This book was definitely put together to help travelers learn some of the basics, and is not meant to help teach Japanese fully. That said, it does a great job with basics phrases.I bought this book just before traveling to Japan for the first time, and found it helpful for a number of reasons. It covers just about every interaction a tourist might have while in Japan, so I found myself turning to it for help with basic communications about food and buying things from stores. On top of that it offers some information about Japan and the culture there, as well as some basic info about getting around that isn't language-related.This book also gives a very high-level introduction to some of the Japanese characters, which I found interesting but not particularly helpful. The most advanced I got with Japanese characters while there was memorizing what the names of things or places looked like and trying to match them on sake bottles or signs.
I really liked this book. It helped me a lot while in Japan. It is small and easy to carry around and has everything you will need to have basic conversations. I don't speak Japanese at all so a book like this was a must. The feature on this book that I used the most was the common phrases section right on the inside cover. I used that part a lot and I loved that I didn't have to search for basic terms such as "please" and "thank you."
Before going to Japan I purchased this and it was so helpful that I had to purchase a second one for my spouse. They chapters are categorized and easy to follow. They have a section for every situation, its great! I always have it in my purse for when we go out to restaurants or anywhere. I have started many a conversation with a Japanese local using this book. Love it and would recommend it to anyone traveling to Japan.
Great, fun book to browse and practice Japanese prior to going on a trip.I don't know how effective it would be to actually use in "real time" during a conversation as it would be awkward to have to look things up and try to form sentences. However, the book is well organized by activity/scenario which makes it easy to find related information in the same chapter.I would suggest this for someone with limited Japanese skills going to Japan...or simply as a refresher. It is fairly inexpensive, thorough, and well written.
Useful, with a few scholarly bits. I do take issue with their definition of Kanaka, which they represent as a fairly innocuous term for islander. In Hawaii, it is the Polynesian "N-word," originally meaning slave (lit. Foul Corpse). Using it is a grave ethnic insult, potentially inviting assault.Apart from that, It is reasonably well organized, small enough to fit a pocket and obviously written my folks who have a true fondness for the subject matter.Alasame, mi no save Bislama tumas yet.
Took this on a trip to Japan. While it has a lot of helpful phrases and situations, I felt the book could have somehow been better organized. I always had to pre-plan what I needed, on the spot it was hard to look up what I needed at the exact moment I needed it, so then would resort to broken Japanese or gestures. There is also a silly/shocking section on romance/sex that is unneeded for travelers who aren't looking for a fling abroad.
Great little pocket phrase book with other pertinent information about your travel destination, in this case Japan. Great back-up if you do not have wifi or cell service which often I did not. Shows the English, Romanji (phonetic) and Kanji of word or phrase. So you can try to pronounce but if you are getting blank stares just show the person the characters.
Very helpful phrases. Not sure how much we will use it when we are there, since everything is on a smart phone now, and a lot of people do speak English, especially in Toyko and near the Air Force base. But definitely helping us just feel more comfortable about our trip, and a little excited to go.
