I highly recommend this book for its practicality in both missions and every day church activities. The author bravely addresses some very traditional ways of "doing" church which have not been that successful. Silvoso also handles some very deep theological issues impacting churches in an easy to understand manner for non-theologians. Yet, his proposals are nothing short of revolutionary. Silvoso takes us on a historical overview describing how we got to our current understanding of how churches should be structure and managed. He describes how we wound up with an hierarchical structure that in many ways resembles the leadership pattern of the Roman Empire. He then contrasts that structure with the early church which was flatter in its organization with servant leadership as its management style and with a high reliance on the Holy Spirit. He then describes how successful the early church was in spreading the Gospel and discipling its people in accordance with the Great Commission. Silvoso reminds us that the Great Commission is not just evangelism but that Jesus calls us to discipleship whole nations. This is a concept early church leaders understood better than we do today.Silvoso then asks the reader a very penetrating question with regard to the success of the early church, which had no biblical canon, to effectively spread the Gospel in contrast to where we are today. He then goes on to show how the early church was structured and how it was so successful in spreading the Gospel, even with its limited resources.Silvoso then takes us on a overview of new organizational approaches being used in the mission field to reach difficult populations or areas which are hostile to the Gospel. One example was the city of Juarez Mexico, which was at one time known as the murder capital of Mexico due to the influence of the drug cartel in that region. Silvoso explains how Christian leaders in Juarez approached this city using the methodology they determined was used by early church leaders. The results can only be described as nothing less than miraculous. The city was claimed for God , and with reliance on the Holy Spirit leading the way, it was turned around and has become a model city within Mexico. This was just one example of how Christian leaders and missionaries succeeded in claiming spiritually dark regions and cities for God's Kingdom using the Ekklesia approach Silvoso describes in his book. These stories of success give the methodology in his book credibility.Silvoso then describes how the original intent of the Great Commission was to claim whole nations for discipleship and cultural transformation based on Biblical revelation. He explains how the Great Commission was watered-down in time due to theological misunderstandings. Once again he takes us on a tour of church history showing how the original intent of the Great Commission shifted and we never experienced the success of the early church in spreading the Gospel and its cultural influence. Rather than get into the historical details now I will let the reader investigate this history which is an important part of the book's theme. Silvoso then redirects us to the Great Commission and how we must return to the original intent of Jesus to disciple the nations - whole nations for the Kingdom of God.While I highly recommend the book an area of weakness which I hope he addresses more clearly has to do with the role of God's law on page 52. He expresses the idea that we should not dichotomize or separate the Old and New testaments, to which I totally agree. This dichotomized view in which the Old Testament was largely seen as applicable only to the Jews is the result of dispensational theology which offset the earlier influence of the covenant theology on our nation. Covenant theology came out of the Reformation and established the structure of our state governments and the Constitution. Dispensational theology came on the scene in the 1860s through the influence of John Darby and the Scofield study bible. It spread like wild fire within the evangelical churches and to this day many church leaders are not aware of its origins. As Silvoso points out, making a hard break between the Old and New Testaments has led to anti-Semitism in past history. I am in total agreement with his view on the dangers that come with making too strong of a break with the Old Testament, relegating it and God's law solely to the Jews and how it has led to anti-Semitism in the past (p. 53).However, an important point he failed to mention was the importance of God's Old Testament law in relation to the Great Commission, cultural transformation and global influence on mankind. The law in the Old Testament is an expression of God's unchanging character, holiness and justice. Too often theologians that push for a "grace revolution" today fail to realize the important role that God's law played historically in cultural transformation and the establishment of justice within the nations. In fact, our common law system in the United States originated from the moral principles derived from God's law, often referred to by our Founders as the laws of nature.While we cannot earn salvation by keeping God's law, it still has a valid biblical role to play in the lives of Christians and cultural transformation within the role of the Great Commission. Without God's law, mankind would be lost in relation to knowing what is moral or immoral. God's law provides an objective moral standard for making our civil laws based on God's definition of justice which He reveals in the Bible.I found the book hard to put down once I started reading it. Silvoso presents a very good case for revamping the way we currently understand the concept of the church and how we have been doing things related to missions. In light of the waning influence of Christianity within the Western world, he raises questions that seriously need to be addressed by Christian leaders.
The most profound and mind-blowing book with actual practical steps to influencing culture.And it’s not just theory, the stories in this book prove that we can take back ground for The Kingdom and see actual change.But it’s the VERY DIFFERENT from what we and the church (institution) have been doing. I definitely recommend this book if you are concerned with the direction the world is headed and want to be involved in changing it.And I recommend to put all preconceived notions aside and read with an open mind and heart.
Ed Silvoso does it again. In Ekklesia he manages to put into words what many younger Christians are thinking 'Surely there must be more to church than Sunday meetings'? The book is great re-look at what Jesus intended His church to be; radical and transforming society. It helpfully shows how this was derailed and what God's heart is to bring it back. Probably Ed Silvoso's best book yet (and he has written some very good ones) and very timely as God is calling His church out of the building to demonstrate His love to the world around us. Highly recommended
