Review

“Burro Genius invites the reader to analyze on their own past and reflect on how one’s actions and words directly affect those one comes in contact with.” (La Prensa-San Diego)“A redemptive book, a celebration of courage and tenacity…. Real writing, as Villasenor shows us, embodies the very same qualities.” (Los Angeles Times Book Review)“A powerful memoir.” (San Diego Union-Tribune)“Spirited...[Villasenor’s] retelling of sometimes humorous, sometimes chilling childhood experience is at once painful and gratifying. He imaginatively and poetically remembers his tumultuous childhood with the simplicity of a child and the introspection of a sage.” (Publishers Weekly)

Amazing account of growing up in 1940's Southern California. Villasenor has crafted a beautiful narrative that is still relevant today. I cannot recommend this book enough, and it should be a must read for anyone who is a teacher or planning on entering the profession. Students who find themselves feeling like an "other" or outsider at school would probably also be inspired by the way that Villasenor succeeded in spite of his teachers and his undiagnosed dyslexia.

I had a hard time getting into Burro Genius at the beginning. But once I got past reading about the man as an adult and got into reading about Victor as a child I could not put it down. Victor is probably one of the most influential and relatable authors for Mexican-Americans everywhere. His father reminded me of my father, with all of his words of wisdom and his way of telling life lessons. These characters are in my heart like real people. I find myself thinking about Chavaboy, Lupe and even the "help". It has also broadened my understanding on how important it is to have good rolemodels amd teachers in life. I have taken some of the advice and lessons and have applied them to my own life.

Complex and at times maddening. What drew me more is the fact that this centers on a middle to upper class Mexican American family whose younger son is treated like crap in school because of his Mexican heritage. It doesn't help that he has problems with reading. A raw look into the education of a Chicano that was beaten time and again by the very teachers that were supposed to help him.

It taught me more as an anglo millennial male about a topic I knew noting about before. I was taught since grade school about the plight of black children in the public schools before the civil rights movement. I was taught nothing of the systematic racism directed toward the hispanic youth in the same era. I sympathise now with my latino friends' grandparents who went through this at 1st or second generation immigrants.

A great book especially if you live in the Oceanside/North San Diego County area. Victor was apparently dyslectic back in the day when it was not diagnosed. It is a fabulous memoir of his childhood, the culture of that time period, and the struggles Latinos faced. It also brings to mind how much the Latino culture has become a part of our heritage. a great read.

My first memoir...and loved it! As a teacher, Victor's story made me think about the students I teach and have taught...each one's story unique...each one special. I read this with my College ESL class and then followed it with Crazy Loco Love by Villasenor...a great combo...and my students, who for many this was the first novel they have read in English, could relate with him and loved it too! He is a exemplary model of success through perseverance. I look forward to reading more of his books in the near future!

Victor's storytelling magic lies in his very natural ability to make you feel as if you are 'right there' as an observor or silent participant in the experiences and adventures he is describing. His stories are treasures because they take his Latino readers back to their own lives in this country AND they offer non-Latino readers a golden opportunity to experience life as seen through the eyes of an immigrant. This particular book, BURRO GENIUS, is just such a story. The key to understanding and feeling what Victor writes about is to try and 'check your cultural baggage at the door' and experience the stories with a clean canvas.

I was born in America, like Victor. I am not Hispanic. I relate to this book because my ancestors were from Italy. They came to America with very little, and with no knowledge of English. They built businesses, some of which flourish to this very day! They worked hard - often much harder than the people for whom they worked. They educated their children, often with very little help from the American school system. They survived drought, hunger, abuse, unfeeling teachers, uncaring political leaders. This is about Victor. And it is about all the people who built America. It is about you, me, our friends and relatives, our neighbors. Please read this. And please read WALKING STARS with your children. You are, after all -- each and every one of you -- a Burro Genius Miracle Maker!
