Kate Rheaume-Bleue is an excellent writer. I wrote a comment on her interview on Youtube that I will just paste here since I would be covering the same issues anyway. Some of the reviews here have already pointed out some of the limitations of the book and the fast moving nature of the knowledge surrounding K2 which make a static book sort of a futile effort. But it is a good start, especially if you have no background with K2.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------It is the best of the current crop of books popularizing K2. The only problem with her work is that she is Canadian so has limited experience with MK-4 in her practice (due to nanny-state potency restrictions there). It is absolutely not correct that MK-4 and MK-7 have the same effect and that dosage is the only difference. Pretty much all independent researchers acknowledge that if you could only take one, MK-4 is superior in most respects.The primary people who advocate MK-7 exclusively over MK-4 are the Dutch researchers on the payroll, directly or indirectly via sponsored research, of the big MK-7 producers and then the main benefit they point out is the longer half-life (not really a benefit if you know what serum half-life means). Even the Japanese prefer MK-4 for high-dose therapeutic uses. All you have to do is go to PubMed and start reading some of the abstracts or do a web search on mk4 vs mk7 to get a broader and more informed perspective.The MK-7 manufacturer sponsored research seems always careful to not directly compare with MK-4 (no non-inferiority trials). If they did we would discover that MK-7 is not found in the brain or the saliva, MK-4 is and it is neuroprotective. MK-7 does not cross the placenta and is not at significant amounts in breast milk. MK-4 is carried by HDL (which accounts for its more rapid clearing), whereas MK-7 is carried by VLDL (which causes it to linger in the blood instead of being picked up by the tissues). MK-4 is the body's preferred form from the time of the origin of the human species. Natto with MK-7 has only been a significant part of anyone's diet for maybe a millennium. If it needs to, the human body will transform available K1 into MK-4 (granted, not very effectively) not MK-7.You wouldn't guess it by the way it is marketed, but even the fermented derived form of MK-7 is about as far from natto as you can get. I suppose it does not really matter the source as long as the end product provides the stated potency.Even more interesting is the fact that their newest product is actually synthetic MK-7 which is much cheaper to produce. Nothing wrong with that. It is a purer product than their naturally derived one. They even named it MenaQ7 PURE. Both of their products strip out the naturally occurring cis-isomer form of MK-7. Nothing wrong with that, either. The isolated trans-isomer form is what is wanted anyway.The point to take away is that people get a warm fuzzy when they see the word natural associated with MK-7. Commercial naturally derived MK-7 (specifically MenaQ7) is far removed from nature and has nothing to do with natto. The company even says their synthetic version is bio-equivalent and nature-identical to their fermented version (i.e., you can't tell the difference). Soon, if not already, most all MK-7 on the market will be synthetic because it is purer and cheaper to make. [...] (I suspect Amazon will zap this link so I will also put it in the comments.)Even the lovely Kate couldn't resist the financial lure of becoming a paid spokesperson for an MK-7 marketer (the vitamin company she works for). That only slightly detracts from her excellent book and she would have had to become a smuggler to become personally familiar with MK-4 in her practice anyway. But as always, when it comes to the validity of advice, always follow the money. There are good things to be said for MK-7 (I take it myself) but it is disingenuous to suggest it is somehow superior overall on its own to MK-4. The evidence does not support that view. They both have related and differing effects. It probably does make sense to take both.The real problem is that well-heeled marketing and patent collection oriented companies that manufacture MK-7 use research funds as a means of marketing their specific products via carefully structured and relentless research programs. The end user requires much diligence to wade through it all and discern actual value. And as always, follow the money...

I read this book in early 2015 and thought I'd try vitamin K2. I've been taking it for over two years now, 5mg of the Carlson brand of the MK-4 form of K2. In the first week of taking it, it helped clean up the tartar on my teeth. I've had that effect continuously for over two years. By the way, I tried taking an appropriate amount of the MK-7 form of K2 and it gave me hives over all of my body. I quickly switched to MK-4 and have had no problems. I know the book mentions taking 45 mg of K2, but I only seem to need 5mg. I also had a dexa scan and I have a fantastic scores on my bone density, although I don't have any earlier scores to compare that to.I thought this book was fascinating at the time I read it and I still find that to be true. I take vitamins D3, K2, and vitamin A. Hopefully this will keep my bones strong my whole life. Since it works on my teeth, I'm hoping it is also working on my bones and arteries.

01/05/2018 Taking Vitamins K2, A and D3 has changed my life. The body works on a triage system: Survival is first, reproduction is second. If you only take one of the three vitamins, you automatically become deficient in the other two. Vitamin K2 is needed to direct Calcium to your bones and teeth, otherwise it also becomes plaque build-up in one's arteries. The body is constantly building up new bones and teeth and tearing down the old. Vitamin A directs the old calcium to the kidneys, and it is excreted via your urine. In the US Vitamin D3 is added to milk, orange juice, and most calcium (plus magnesium and zinc) supplements. As a result of all these vitamin D3 supplements, the body becomes deficient in K2 and A. If you take the same amount of Vitamin A and D3, you won't become toxic in either one. Apparently in the US nobody realizes that you need to take the same amount of both vitamins. If I had been taking these vitamins I would not have had two blood clots in 2014. I started losing hair on my scalp (I have a better understanding of how upsetting this can be). The doctor's told me that I had too many more serious problems. They did not realize that the hair loss was a symptom. (To be fair to the doctors, they only have one semester of nutrition, which includes information on vitamins.) I have stopped losing hair!!! These vitamins can reverse type 2 diabetics (see page 126 for the recommended dosage of Vitamin K2), prevent Alzheimer's, help prevent cancer, slow down the aging process--I can't possibly list all of the benefits. Look at pages 31-32 and 144 to see the difference in children's teeth. These vitamins, if taken throughout the pregnancy help form the fetus's face (they will be able to breath through their nose), and the child will not need braces. Braces cost at least $5,000 or more. The mother's labor will also be easier. The first two months of taking these vitamins my left leg went down 4 inches in circumference--and that was below the knee! (26 inches down to 22 inches). Instead of just being able to lift my left food 2 or 3 inches from the floor I can now lift it at least 12 inches. (That is sitting down.) My body is doing so much better; the only difference was taking the vitamins. These are so many medical problems that can be prevented or reversed. Do your body a favor, and start taking these vitamins.

I purchased this book for my daughter, who is in college and discovering new cuisines that she enjoys. When she asked for a Middle Eastern cookbook for Christmas, I found this one on Amazon and based on the reviews thought it would be a good purchase.My daughter loves the book. She flipped through it with me after receiving it and pointed out several recipes she looks forward to trying. She said the ingredient lists are simple enough (although at IU, she has access to several international markets and can purchase special ingredients if necessary) and the directions are easy to follow. The photos in the book are appetizing, as are the descriptions of the various recipes. I know she is looking forward to trying many of the recipes--she is very excited about having this book at her disposal.I would recommend this book to anyone who has curiosity about Middle Eastern foods and cooking.

You don't have to be from the Middlle East to want to own & use this book. The current trend encourages us to reach beyond regular American cooking to try a variety of tasty, appetizing foods rich with cinnamon, cloves, and other Middle Eastern spices. Ingredients are mostly obtainable in any grocery store, the recipes run from time consuming to relatively simple off-your-shelf supplies, and all are revealed with mouth-watering color photographs. So many dishes are vegetarian, so they are economically advantageous for the thrifty buyer; beans of all sorts, rice, onion and tomato rich ingredients make up for any lack of "animal flesh" in many recipes.

A must have cook book for all cooks. The book includes foods of the Middle East including the flag and countries these recipes that country is best known for.The Author, Maria Khalife did a superb job bringing foods of the Middle we all know and love to our table, recipies I grew up with and and more. It is a culunary journey of foods of the Middle Eastern world all in one book. Page after page the book was well thought out, easy to understand and filled with mouth watering photos. Included is a glossary with descriptions of ingredients used in the Middle East. I am planning to purchase more copies of this book for each of my three daughters, I am keeping this one.Norma

This was a birthday gift for my sister who's been trying to cookmiddle eastern dishes for her palestinian husband and turns outit was a great gift for BOTH of them. The instructions were easyto understand; big colorful photos and she was able to followmany of the recipes easily and learned new twists on somedishes she's already used to preparing.

This is a very fine recipe book. I like that the recipes give a country of origin even though I know that certain dishes are used all through the Middle East. I can see that each recipe is therefore a version of that dish. The recipes are easy to read and follow. I borrowed the book 3 times from the public library before I realized I needed to have my own copy.

This was a gift to a young woman who assists immigrant and refugee women get settled. I thought she would enjoy having another hospitable way to connect with them.

I enjoyed the book. It was used and markers and flags were left in it.

Gave this to our youngest daughter for a gift. She loves Middle Eastern cuisine and just loved this book,. She's had a great time with recipes and presenting the finished products to friends and family. Highly recommended

This workbook is great for first time AutoCAD users such as myself. Each section is clearly explained and the exercises at the end of each chapter reinforce what you just learned. There are usually more than one way to do something in AutoCAD and all the various ways to accomplish something are covered in this book. If you follow the reading and do the exercises as intended, you will learn the basics of AutoCAD from this workbook. I am looking forward to trying out the advanced book soon.

Since I don’t understand the terminology, dummies book was only slightly helpful.This book has helped a total novice “dummie”. I do the lesson step by step and then, WOW I get it. I can see the examples. I usually have to use a magnifying glass. Now this is how you write a how to book!I have been able to teach myself the basics for updating our space planning drawings.THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

Overall excellent reference for Fiesta owners. Very complete but its now time for it to be updated.

DETAILED. I use this as my detailed reference whenever I find pieces at estate sales or garage sales. When it comes to pictures, it's okay; but it has detail and history that most reference books don't.

You'll either love Bukowski or hate him. His writing is raw and crass and often gross. I'm a gd feminist and have read every Bukowski book in print with the exception of a few of his poetry books. If you're offended easily or uptight or prim, his stuff is not for you. If you want to go through the day to day foulness of a foul man's life with him inside his head in the most extraordinarily written diary-style books then Bukowski is for you.

I read Women immediately following Post Office, and it is also a part of my Esquire 75 Books Every Man Needs To Read reading challenge. Women is the 20th book on the list (not including books I will be rereading).After the death of his postal career along with the love of his life, Bukowski’s Chianski begins to scour trashy America for experience, art, booze, and sex. His career is beginning to take off and he can domore than merely survive in his existence, and he begins to explore himself and his relationships in this semi-autobiographical novel about much the same things as his other novels, but with a marked difference in literary style and execution as well as notoriety and accomplishment as an artist.The focus of this piece is easily the paper-thin relationships that Chianski surrounds himself with. Every escapade leads to some revelation about his manhood, his fame, and his constant brush with the women that seem to constantly contrast with his one vice – a penchant for finding the most emotionally unstable women to have weekend relationships with, and being both unsatisfied with the sex and relationship, and surprised when the women cling to him with fervent desire.In Women, Bukowski has improved and expanded his literary dance with being both anti-pedantic in diction and syntax while at the same time being misleading in his ability to screw intensive literary symbolism and devices into this somewhat simple work. The result is scrupulous, tireless literary and linguistic acrobatics that lead across the wasteland of white-trash slums and heighten Chianski’s vices and sexual escapades to that of religious reverence.Definitely deserves its place on Esquire's list.

Bukowski is an average writer and his subject in this book, "Women", is sometimes criminal. In chapter 72, he anal rapes the woman, "Mercedes." He even even writes, "I am a rapist." Is this cool? Hey look, I've read a lot of deviant writers, like Joyce and Pynchon and DFW; however for me, anal rape is over-the-line. Bukowski is sort of like William Burroughs who is constantly longing to have boy sex with Arab boys in, "Naked Lunch." Burroughs is by far a better writer than Bukowski, but Burroughs is just as perverted. I wrote a large novel and in it I do discuss sex. However again, I some morality. My book is titled, "Delbert's Bible." Oh also, I thought that it was very low for Bukowski to hit-on Cecilia as soon as her husband leaves. That was low. What man hits on his friends wife as soon as his friend leaves? Then later, of course, after his friend (William Keesing) dies, he tries again to bang his friends' grieving widow!!! Hey, I'm a pervert too, but I've got more class than that.

This is the final book of the Chinaski series. Henry Chinaski is now a moderately successful writer but still the same drunken lothario that I love to read about. In my mind, this is Bukowski at his best. Perhaps already widely known by others, I have no doubt that this book is part of the story behind Hank Moody of Californication. A model of clarity and simplicity, Bukowski's writing is always riveting to me. I'll be sad to see the series end.

If you want to read Bukowski's prose at its best, you've gotta read Women, Post Office and Ham on Rye. Phenomenal reads. You'll laugh til your stomach hurts, gasp in horror, and shake your head at the debauched ways of Hank Chinaski. A must-read for lovers of contemporary fiction. The bold, brash prose is addictive and flawlessly done -- raw and shameless.

When people ask me about Bukowski, I usually say, just try reading some. There is no one quite like him. The first time I read him, as a college student in the sixties, I was astonished that anyone so depraved could be so literate. As down-and-out as Jim Thompson, but with more booze and explicit, matter-of-fact sex. But for Bukowski, it's not so much about the sex as about the relationships (mostly unsatisfactory), and about the hard vicissitudes in the life of a marginally celebrated author and poet. Above all, Bukowski is funny."Women" is classic Bukowski, a book I have picked up many times over the years, either to read straight through or just to browse. Try some. If you find him addicting, there is lots more.

Let's start off by saying...Wow. This book was a rollercoaster!I first heard of this book when I watched a behind the scenes documentary on one of my favorite shows, Californication. It was mentioned that Henry Chilaski, main character in the book, was the model for the show's hank Moody. After I read the book, I could not agree more. nail, coffin, done.The book has a no holds barred atmosphere. Not a few pages in and Henry Chilaski is in a whirlwind of violation drinking, drugs and constant sexual encounters. I found myself sympathizing with the Chilaski character as the story goes on. In moments of the book it reminded me of parts of my life. It has a way off pulling you in and then slamming your fingers in the door.Bukowski's renegade and raw approach to writing is known world wide and this book does not hold any punches. It's fast and full of life. I read it in a two night sitting and it left me yearning for more.This book is definitely worth the pick up. It's funny, charming, entertaining, dismissive, angry and rude all rolled into one.I hope you have as much fun with it, as I did.

A War of Frontier and Empire: The Philippine-American War, 1899-1902 by David J. Silbey, is the history of a little known conflict, an outgrowth of the Spanish-American War. Our nation, takings its first steps as a world power, easily defeated the Spanish in Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. But the Philippines had a native, organized army, which actually fought most of the war against the Spanish. It was the hope of this government that American intervention would lead to immediate independence.This was not the case. The United States instead fought a conventional campaign against the Filipino army. These set piece battles caused high casualty rates on the Filipino side. Then war then shifted to an insurgency/guerrilla campaign, and although the Filipinos were more successful at this stage, eventually America won the war and occupied the island. Silbey’s conclusions about the war and American presence in the Philippines will no doubt ruffle some feathers. He views the American occupation as beneficial to the Philippines and its people. No doubt, many would argue this point.Despite this, Sibley shines a fascinating light on American intervention abroad in the early days of our nation as a world power.

Previously, historians have framed the American-Philippine War in the context of an insurgency. David Silbey, however, argues that even though "at the time of the conflict, the Philippine nation was barely formed," to label the war as an insurgency disregards the fact that "the two sides were both states substantially sovereign, using conventional armies, fighting conventional battles, with conventional lines and weapons" (xvi, 215). It was indeed a war of revolution and freedom from imperial rule from the Philippine perspective and a war that inaugurated the United States as a "Pacific power" under the auspices of "a new manifest destiny that saw the United States as too powerful to confine itself to one continent or hemisphere" (213, 215). Silbey's tome provides a brief military and political analysis of the American-Philippine War, arguing that the war itself can be separated into three separate conflicts: The Filipino struggle against Spanish rule, the formal struggle against the U.S. military and the ensuing guerrilla war. Moreover, Silbey argues that the U.S. was not as brutal in the conflict or as an imperial power as is often portrayed. The transition to Philippine independence following WWII was eased due to the relationships that formed with Filipino elites who "came to an accommodation with the Americans," and "in essence agreeing to integration rather than submission" (208). Filipinos, although still viewed as "inferior" in American eyes, were still held in higher esteem than other races. Overall, Silbey's book provides a solid introduction and overview of the war.In his first two chapters, Silbey lays out the relationship between the Philippines and their centuries old colonial masters, the Spanish, by the dawn of the twentieth century. He indicates the Spanish economic priority given to Manila, as well as the regional trade networks, while briefly discussing the role of the Catholic Church in the remaining islands. Furthermore, he details his "first conflict" in which Filipino forces unite, although loosely, under the leadership of the elitist Emilio Aguinaldo, throwing off Spanish control with the assistance of U.S. forces during the Spanish-American War. He also sets the stage for U.S. Pacific imperialism with the build-up of its naval forces (after the publishing of Mahan's groundbreaking book on naval power) and the "continuing sense of American exceptionalism" that demanded a "new frontier" (23-24).Silbey introduces, arguably, the first "imperial president," William McKinley and the push toward war with Spain due to perceived Spanish mistreatment of Cubans, yellow journalism and the explosion of the USS Maine in his second chapter. Silbey informs the reader of McKinley's main rationales for keeping the Philippines as well as the key reasons for why war finally broke out between Filipino and American military forces. Throughout his book, Silbey also provides decent descriptions of the ambitions, relative to their roles in the war, of major U.S. political and military leaders such as Theodore Roosevelt, George Dewey, Arthur MacArthur, William McKinley and others. He also delves into the role of Emilio Aguinaldo and his struggles to unite the various generals and elites who represent the Filipino army and insurectos.In the second conflict, Silbey accounts for the defeat of the Filipino army (the Army of Liberation), pointing out that it was predominantly a "patron army," whose leadership lacked unity. Key Filipino generals sought their own empowerment, including Aguinaldo who had at least one of his generals assassinated. Furthermore, following U.S. victory in 1899 (although this was in reality a perceived victory), the U.S. Senate, torn between imperialists and anti-imperialists, engaged in a heated debate over ratification of a treaty to annex the Philippines.Silbey indicates a critical transition in the conflict in his fifth chapter. Here, he describes the impact of the Filipino decision to transition to guerrilla warfare. By turning to guerrilla warfare, Silbey contends, the populace was convinced that the hope for an independent nation was lost. Moreover, generals and other Filipino elites increasingly acquiesced to the Americans, taking government roles in the new U.S. administration. The U.S. established Western law codes (a supreme court, for example) as well as taxation systems under the guidance of local elites. However, by 1900, guerrilla attacks on U.S. forces in the Philippines were increasing while political (Taft) and military (MacArthur) officials "butted heads." Silbey's account of the guerrilla warfare of this period is eerily similar to the Vietnam War.Although Silbey's account is militarily and politically focused, he does mention, in various chapters, issues of racial perceptions amongst American citizens and soldiers. Moreover, his comparisons between African-American and Filipino treatment by the U.S. is brief, but certainly appropriate. However, this played a larger role in the conflict than Silbey cares to admit. U.S. atrocities are barely mentioned. This book is, at best, a superficial analysis. I highly recommend Paul Kramer's Blood in Government rather than this work.

The interaction of military and political aspects of this forgotten war is well detailed. The difficulties surmounted by the American soldier in the Philippines were more than those of any other war. The American victory should be better remembered. There should have been more emphasis on the civic action side.

The links of history within the War are impressive. It's expression in strategic policies and the implementation qualified by the wisdom of combat give this a history with a soul. It is a shame that this war could have added lessons learned so as to have our soldiers of wars of Iraq and Afghanistan, not just Vietnam have the insights for dealing with the guilt and suffering of PTSD, while not being avoided, but better understood.

This author makes the history come alive. I was given his book on the Boxer Rebellion in China and enjoyed it so much that I searched for more books by him. I wish he would write more. This is a period of history in which I was woefully ignorant. So well written!!

A well told story regarding a war little known much less understood. Well organized and detailed. A solid read for the historian and student of America's " little wars " You get a good overview as well as solid detail, warts and all.
