- David Jedeikin offers a rich, thoroughly readable account of his continent-spanning journey." --Louis Peitzman, San Francisco Chronicle

During this time he managed to organize a world-record-breaking charity telethon, co-edit a start-up Internet magazine, and serve as assistant editor on a French-Canadian-Mexican made-for-TV production of Tarzan. For the moment, Jedeikin has laid down roots in San Francisco, where he works as a software engineer, but the lure of further travel is never far from his mind.

What a great read!I love stories that fuse world travel with an inner-journey of self-discovery. My sole critique is that the author only spent 17 pages on Steve—far too little real estate for this complex, compelling character. On page 290, the author asks, “Will Steve’s unpredictable nature spark a reprise of hostility?” Alas, we never find out what happens to Steve, this mysterious (and likely misunderstood) specimen of creative genius. Will he lose his mind? Will his life spiral out of control due to his unpredictable nature? Or will he buy the book, read through page 6 (where he discovers his pseudonym for the first time), and download the Kindle version so he can jump to every instance of the word “Steve” throughout the entire book. The author mentions “Steve” a total 30 times, by the way... again, far too little for my taste.Alas, we’ll never know what happens to Steve... unless the author gifts us a follow-up memoir. Ooooh, what I wouldn’t give to read a book that focuses exclusively on the trials and tribulations of the illustrious Steve!

David Jedeikin saved a life. His partner of three years was in need of a liver transplant, so David agreed to be his living donor. Shortly afterward, they broke up. In need of a "life experience" himself, David decides to take seven months off to travel the world. Traveling as a flashpacker, David sets out on a trip across six continents. We learn the origins of David and Bradley's relationship in the first eight page chapter actually entitled "Origins." The two are eleven years apart in age, and "in some respects come from different galaxies." Unfortunately, I didn't really have any sympathy for Bradley. He seems pompous and immature, and not very gracious toward David's decision to be his donor. Therefore, you almost feel sorry for David, especially after this quote near the end of Chapter 1:"In every one of the places I've called home since striking out from my birthplace it's been the same cycle, again and again: anticipation, hope, optimism, a new circle of friends, a new job, sometimes a new mate. And then...disappointment. Discord. Heartbreak. And the cycle begins anew."Wow! I'd want to escape and see the world too. Being a gay man myself, I could totally sympathize with David. I've had guys break my heart after I gave them a ring or even my heart 100%. But my liver? I can't imagine the heartbreak and turmoil David must have gone through. From California, to Denver, to his homeland of Montreal, to London, David is out of the country by page 16! Both the reader and David have put this behind them, and we're off to conquer the world. On the cover of the book is the following description: A true story of a living liver donation, an epic journey around the world, and a gay man's search for himself. Unfortunately, that middle part rings more true than the rest. Though David briefly revisits his situation with Bradley, it is not a mainstay of the book. In fact, when the author brings it up, the subject is usually dismissed after only a sentence or two, no more than a paragraph. Instead, the book becomes more of a travel log.In fact, his travel writing is so good David should write for Damron! He takes his readers on the journey with him in and out of hostels and bed and breakfasts, eating up local cuisine, and catching both the touristy and non-tourist attractions across the globe from London, Paris, Amsterdam, Egypt, Copenhagen, Germany, Israel, Tokyo and more!As for the latter part of that description, we're not really treated to much self discovery. Again, when David begins to tap into how he's feeling about his previous situation, he wraps it up in just a sentence or two and quickly moves on to his next passport destination. It doesn't seem like we are learning much about David, and neither is he. Instead, we are treated to history lessons of the places he's visiting. In fact, I was a little saddened by his constant recreational use of drugs, waistline obsession, and need to get laid. I was reminded of a gay jetsetter whose physical appearance and libido are top priorities. What did he learn from the journey? Well, it's wrapped up in the very last paragraph of the book. But by then, I had stopped reading this book as an emotional journey of a living liver donor and traded it for just a good travel journal. Jedeikin can definitely paint a picture of a place with words that makes you want to see it for yourself. As for the rest? I guess I was just expecting a bit more depth and emotion. I wanted to go to those places too.

Non fiction. Very well written story about a man's journey - real and metaphorical. The descriptions of the places he visited were really great, I wish I could travel like him:)I have to admit that it took me some time to fully immerse myself into David Jedeikin's huge book. For one thing, the narrative changed from the story of an apparently happy gay couple to one of tragedy when one half of the couple needs a liver transplant to a story that appeared to be about a now-single gay man literally traveling through the entire planet. But even then, the story split into two levels: one was the travelogue (which encompassed the main narrative) and one that was not as specific but still quite important: David's quest to figure out his place in the world. While I wouldn't say that I was intimidated by the size of the book--after all, David's story *needed* this much space to develop--it was, at times, an exhausting read. For David travels from one place to the next so fast that it almost felt like he was (literally) running away from everyone including himself. As a travelogue, it worked. As a gay book, um, I'm not feeling so sure. Despite all of David's hookups or romances in different countries (some more poignant than others), I got the feeling that he placed himself more as Jew than as a gay man. There were certain ""discovery"" moments when he reconnected with his faith (ironic since he's not particularly religious) that were understandable, but (to me) somewhat distracting. If anything, reading this book has really made me think about doing some serious travel in the near future. :) "

I found 'Wander the Rainbow' to be engaging, moving, and an over-all good read! I was especially taken with the spiritual journey and the morphing of a 'running away from it all and partying hard' trip into a deep, thoughtful, and introspective voyage of self-discovery. A very human voyage, albeit from a gay perspective. The writer's thoughts and feelings ring true; the descriptions of people and places are interesting, humorous, and informative; the language is expressive and erudite without being pompous; and the courage it took to put it all out there is truly commendable.
