At age 56, I have suffered from COPD/Emphysema for 10 years and now I am approaching the end stage. My medical care has been through Cleveland Clinic in Florida and I hold a master's degree BUT DESPITE THESE 'APPARENT' ADVANTAGES, I WAS SO IN THE DARK UNTIL I READ THIS BOOK. I did not know how to make my breathing easier and the quality of my life better, especially if it meant making nutritional changes. Apparently, my doctors and other allied professionals did not seem to know either because no one was able to help me even if I asked.COPD patients suffer to varying degrees with chronic mucus production, chronic inflammation and bronchoconstriction. FINALLY, this book helped me to take charge and I gave up all dairy products, red meat, white flour and gluten products, fried and processed foods, and added supplements and herbs. By making these changes and more I gleaned from this book (like acupuncture), I have improved so significantly. Will it extend my life? Not sure but it sure makes life so much better. I cannot recommend this book more highly. It should be given to every single person at the time they are first diagnosed and I am sure they will live a lot longer.

Another book I purchased to see if we could make a difference to my husband's health. He is battling COPD - this change of diet is helping tremendously. In the short span of 4-6 weeks he has gone from having no color in his face and barely moving from the living room to the kitchen, to walking three miles on the treadmill, doing ward work and looking healthy. Honestly the transformation is amazing!

I just finished reading this book and I loved it. I knew that my diet was reason I had a hard time breathing but I kept eating the same food anyway. NOT ANYMORE! This book has given me reason to change my diet completly and cut out all dairy and red meat. The supplements and herbs were completely different than what I was taking too so this is probably why I was still having hard time breathing too. I plan on giving the oregano oil a try since I heard great reviews on that. Here's to a new "breathe easier" life! Thanks to Robert. J Green Jr. for writing this wonderful book.

Best book on COPD available. Lots of information you can use and the BEST information on the lungs and how they work. Don't let the "natural therapies" in the title scare you...this info will help anyone understand the disease.

it was a very helpful book to understand emphysema and copd and also suggestions for dietary improvements and supplements to aid in your body's healing. I was already gluten free and dairy free ( mostly) and have reduced to sugar intake to almost none. This book validated those changes and added supplements that I was unaware of. I had quit smoking over 7 years ago and only recently was diagnosed with emphysema so I have been researching for alternatives ways to support my choice to improve my health. This book was helpful in adding to the missing pieces.

I read the book in one sitting - an easy read - and began putting the suggestions into practice immediately. Six months ago, the doctor was ready to put me on hospice. Yesterday the doc said my lungs sounded clearer, lung function had greatly improved and I am once again comfortable without supplemental oxygen at rest. This book has enabled me to take my life back. Thank you, Robert J Green Jr, ND, you gave me my life back.

I enjoyed reading this book! It is a comprehensive description of the evolution of the speech technologies focused on the major results of research and the changes of directions that the technology had in the last decades. The last chapter is about the advent of Siri and what will happen in the next future. Reading the book you will encounters many and many protagonists with their anecdotes, ideas and achievements.I see two main categories of people that might gain great advantage by reading this book. The first are those not involved in the evolution of speech technologies, the second are the insiders, who were involved either in research or at any level, even non technical, in the speech industry. For the former the book explains how a complex technology evolves in reality with all the roadblocks, turns, and steep paths while the author puts all his effort in explaining very complex engineering problems without formulas or technicalities, but using simple and enlightening analogies and examples. The book will help them to understand what is behind Siri, Google Voice, or every other speaking machine. For the latter, the professionals of the voice science and industry, it is very interesting to see how the author assembles a map of the past and current technology, the motivations and the forces behind it, and shows how all the pieces fit together in a technological landscape of the area in which they are currently engaged. For them it is like stepping out for a minute to gain a vantage point perspective and different points of view.I belong to the second category because I spent 20 years in R&D in the research lab in Italy where Roberto Pieraccini moves his first steps and then I was deep involved in the newborn speech industry.A last little advice is for the readers who would like to move from the author's examples to more technical readings. I found the Notes section very interesting, like a book inside the book. You might read it from the top to the bottom and you will find there some formulas, pointers to literature and complementary thoughts.Now, I'll eagerly wait a continuation from Roberto Pieraccini to look forward instead of backward, but I strongly suggest to read this marvelous book now.

A very good high-level overview. The earlier parts of the book provide more implementation details than the later parts, which tend to gloss over the details in favor of recounting history.

This book deserves 6, 7, 8 stars. It takes a technical subject and does a really good job of showing the essence of the issues involved.Be aware that the target audience is NEITHER- people who already understand computer speech technology (unless perhaps they want to learn some history) OR- the intellectually lazy. This is a difficult subject, and to get the most out of it, you will occasionally have to close the book and think about what you have just read.But assuming you are in this target audience (you're an engineer in another field, a physicist, an astronomer, basically someone curious about the world around you) and want to learn the basic history, ideas, successes, and failures of computer speech understanding, I have never come across a book close to as good as this.I only wish there were a comparable book in similar fields like computer vision, or computer translation.

Roberto Pieraccini's The Voice in the Machine is a phenomenal read. I found myself enjoying every single page. The writing is clear, precise, personal, folksy, with entertaining anecdotes. As I got closer to the end of the book, I became sadder and sadder, realizing that the time when I would be entertained and educated by Roberto was drawing to a close.Mostly about developments in the speech recognition field (for completeness, Pieraccini has one chapter on Text-to-Speech), it's a very well-written, comprehensive survey of the history and current developments in speech technology.It covers everything from the earliest attempts, through all the government-sponsored ARPA speech recognition challenges, to recent commercial deployments. The book would well serve as a reference for a college course or just for leisure reading: it's the best example I've ever seen of a book that explains concepts behind complex math, intuitively, without using a single equation. Roberto's writing style could almost be called poetic. It definitely conveys the passion behind the science. You must get this!

Having just completed a course in NLP, I was looking for an introduction to speech processing in order to prep for more advanced reading on the subject. Pieraccini's book was just what I needed.The author starts out by describing in convincing detail why human speech is so complex and difficult to understand, and to recreate in a lab or a commercial setting. He then goes on to describe early attempts inspired by AI, eventually arriving at statistical approaches that are the basis of most modern speech processing systems.I like the book in its broad coverage, and while I do realize that the book is not aimed at techies, I'd have appreciated a little more coverage of HMMs and EM.At a handful of places, there are some editing oversights that are simply disappointing for a book from a writer of this caliber (Ch. 5: "...De Mori, who pursued a brilliant carrier first at McGill..." -- career, not carrier).Nonetheless, the book is a good read for someone interested in this technology.

As someone who has been in the speech industry for quite some time, I can tell you this book is a terrific starting point for business people and students alike. Pierracini's great anecdotes are what makes this so enjoyable. Whether it's HAL 9000 or Victor Hugo he is employing to convey his point, the author makes learning enjoyable.

This is an excellent but somewhat dated non-fiction account of how the US could have begun colonizing Mars 2 decades ago within the existing NASA budgets and with technology existing at the time. I suspect that Andy Weir leaned heavily on Zubrin's work in writing his novel "The Martian" with one exception. Had he followed Zubrin's plan there would have been such redundancy that there would have been no crisis. :^). The book contains detailed technical work but is written so that lay people (even politicians and bureaucrats) can follow with little difficulty. "The Case for Mars" not only addresses the "how" we get to Mars but also the "why". Zubrin goes into some detail on how colonies can be built, farming can be done, fuel produced, mining and exporting of metals accomplished and, longer term, terraforming of the planet achieved. Keep your eye on Elon Musk - bet he has read this book and has set his sights on getting us to the Red Planed sooner than later.

Very articulate treatment of technical, technological, medical, economic, and political factors promoting and limiting pursuit of humanity's next true frontier-Mars. Author debunks politically motivated economic arguments against our next celestial outreach by showing clearly that we can begin to travel to and populate Mars AND make it moderately habitable with the technology we have now and have already paid to develop. Very exciting and layman friendly read.

A very inspiring scientific and philosophical masterwork. I do not toss that kind of kudos around at all lightly, but Dr. Zubrin not only describes a very plausible and affordable means of reaching and ultimately colonizing the Red Planet, but in the Epilogue, gives a magnificent precis of WHY we MUST go! The very recent movie, The Martian, was very heavily based on the Mars Semi Direct mission, developed by Zubrin and his colleague, Baker. Modified somewhat by NASA scientists, this is realistically not just the best wayof getting there, but based on financial and political considerations, the ONLY way.

Forty years ago we last stepped foot on the Moon. Currently, with our occupation of the low-Earth orbit international space station, we are space residents. In the visionary Mission to Mars (National Geographic Society, 2013), moon-walker, space advocate, Gemini 12 and Apollo 11 astronaut, Buzz Aldrin, challenges us to take a further step and colonise Mars. Aldrin advocates bypassing the Moon and instead make progressive steps to mars via comets, asteroids and Mar’s moon Phobos. From Phobos astronauts using remote controlled robots will prepare the Mars landing site and habitats. Aldrin states that regular space travel to Mars would be too expensive with Apollo-style modular expendable components, instead favoring a gravity-powered spaceship cycling permanently between the Earth and Mars. Although strongly advocating for a US led enterprise Aldrin, thankfully, sees cooperation, rather than competition with China, Europe, Russia, India and Japan as being the way forward.Currently we have the Dutch company Mars One are recruiting people to be part of a permanent human settlement on Mars by 2023; the US commercial firm SpaceX have their Red Dragon proposal to put a sample-return mission to Mars by 2018 (seen as a necessary precursor by NASA to a human exploration); the Chinese have a long term plan for non-crewed flights to Mars by 2033 and crewed phase of missions to Mars during 2040-2060. This first-hand account is written by Roger Wiens, lead scientist for ChemCam - the laser zapping remote chemical analytical instrument onboard the rover Curiosity. It covers his involvement in robotic space exploration from his initiation in 1990 on the NASA Genesis probe to the joyous moment when Curiosity zapped its first rock in early 2013. The authors and I seem to be kindred spirits. Since I approach topics from an engineering presoective, I loved the technical details and supporting arguments for one method over another. I also appreciated the insider view into the politics of space projects and the explanation of why we are where we are today with respect to going to Mars. I presupposed the moon should be our next spot for humans to take root, I am now convinced Mars not the moon should be our next frontier.

I truly enjoyed this book. If we used Zubrin's plan we could (using robots) find a source of water (probably salty brine) on Mars, and then electrolyze the water to produce hydrogen. Using the carbon dioxide in the martian atmosphere, along with the hydrogen, methane (a rocket fuel) could be produced on Mars. Martian rocks could then be collected--using the same type of rovers we use now. Then, an inexpensive (unfueled) delta rocket could be "shipped" to the martian surface where it could be fueled, loaded with Mars rocks and fired to attain trans-Earth injection. The next step would be sending humans to Mars, but (using Zubrin's in-situ propellant production methods) I believe we could gather martian rocks and ship them to Earth in the next 5 years using only robots.

Volney’s Ruins of Empires (Les Ruines, 1791) is a lost classic in Western Literature. Thomas Jefferson like the book so much he anonymously translated it into English. Jefferson believed the book’s central premise—Empires Rise If Government Allows Enlightened Self-Interest to Flourish—best described the Enlightenment-based principles upon which the United States was founded. Volney saw his book as a direct challenge to Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s Social Contract—if you refute the Social Contract, you refute the moral foundation of the big government social programs that exist in the world today.However Jefferson also insisted on complete anonymity for his translation due to the book’s controversial religious content. In the last four chapters of the book (translated by Joel Barlow) Volney reviews the history of the world’s major religions and concludes with a call for all nations to adopt the principle of separation of church and state—only then, Volney writes, can our species achieve world peace. These last four chapters have a renewed resonance in the post-9/11 world.The Jefferson/Barlow translation went through many reprints in the USA during the 19th & 20th centuries. The book was read by the likes of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Walt Whitman, but has fallen out of favor in recent decades. The Left does not like Volney because he refutes Rousseau. The Right does not like him because Volney constructs a universal system of morality without reference to God. But in a world beset by massive government deficits and resurgent religious conflict, Volney’s Ruins of Empires provides a roadmap for the future. In a word, Volney’s Ruins isn’t about Yesterday. It’s about Today. This book was secretly translated by Thomas Jefferson and was one of Abraham Lincoln's favorite books.It was (obviously except for Thomas Paine's "Age of Reason") the most popular Deist book among late 18th and early 19th century radicals. It is very dated now. It evokes a scene similar to Shelley's poem Ozymandias of an enlightenment intellectual reflecting on the folly of human vanity in view of the ruins of ancient civilizations and asks the question why does everything fall apart. The core of the book is a comparative analysis of all the world's religions as understood by a knowledgeable European in 1795. With all the contradictions between them and no solid basis for deciding which is valid. Only for those interested in that era.

Volney’s Ruins of Empires (Les Ruines, 1791) is a lost classic in Western Literature. Thomas Jefferson like the book so much he anonymously translated it into English. Jefferson believed the book’s central premise—Empires Rise If Government Allows Enlightened Self-Interest to Flourish—best described the Enlightenment-based principles upon which the United States was founded. Volney saw his book as a direct challenge to Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s Social Contract—if you refute the Social Contract, you refute the moral foundation of the big government social programs that exist in the world today.However Jefferson also insisted on complete anonymity for his translation due to the book’s controversial religious content. In the last four chapters of the book (translated by Joel Barlow) Volney reviews the history of the world’s major religions and concludes with a call for all nations to adopt the principle of separation of church and state—only then, Volney writes, can our species achieve world peace. These last four chapters have a renewed resonance in the post-9/11 world.The Jefferson/Barlow translation went through many reprints in the USA during the 19th & 20th centuries.
