A good but too short read. Yes as other reviewers have commented, it needs some editing that could easily have been done, but that doesn't bug me too much. It is short, but it has an element of inspiration that many of us need to get off our booties and go sailing! That's the good part, and unlike some reviewers, I don't care who inspired him to get out of debt. He did it and tells you how. I also don't sense or care about his political bent. It's HIS book about HIS perspective. Lighten up.What you will not find here are answers to some of the most important questions. Are they living off savings or income from investments? If the latter, are they not paying taxes legally? If they are draining their capital, how much is that lifestyle costing? Do they have health insurance? If no, what is their expectation in the event of health problems? These are personal, but important questions for someone wanting to emulate their lifestyle. Without these answers, a couple of very very important questions are left unanswered for the armchair sailor thinking of making the leap.
It starts out good, but eventually becomes the same old story, over and over and over and over again. He makes it pretty clear that he and his wife decided to cut back to be able to buy a huge boat and relax. And he talks about how wonderful it is to be able to jump in his dinghy to go to "happy hour" and hang out on secluded beaches while reading books. Clearly he hasn't learned how to write a book after reading so many. I managed to read it to the end hoping it would get better but then wham! there's a chapter were all he does is complain about how screwed up the world is and escaping to a secluded cove is where everyone should go. The book becomes monotonous after Chapter 12, you can probably stop there, unless you want to find out what the make and model of 1/2 million dollar yacht they bought and the struggles of living on it.I thought the book would be a lesson on how to move to a boat full time but instead it was a boring sermon on what is wrong with the world and how he escaped it.
If you're looking for a book to give you some inspiration to make a major change in your life, you may want to read this one ... although, when I finished the book I felt rather sorry for the writer. He is obviously a drunk. References to consumption of alcohol permeates most every short chapter in this book. Alcohol rules his world and his major joy in life seems to be a non-stop happy hour on cheap alcohol. Sad, that. Anyway, if you're a person looking for practical information needed to make a leap from quitting your job to truly living on a quality vessel that travels the world, this is certainly not it. If you're looking to quit a job to live on a patchwork of a boat that rarely moves because you're trying to live on 15k a year, this may be a good read. It's very repetitive. To sum up: Drink. Get out of debt. Drink. Sell everything. Drink. Buy a cheap boat. Drink. Live on 15k a year. Drink some more. Ugh. That all said, I kinda liked it. He's doing his thing. God bless him.
This book is supposed to be an inspiration to give up the rat race and live a live of leisure on a boat in Florida. Apparently the writer has done just that and he describes how. The trouble is he comes off like a lazy beach bum (not necessarily a bad thing) but it shows in his writing. And his boating. He lives on a trawler, (not a sailboat) and the only trip he’s ever made is once down to the Keys from Punta Gorda in the 30 months of his new lifestyle that he writes about. As if this short cruise of just a couple hundred miles, not even leaving the state, in a power boat, was some epic journey.His laziness also shows in his writing. The fact is this is essentially a 30 page book that keeps repeating itself on how great life is giving everything up, moving on a boat, spending your days sitting on the beach or fishing, and drinking beer watching sunsets. That, and throwing in some inspirational quotes from others to fill a hundred plus pages is basically the essence of this book.Don’t get me wrong, I’m not knocking the lifestyle and I’ll hand it to the writer for making the leap of faith but I feel a bit taken by helping to support his lazy writing by buying this book.
The first few chapters were good, but when he gets all Alex Jones/Infowars political stream of consciousness I got irritated. Dude is on a trawler, barely sails a few hundred miles, and makes it out to be some big, epic adventure. Also, how hard is it to get a couple of people with a decent command of the English language to check for grammar and spelling errors before your book is published? When I want to read about adventure at sea, give me a woman sailing solo around the world, not some white, middle-aged, middle class, conspiracy theorist.
