First, this edition is helpful for those who like to see the "big picture" toward the beginning of study. There is a well written and insightful introduction as well as a one paragraph summary of each chapter. Very nice.I picked this translation after thumbing through three or four alternatives at a used bookstore. This seemed readable, yet not dumbed down. A great find.

Unless you are religious and have a favorite tome for that sort of thing, this is the most important book you will ever read. Such a spectacular study of humanity, so accurate despite so many centuries and cultures between. The wisdom of so many holy books without the need for spectacle, guilt, hyperbole, or esoteric didacticism. It cuts to the chase and beautifully illustrates practically everything that's gone wrong with modern politics, everywhere. It's nice, in a way, to see that people haven't changed a whit since Aristotle's time, but it's depressing to see that people haven't changed a whit since Aristotle's time either. It's not an easy read; it's hard to grapple with the ideas; and you have to want to improve yourself to bother with it. But worth it, if for no other reason this book will show you how to spot the B.S. pretty much everyone is dishing out in this hyper spun world of ours.

Aristotle's Rhetoric is a wonderful read, and one which is still highly relevant today. It should be noted that, despite the blurbs on the product page, the Kindle edition is not the Kennedy translation. The Kennedy translation is really worth the extra money for the print edition if you have a serious interest in the subject, but the Kindle edition is a decent (and cheap!) introduction to the text, although it lacks annotations, and any sort of introductions.

If you're into the English language, debate, or just being persuasive, you really should start with this book. It's a little thick for reading material - definitely not a beach book. But it's filled with tried and true aphorisms and directions to becoming a better speaker and writer. Go, Aristotle!

I enjoyed reading the articles on how to game plan to deliver a speech or debate by taking account of audience and their emotions. I have used it at work for speaking in front of colleagues. It makes me a better person- conversing with family and neighbors.

A good but too short read. Yes as other reviewers have commented, it needs some editing that could easily have been done, but that doesn't bug me too much. It is short, but it has an element of inspiration that many of us need to get off our booties and go sailing! That's the good part, and unlike some reviewers, I don't care who inspired him to get out of debt. He did it and tells you how. I also don't sense or care about his political bent. It's HIS book about HIS perspective. Lighten up.What you will not find here are answers to some of the most important questions. Are they living off savings or income from investments? If the latter, are they not paying taxes legally? If they are draining their capital, how much is that lifestyle costing? Do they have health insurance? If no, what is their expectation in the event of health problems? These are personal, but important questions for someone wanting to emulate their lifestyle. Without these answers, a couple of very very important questions are left unanswered for the armchair sailor thinking of making the leap.

It starts out good, but eventually becomes the same old story, over and over and over and over again. He makes it pretty clear that he and his wife decided to cut back to be able to buy a huge boat and relax. And he talks about how wonderful it is to be able to jump in his dinghy to go to "happy hour" and hang out on secluded beaches while reading books. Clearly he hasn't learned how to write a book after reading so many. I managed to read it to the end hoping it would get better but then wham! there's a chapter were all he does is complain about how screwed up the world is and escaping to a secluded cove is where everyone should go. The book becomes monotonous after Chapter 12, you can probably stop there, unless you want to find out what the make and model of 1/2 million dollar yacht they bought and the struggles of living on it.I thought the book would be a lesson on how to move to a boat full time but instead it was a boring sermon on what is wrong with the world and how he escaped it.

If you're looking for a book to give you some inspiration to make a major change in your life, you may want to read this one ... although, when I finished the book I felt rather sorry for the writer. He is obviously a drunk. References to consumption of alcohol permeates most every short chapter in this book. Alcohol rules his world and his major joy in life seems to be a non-stop happy hour on cheap alcohol. Sad, that. Anyway, if you're a person looking for practical information needed to make a leap from quitting your job to truly living on a quality vessel that travels the world, this is certainly not it. If you're looking to quit a job to live on a patchwork of a boat that rarely moves because you're trying to live on 15k a year, this may be a good read. It's very repetitive. To sum up: Drink. Get out of debt. Drink. Sell everything. Drink. Buy a cheap boat. Drink. Live on 15k a year. Drink some more. Ugh. That all said, I kinda liked it. He's doing his thing. God bless him.

This book is supposed to be an inspiration to give up the rat race and live a live of leisure on a boat in Florida. Apparently the writer has done just that and he describes how. The trouble is he comes off like a lazy beach bum (not necessarily a bad thing) but it shows in his writing. And his boating. He lives on a trawler, (not a sailboat) and the only trip he’s ever made is once down to the Keys from Punta Gorda in the 30 months of his new lifestyle that he writes about. As if this short cruise of just a couple hundred miles, not even leaving the state, in a power boat, was some epic journey.His laziness also shows in his writing. The fact is this is essentially a 30 page book that keeps repeating itself on how great life is giving everything up, moving on a boat, spending your days sitting on the beach or fishing, and drinking beer watching sunsets. That, and throwing in some inspirational quotes from others to fill a hundred plus pages is basically the essence of this book.Don’t get me wrong, I’m not knocking the lifestyle and I’ll hand it to the writer for making the leap of faith but I feel a bit taken by helping to support his lazy writing by buying this book.

The first few chapters were good, but when he gets all Alex Jones/Infowars political stream of consciousness I got irritated. Dude is on a trawler, barely sails a few hundred miles, and makes it out to be some big, epic adventure. Also, how hard is it to get a couple of people with a decent command of the English language to check for grammar and spelling errors before your book is published? When I want to read about adventure at sea, give me a woman sailing solo around the world, not some white, middle-aged, middle class, conspiracy theorist.

This is an academic publication, so code brevity is not a plus. Additionally, many, many typos in the examples will waste huge amounts of your time trying to get them working. Several of the examples will never work because they are incomplete. For these reasons, I could only give the book 3 stars.For Kindle readers: Because of the formatting of the examples, they are extremely difficult to read on a Kindle (or iPad, or Browser). Also, there is not enough of a difference in fonts to separate text from commands from examples, and the justified alignment splits up the example into nearly unreadable chunks. Be prepared to spend a lot of time rereading the examples.

Love reading it still today. Reminds me of when I first picked up the book and just loved it in high school. Now I own a flintlock and realize the challenges of shooting one and everything make it even better.

Arrived quickly! Its a great book for anyone! Quick but facinating read

I grew up loving hatchet and went on a Paulsen spending spree. This is now one of my favorite books of all time

108 pages of very good writing. An excellent story about a man and his hand made rifle and how many different owners it had and where it's final resting place was. A very fast and a very good read.

My 10-year old's teacher recommened this book for a book report. She read it in about 3 days, she couldn't put it down and begged me to read it. She actually purchased this for her great uncle as a Christmas present! We all enjoyed this read.

I have enjoyed some of Paulsen's other work and usually find him to be a very subtle and engaging writer. The first half or so of this book is a clear demonstration of his strengths. The care with which he describes the making of this rifle and the soldier who uses it in the Revolutionary War is extraordinary.Unfortunately, the book begins its downhill slide when Paulsen resorts to caricature of an NRA type who takes possession of the rifle. We are supposed to believe that this man has a head full of ballistic facts yet no understanding that, for example, the weapons used by Gen. Custer and his men would have had poor accuracy. The few people I have known who have been very knowledgeable about ballistics also well understood accuracy issues in older weapons, because that goes hand-in-hand with knowing about ballistics. Despite my misgivings about this inept characterization, I kept reading, hoping once the rifle passed into other hands, Paulsen would return to his usual quality writing.I was wrong, and honestly I wish I had just put the book down before I finished it, because that unrealistic character was only the beginning of a slide into the preposterous. Paulsen spends time drawing a picture of the new characters and situation the rifle has landed in, and I was fooled into thinking that perhaps something interesting would happen. In fairness, I suppose something interesting did happen, just not something believable.(I suppose this next section has spoilers).We are not only meant to believe that no one (not even the gun dealers who have handled it) checked to see if the gun was loaded, but that the gunpowder was still viable after all these years. Yes, Paulsen goes into a thoroughgoing explanation of why it was still viable, and I suppose it is remotely possible if not highly plausible. But he doesn't stop there. No, then we also have to believe that the candles were placed just so and a spark from the fireplace rose just so and voila! DEATH! Of course, not just any death; for complete emotional manipulation, a death of a child works best, so the ball goes through one house and into another and into the skull of a teenaged boy.This is only even remotely plausible in the sense that you once in a while see news items of completely random, freak accidents that seem only explicable by extreme bad luck or perhaps that once the Reaper has decided it's your time, it must be your time no matter what sort of bizarre circumstance the Reaper must conjure up to get you. Yes, occasionally, some guy in Florida suddenly finds his entire house--with him inside--swallowed by a sinkhole, but these freak occurrences are so unpredictable and uncontrollable that they do not make any particular point. So, too, this rifle going off in this way.You can see from how contrived the situation is that Paulsen wants very much for us to come around to believing that, hey, guns are the problem! There are more believable and less manipulative ways he could have made that point if he had wanted to, but he didn't. He wanted to make sure that children, his target audience, absolutely got the message. So, he has a young boy be the victim of a literally unbelievable series of random events that happen to involve a gun. If we're going for contrived, preposterous situations, it could have been almost anything that killed that boy instead of a gun. Heck, a meteorite could have hit his house just as his family was sitting down to say grace for Christmas dinner and that would have been just as plausible and believable as the situation Paulsen actually describes.It is true that accidents happen with guns, sometimes even to people who think they have done all they can to prevent those accidents. This is true of almost everything, though, from soft furnishings (thank you, Bill Bryson) to power drills. In setting up such a ridiculous situation and attempting to emotionally manipulate the reader (a child killed! On Christmas Eve!), Paulsen really undermines any point he was trying to make. The copy I was reading had discussion questions in the back and the first one asked how you now feel about the idea that "guns don't kill people; people kill people." Of course, he felt he needed to use the hammer one last time, just in case we hadn't understood his point earlier. Having read that, I expected the next question to be, "Hey, do you now understand why guns are uniquely terrifying among all the machinery of man? DO YOU?" The book is just that nuanced.I decided to give the book 2 stars instead of merely 1, despite how annoyed I was with the sheer absurdity of it, because the first part is really well done. So, if you start it, just don't finish it.

I was a bit disappointed in this book. Almost all of the illustrations in the book are drawings that make it difficult to tell what the plants really look like, only the most general compositional effects (e.g., colorful blobs next to long green fronds). The photographs they've included are much more interesting than the drawings, but the plants aren't labeled. Also, they frequently reused the same plants in the different examples. Although this is ok to a degree, I was expecting to encounter a wider variety of plants and some more creative combinations.

A little dated but still lots of good information and ideas.

This book is excellent for getting the creative juices flowing! Each landscape indicates what plants are needed and also has variations depending on whether you are planting in a shady location or sunny location. It also includes what to expect from your landscape as the plants mature.This book answers many of the questions you have when planting, especially when starting with a blank canvas. Very - very informative!

I recently moved to Northern California and have been looking for a landscaping book that provides geographically suited plants, shrubs and perennials. This book provides ideas, alternatives for shady and sunny spots, planting graphs for annual growth and great arbor ideas. Well worth the price, packed full of ideas for the beginner and expert gardener. You won't be disappointed.

Very well resourced and beautifully illustrated, equally useful for those starting from scratch or planning a refurbishment. It covers ideas and problems you didn't realise you had or needed, and covers them well, with plenty of horticultural lore and advice. Not just for California, but here in Australia, and also Africa and Mediterranean countries. Just what we need in an increasingly thirsty world!

When I recieved this book I realized I already owned it. The book I owned was a few years older with a different cover and a slightly different name. There are some nice designs, but they should have more drought tolerant and native plant designs

I bought two books to learn about SoCal plants to help me pic a landscape design for the front of my house. The other book was not nearly as helpful. The diagrams in this book really help you to understand how plants should be paired. Even though the space I had to work with did not resemble any in the book, I did look for sunny spaces similar to mine and plants that were nice looking and easy to care for. I highly recommend the book !

For those of us lucky enough to garden in southern California, this is the perfect landscape design book if you have a blank slate.
