(Some spoilers included.) I didn’t love the first book in this series but thought I’d give the 2nd a chance. In the first book Melissa, a crime novelist, went to ridiculous, unjustifiable lengths to “research” local crimes. She was pretty directly responsible for one death as she blundered her way to a conclusion. The second book started out promising. But when a romantic element is introduced the 47-year old Melissa turns into a hormonal teenager (or blithering idiot) incapable of rational thought and action. As in the first book, her character and intelligence seem questionable. She is not very observant or perceptive and is a blabbermouth (even though she assures everyone “you know it won’t go any further” and she complains about other “gossips”). There are some other unsavory aspects, including a tolerance of xenophobia, sexism and violence. Melissa totally discounts her lover’s hitting and bruising a young woman (“A slap in the face doesn’t exactly amount to grievous bodily harm, does it?”) In my opinion cozy mysteries should be light, charming and fun. These books are too annoying to be pleasant reading.

liked her first book. second book the main character seemed off because all she could think about was sex with another teacher. would not even consider all the possibilities of who the murderer was. I hate it when writers make the main character look like an idiot that can't control herself. disappointed in making a middle aged woman look pitiful

So many twists and turns with well developed characters and a delightful writer/heroine......I could not put this book down, although I knew I'd be very tired in the morning! The Cotswolds seems the place for UK writers to place their cozy mysteries, but this author really brings the story to the forefront rather than the focus on location. Melissa Craig is such an interesting, smart, intuitive character that I had to keep reading because I got so caught up in her rapidly moving mind and changes in direction with her storyline. Her characters are so well fleshed out and human and likeable.....most of them.....lol . Can't wait to start on the second book in the series. So worth the read!

Love the settings and the plots. But I'm curious, what decade is the time frame? No computer or internet, no cell phones. Cars like the Ford Fiesta and VW Golf. I'm thinking about 1982? Would be nice if there were some clues such as historical references or national leaders' names dropped to help place the time.

You truly won't want to stop reading. Although I suspected the murder, I didn't want to suss it out because I enjoyed the plot development so much. I will move right on to book 3 and I have happily preordered 4 & 5.

British cozy, good dialogue, some snarky humor, very well written. No, I didn’t guess ‘who done it’.

I liked the book overall, but I was not really a fan of this one overall. I am looking forward to the next book.

I love the Melissa Craig series. !!
