Informative book

Our family just returned from a trip to Salmon, Idaho and I wanted a book for the grandkiddos (all under age five) and the picture book was perfect.

This book was a biography of Sacagawea. It begins with her birth in 1788 or 1789 on the western part of the Rocky Mountains. It goes on to her capture by the Hidatsa warriors and her marriage to Toussaint Carbonneau. The biography also covers significant events that occurred during the Lewis and Clark Expedition. I liked how this book gave more insight into Sacagawea's life as well as the Lewis and Clark expedition. There was much information and details that I did not know before. It also included great illustrations. Overall, I thought it was a great book.

This is a great book that will give students an insight into the life of Sacagawea. It details her time with Lewis and Clark. It also gives students an idea of what life was like for explorers traveling west in the early 19th century.

The illustrations in this book convey a great deal of the context and emotion. They are very well done and they do more than half the work of the storytelling. Great illustrations of the Shoshone village and Fort Mandan.The book is good information, and it's easy reading. We are using it for our summer home school unit on Lewis and Clark. This is not a thrilling book, but it's good.

I looooove this book. The ideas aren't entirely new. It's more like the author has taken the most important aspects of wisdom and compiled it into effective examples and phrases that really hit home. I've underlined every page. It's really helped me be less reactive, more intentional, more disciplined, and even keel. I wish the book was longer and that there were more authors writing about this philosophy. The premise is simple: focus your energy on the the things that are in your power to change, and don't waste your energy on emotional turbulence or hyper-analyzing everything. The reason this philosophy has the power to inspire so many more books is that it can apply to every aspect of our life: how and whether we muster the courage to make a change, how we drive our cars, how we schedule our days, what we choose to eat, how and whether we resolve conflicts.One of the most helpful applications of this book is changing the ways I interact with my family of origin. My parents and siblings are anxious, doubtful, and pessimistic. For the most part, I am not. However, for years I've struggled with my own reactions to being around them. Every family holiday or vacation caused me to regress to adolescence, and after each event, it took weeks for me to recover. Through this book, I realized that my reacting to their reactivity was totally ironic. I don't have to react to them. Once I became aware of this, it became a choice. Now, I can choose to see these family events as opportunities to feel grateful for my own equanimity. And when I do lose balance, I can be easy on myself, because I remember that new habits take a while to develop. I can also choose to remove myself from environments that aren't serving me.Very empowering, very practical. Thank you, Ryan Holiday!

This is overall a really good book and it was a great introduction to Stoic philosophy for me. However, the tone is very focused on promoting modern busy culture instead of stepping back from it. More like a book to help you use Stoic techniques to do better at what you are already doing instead of figuring out what is really important. It seems very focused on doing big things in life and most of the examples given are the same old tired people we've heard about a million times, mostly rich people, military generals and CEO's. I guess for pop culture, those examples are fitting. I would have preferred something more introspective in tone, but that's just me.

Outstanding. I used to have a practice. Each year, at the end of the year, I would take about 20 minutes to write a list of all of the "bad" things that happened that year. Then, I would take the list outside, burn it and bury the ashes. Kind of a release from the burdens or pain that came from the tough times. They were over. I could move on. Now, I make the same list, but instead of burning it, I go back over the list and beside each "bad" thing, I write a positive development that came from it. I think about what I learned or how I worked through the challenge. This empowers me to actually appreciate and show gratitude for the tough things that happen. Positive change of mindset from reading this book. Thanks.

The most actionable advice from a self-help book that I've seen. I don't know the motivations of the author, but it doesn't matter. So much usable material packed into one place...my version is highlighted and marked up and I open it up to a random page whenever I need some inspiration.So many years, so much pop-psychobabble, yet the ancients had the most pragmatic approach all along. Makes sense, when you stop to think of how much harder and less predictable life was.

M.E. Kerr has a knack for writing touching books about controversial topics that treat the subjects and main characters with kindness. This is such a great book about what it's like to be LGBTQ, the stigma associated with it, and how it is not a choice. Kerr masterfully makes the argument that just as heterosexual people don't choose who they love, neither do those who have different sexual orientations. She also does a beautiful job of bringing a family's struggle to accept their daughter as she is, and the mentality of a small rural town. It's impossible not to like the family, especially Evie, who, though the butt of endless criticism and cruelty, is the kindest, gentlest, and most emotionally generous character. The book says Evie doesn't Harv a mean bone in her body, and she doesn't. It provides a stark contrast to the abuse and harassment she endures simply for live her life honestly, be herself, and love who she loves. There are tragic and comic moments, and I've re-read this book so many times. It's one in a million. Don't miss out.

I read this many years ago and thought it was good back then. This time I bought it for a friend.

Honestly I did not know what to expect from this book, but once i read the first pasge- i was hooked. The language in this story depicts the typical farmer-simple and straightforward, which i would like to see as a good thing.Also, the characters are well-developed, completely believable and totally unique...not to mention the plot, theres more than the stereotypical love story in here.this book i believe can and will continue to stand the test against time. and i know why after reading this...

Awesome book

I enjoyed this book for many reasons, and I think the biggest reason of all was the clearly depicted struggle of identity that everyone goes through. Yes, this book is about the main character's lesbian sister and the effects that it has on his family and the members of the small community that they live in, but it's also about much more than that. Throughout the story the main character and the members of his family struggle with who they are, who they want to be, and who they are expected to be. In that aspect, this is a very easy story to relate to no matter what your situation and is absolutely worth reading.

Evie has always been different from most other people in her world. She lives on a farm with her parents and her two brothers, and despite her mother's best efforts she refuses to be more feminine. Her brothers Doug and Parr defend her the best that they can and everyone else in the family ignores her strange dress and actions. She is set to inherit the family's farm with Doug, allowing Parr to escape to college and to a life without farming.While Doug is away at college, Evie and Parr meet Patsy at a party. Patsy's father is an important banker in the community and has an incredible amount of power. Without Patsy's father's knowledge, Evie and Patsy begin spending a lot of time together. It becomes clear to Parr that Evie and Patsy are gay and have started dating each other. He is upset because Evie isn't doing as much around the farm anymore, and he worries that she will leave, forcing him to take over in her place.Others in the community, including Patsy's father, are upset about the fact that the girls are lesbians. Nasty things are said to them and about them, and Patsy's father blames Evie for corrupting his daughter. Evie, though, has never been happier. Can her relationship with Patsy survive all of the obstacles in the way?I liked that Evie was so true to herself and didn't care what others had to say about her. This story lacked much of the angst that stories about gay teenagers often have. I would have liked to have seen things from Evie's point of view, though, to get a more well rounded idea of what she was really experiencing, rather than just hearing about it from Parr.

Deliver us from Evie is a coming out of the closet book for teens. The book is about Evie Burrman and it is told through the eyes of her younger brother Parr. The Burrman family live on a farm typical of that area in Missouri. Evie has always been a unique girl. Out of the three children she was the one who knew how to fix many of the mechanic things though she was the girl. She dressed like a man and was a loner. Her parents especially her mother knew she was different but tried to change her. The mother thought that inviting over Cord (a boy who liked her) trying to get her to dress more womanly would change her. Everything comes full circle when the banker's daughter started befriended Evie. Parr from his narration conveys the feelings of the family especially how the mom and dad knew this was no ordinary girlfriend friendship. Parr discusses what happens when the relationship becomes known and how he and the family deal with the neighbors when rumors begin to flow. The book not only touches on Evie situation but Doug (the oldest son) going off to college and eventually deciding not taking up a life on the farm and Parr wrestling with guilt of not wanting the farm life and his coming of age with a relationship with a young lady name Angel. I think it is a great book for teens who may also be going through feelings like Evie or not sure of how they feel.

We use Michelin maps whenever we go to Europe, and there's no doubt in my mind that this one has every possible road in Sicily included in it. That's the good news.The bad news is that the Sicilians are not the best at posting road signs to help you track your course, so your map needs to pull double duty as both travel planner and neolithic GPS. Fortunately, the Michelin map is so detailed that you can pretty much solve any "where the hell are we?" problem in relatively short order.PS: GO to Sicily! Incredible! Avoid driving in Palermo unless you have a deathwish, but make Selinunte and Siracusa must-see stops on your journey. And that that Michelin map!

With two friends we have been planning a trip to Sicily done by car and with a starting point in Rome. Let me tell you, the rather large map of Sicily was always displayed on my dining room table and often consulted. Not very practical to consult it in a car while driving, but totally great to consult before the trip and during the trip at the end of each day in one's hotel room. Michelin makes the best maps! I also bought Michelin Italy Road Atlas to be consulted in the car while driving to our various destinations.A very good duo to have. Hope this helps. Ciao!

Believe the other reviews that say this map is big! I bought it to tape it to a wall as we planned our trip. It is perfect for a wall or a large dining room table. High quality map. I can't imagine trying to use it while driving, but I will bring it with me for use in hotels as we journey. Definitely worth the price.

Too small to see. Couldn’t use it. Google maps worked all over from Catania to Agrigento to Noto to Ortigia and back to Catania airport. Did not need the map. Helped at least with overview for planning purposes.

You're plainly of a different generation, or else you've acquired some incidental hamster DNA. But don't berate me, call me a Luddite, etc.! My wife already performs that chore whenever we switch seats, driver to passenger. I snarl at her when she can't scan a map and "read" our route at a glance. She snarls at me when I can't keep track of the little green hamster crawling along its narrow tube on the iPad or 'Droid.Maps have always been an art form as much as a geopolitical tool. Yes, these Michelin maps are almost wall-size, and yes, it can be awkward to fold and refold them while riding "shotgun" in a cinquecento. But they tell you so much! Even when they are only road-network lines, they're loaded with imagery. This map of Sicily, for instance, reveals much of the economy and demography of the island in a single scan. It's an empty overpopulated place! The 'autostrada' skims along the north coast line from Rosolini in the southeast to Trapani in the northwest, and slashes across the interior from Palermo to Catania, but it oddly shuns many of the larger secondary cities which the squiggly old roads connect. Ecco! Urbanzation, flight from the farms to the slums, for anyone to see. Look what huge patches of the island have only the third-level narrow two-lane roads, spiderwebbing the still oppressive latifundia. And yes, this map shows footpaths -- thin broken lines -- to be the most universal infrastructure of Sicily; there are indeed villages in the interior that show no other access routes than footpaths! Are they still inhabited? How can I resist finding out! And here's a mystery! Straight south of Cefalú, a north-coastal city where I'm planning to rent a villa for a month, there's a cluster of towns large enough to rate 'pink' blotches in the Michelin legend -- Gangi, Blufi, Bompietro and a dozen more -- all tightly linked by one-lane roads and footpaths without even a third-level highway to any of them. If the Sicily of Lampedusa's "Leopardo" still exists, it has to be there!A guidebook is a heavy chunk of outdated misinformation. Maps, of course, get out of date also, but less quickly. I know, I know, the future belongs to touch-screen electronics. I'm being disingenuous, deliberately, about google maps and such. I use them too. But I sincerely hope that maps such as the Michelin series are not doomed to obsolescence and extinction.

Never thought I would have enjoyed Sicily as much as I did and this map was a great aid. GPS and Garmin type products are great, but a good map makes the adventure and memories.

Fantastic detail but it is HUGE and somewhat flimsy. Totally impractical for use on a trip. We have ours taped to the wall, which has been helpful for planning our upcoming trip.

The "One Second After" trilogy, or as the publisher prefers to call it, the John Matherson series, has kept me captivated ever since the first book was published back in 2009. My only complaint has been that Forstchen kept us waiting several years before writing the second book "One Year After," and now, the release today of the third book, "The Final Day." I downloaded this one the instant it was available and as a result have had a sleepless night!Why am I giving this five stars? First of all it is a darn good read. At times an emotional rollercoaster with plot twists that are unexpected, excellent character development and a powerful strong message. This is more than just a fun read novel, Forstchen's intent is to deliver a message about a true existential threat to our country. Take the message with utmost seriousness. His books got me thinking about the issue of infrastructure security. I did the follow up research on just how real was his scenario about EMP and find that he is dead on with the thesis behind his book: that our power grid is highly vulnerable to a devastating attack which could result in upwards of 90% of all Americans dying once the electricity is turned off and does not come back on. He has some good links on his website onesecondafter.com. Heed the advice he offers, again this is more than just an exciting series of books, it conveys a powerful message as well.Buy the book, if it simply entertains you, it is well worth the money. If it gets you thinking about being prepared even better. Transcend politics. I've read a few snarky reviews that put the series down because Newt Gingrich wrote the foreword to the first book. Come on people, it is a new year today. Let's get the political infighting behind us. Forstchen's message is that regardless if you are liberal or conservative, on the Left or Right, we are all Americans and should be united behind a goal of securing our nation's infrastructure, to insure our survival and that of our children. Beyond all of that, this series is, as well, a truly wonderful read.

I did not have high hopes for this book. But I was wrong—this is an outstanding book. It’s way better than the middle book of the trilogy (“One Year After”), which was overly talky and seemed like filler. Sure, it’s not as awesome as Fortschen’s first book, “One Second After”—but it’s hard to capture lightning in a bottle once, much less twice. So you should read this book, because unlike most “prepper” literature, which tends to be, um, not “literature,” this book both engrosses the reader and makes the reader think.The plot here turns around the hero of the series, John Matherson (an obvious stand-in for the author, but hey, it’s his book). I won’t let slip any spoilers, but the action centers primarily not around the small towns in North Carolina that took the focus of the earlier books, but around strategic considerations and larger-scale military action. All this is well-drawn, although it does mean that the emotional impact on the reader is lessened, because much of the force of “One Second After” came from that each of us could see ourselves, overnight and unexpectedly, in the same situations as the characters, facing the same hard choices. We thought: that could be us. It feels less like it could be us in this book, but the reader is still drawn in.Sure, the book isn’t perfect. It does have what I regard as a major plot hole. Without giving too much away, the plot revolves around the possible detonation of another EMP. This is treated by all as the true End, that would utterly destroy everything and make societal recovery in the United States impossible. But that makes no sense. Any electronics that survived the initial EMP because they were hardened or well-placed would survive. Anything that was destroyed would still be destroyed, not more destroyed. The tentative steps made by the characters toward new electricity generation from hydropower and so forth would similarly not be affected. So it’s just a plot device to add urgency to the characters’ actions. Other than that, though, the plot hangs together very well.“The Final Day” is a very realistic book. That is, were there to be an apocalypse of the EMP type, this book (and the trilogy) is a plausible interpretation of the longer-term aftermath, reconstruction and resulting conflicts. Fortschen understands what many apocalypse writers do not—that a vacuum in social order is abhorrent and will for certain be filled by something, because people will give up nearly anything to avoid anarchy; and that the new order is not likely to be filled by the second coming of George Washington and the Founding Fathers. Too much apocalyptic fiction (e.g., Rawles) believes that a decentralized, spontaneous, virtuous society would spring from the ashes, if we merely prioritize our guns, our Bibles, and our Madison. Not that there’s anything wrong with any of those three, or prioritizing them. But it makes the mistake of believing ingredients lead to results. It’s just like those 1950s experiments with running electricity through a cocktail of chemicals duplicating the atmosphere early Earth to see if life results. It doesn’t.Another way in which “The Final Day” is realistic is that is emphasizes a frequently missed point—that in any disaster, those with power will mostly do anything to help themselves, whether on a small scale or a national scale, the little people be damned. As one character notes, “Don’t we, the ordinary citizens of our country who are aware of the [EMP] threat, realize the elites will take care of their own no matter what happens?” The same would be true, in many cases, of local elites. Or, using Milton’s words several times, Fortschen notes that many would rather reign in hell that serve in heaven. Oftentimes, in this Age of Trump, average, workaday people are bitterly criticized by the elites for not trusting those elites. But why should they, given what history, human nature, and recent events show about the utter corruption of those elites? This book merely logically extends what we already know, to show what would result.“The Final Day” is, fortunately, not realistic in the other sense that so much prepper fiction is—as a how-to guide. It does not describe how, why, and from what online store Joe Blow purchased his phased plasma rifle in the 40-watt range, how he cared for it, and how well it shot enemies, under the guise of plot. The reader is thankful, or at least this reader is thankful.There are only a few jarring notes, typos and so forth, and Fortschen’s addiction to the word “indeed.” The most jarring note is actually not in the book itself, but at the very beginning, in the Acknowledgements. In the third sentence, Fortschen thanks his daughter, who he says has now graduated from college. In the next sentence, he thanks his “true love”—whom he “recently married.” He is divorced from his first wife. Now, I don’t know any of these people, nor do I know the circumstances or who initiated Fortschen’s divorce. But given that one of the major themes of the entire trilogy is the love the central character has for his (dead) first wife, and simultaneously for his new wife, as well as constant invocations of religion and character, this jars the reader. Not that people don’t get divorced, often for good reason—but why insult his first wife and mother of his daughter, by implying that he never loved her the way he loves now, in a way that John Matherson would never do over a drink to a friend, much less to an audience of millions of strangers?In any case, this is a minor problem. Not only is the plot good and the writing excellent, Fortschen shows a nuanced grasp of history and uses it expertly to serve his book, rather than to lecture the reader (though he comes close at times, but never over the line). He does not push a political angle—I’m sure he’s conservative, but that doesn’t come through explicitly. The only political issue that does come through is Fortschen’s self-declared role as an EMP evangelist—like John the Baptist, a voice crying in the wilderness to make ready. He is clearly unhappy, and says as much in his Acknowledgements, that America has not taken action against the EMP threat, even though it’s more recognized today (in large part due to Fortschen himself). He probably fears that he’s Cassandra—doomed to know the future but unable to convince others. He probably hopes he’s Jonah, to whom the doomed ultimately listened, and changed their ways. I certainly hope it’s the latter, and we should thank Fortschen both for his books and for his efforts to ensure the collective good.
