This is easily the best encyclopaedia of philosophy anywhere. The entries are really scholarly articles by largely U.S. specialists on those particular philosophers. The depth and quality of the writing and research is Inevitably. it has dated a little since the late 1960s when it was first published but I have no hestitation in saying this set of 4 invaluable books is the first 'go to' resource for anyone who wants to know about leading philosophers and philosophers. Paul Edwards, the Editor, was a very clear, precise and gifted teacher. First class in every way and a marvel to read.

Has a very detailed write up of a wide variety of topics throughout the ages.

Great set. There's now a volume 9 in print which is a supplement to the original 8-volumes.

great resource even though its not the newest set.

exhaustive, obviously

This is a classic encyclopedia of Philosophy, I believe still the only printed edition of an encyclopedia inEnglish -- purchased at a bargain price -- about $30.

After some confusion, Katie'sbookstore treated me very well. I wish to rescind my previous review. They did a good job.

this is one of the major works of philosophy in the twentieth century and it is extremely readable and remarkably complete. Paul Edwards was a very astute editor and a terrific and clear writer.

Who is Tariq Rashid? As I read more and more of this book, finding the answer to this question became paramount. I've read a lot of books, both fiction and non-fiction. In fact, I typically read a book a week. But never have I read a text which as so clear, and concise. Such a perfect marriage of simplicity and information about the subject. I actually didn't want to put the book down! Which is why I had to know about Mr. Rashid. It became clear to me that this man must be among the greatest teachers EVER!What would you normally expect when you buy a book like this? Lots of math? Plenty of dry paragraphs? Definitions on every page? Theorems and proofs? Well, if you do that in this case, you will be disappointed. Instead, what you find is that you will get exactly what you need to understand the topic, and put it into practice. No more, and no less.Mr. Rashid is an absolute master of communicating just what the reader needs to reach the point of understanding. And to get there, he uses a very simple, step-by-step approach. One that builds directly on what has gone before. No hiding the ball. No leaps in logic. Just a simple explanation that leaves no room for doubt (he works through simple examples to hammer needed points home). And at the end of the journey - and indeed, at many points along the way - where are you? I'll tell you where: you will be saying to yourself "I understand this! I got it! I am so happy I bought this book!"I got an inkling of what was to come when I read the appendices (e.g., about the basics of calculus). I figured the appendices in a book often tell you something about the author - what they decided to include, but not as part of the main text. When I finished them, I wondered why I never had a textbook, or even a teacher, like that? Why couldn't everyone explain things in this manner? I know when I give a lecture I try to make things interesting and easy to understand, but I suspect I've never reached this level, since I've never seen anything like it myself. And I've had almost 20 years in school! In the end, I have no doubt that I can use what I've learned. Indeed, I've got some nifty ideas about some ways to try this out, and am looking forward to doing so. So if you're thinking that the subject might be too difficult for you, I'm here to tell you that if you've got high school math, and even if you don't have a programming background, you can still do this! The bottom line is that if you want to learn about the basics of neural networks, THIS IS THE BOOK TO BUY! Don't even think about anything else. GET THIS BOOK!Oh yes, so who is Mr. Rashid? He's a man that is inspired to explain things to others. To really teach them, so that they can work to carry knowledge forward. But he is also a man that is too modest to publish anything about himself in his own books. You can read a little bit about him on amazon.com. That's what I did. He is truly an inspiration to me. Both in building my confidence in my own ability to learn this subject, and in restoring my confidence in others - proving to me that there are still plenty of people that truly want to do something good in this world. And Mr. Rashid, if you read this, I want you to know that you have not failed. No, you have definitely succeeded, in so many ways. Thank you for taking the time to do such great work with this book. I have never seen anything like it, and I hope you will be inspired to continue in your mission. Technical literature is not my favorite genre, not by a long shot, but in your case, I would be proud to stand first in line to buy whatever you care to write. It's that good!

I read several neutral or negative reviews about this book regarding the formatting. I am extremely pleased that I proceeded to purchase and read it despite those reviews. The author presented the core concepts of a simple neural network in the first section with a highly engaging style, taking the reader through each decision and clearly explaining the mathematics required with graphics a physical representation and text. The second section delved into Python code to exercise the concepts and walked through the code in sufficient detail that novice and experienced coders can easily understand the code. The final sections on Calculus refresher and Rasperry Pi are extra benefits for the casual reader. I am glad I elected to overlook the formatting situation, while was annoying at first - it is difficult to resize pages and do appear as PDF pages.

Very well written book with lots of explanatory images, charts, graphs, and a complete source code of a working neural network built step by step through the book. It takes the reader through building a real, working neural network without any required prior knowledge of complex math or any deep learning theory. The theory and the inner workings of the NN is explained first in a very approachable way, then in the next part the actual python program is being created, again in a very approachable and well explained way.My only regret is that it stops short from explaining some more advanced concepts like convolution layers, pooling layers, etc, that are found in modern neural networks for computer vision. Don't be put off by that though, it still explains A LOT of interesting and important concepts. For someone like me who didn't have a clue how NN work only a month ago this book was the perfect eye opener that gave me the foundations for future learning. Thanks Tariq, well done with the book!

This is a very nice introduction into Neural Networks. I have been recommending this to my friends and family. Even if you are afraid of the mathematics involved, the appendix in the book covers what you need to know in order to make sense of the math (most of it is simple algebra) with just a bit of derivatives that involve the chain rule. This is one of the few books that not only goes over the theory but also the step by step implementation (training your network to recognize handwritten numbers in Python) as well as testing the code and making minor tweaks to show how that will affect the overall accuracy of the network. For an added bonus, the author includes a chapter describing how you can train the network to recognize your own handwriting and things you can do to further increase the accuracy.Even though I highly recommend this book, there are a few grammatical errors as well as labels being incorrect in a few of the diagrams. You can still get through the book without the errors taking away from the content. I'm sure in future revisions, most of these errors will be corrected. Aside from that, I am pleased with my purchase of this book. Money well spent and I will continue referring back to this book.

The book itself can be painful to work through, as it is written for a novice, not just in algorithms and data analysis, but also in programming. For the neural network aspect, it jumped between overly simplistic and complicated, while providing neither in enough detail. That said, by the end I found it a worthwhile dive into neural networks, since once it got to the programming structure, it all made sense, but only because I stuck with it.

I read this book after I read Dr. John Sarno's Mindbody Prescription and after I joined the tmswiki.org site. That was a little over a year ago and I can't believe I have not written a review. This book really helped to answer so many questions I had about TMS. It goes into great detail and is very thorough and that is just what you need to drill into your brain when you are first discovering TMS. I already was 100% convinced that was my problem and this book helped me get to the the bulk of my journey.Since discovering TMS, I am no longer suffering from chronic migraine, anxiety, allergies, neck pain, constipation and inflamed nasal passages. I am forever thankful to John Sarno and Steven Ozanich for their TMS work and not only saving my life but changing it for the better, for actually giving all the pain I went through a purpose.I hope that somebody suffering from chronic migraines will please give this approach a try. There is nothing to lose and everything to gain.

I read Dr. John Sarno's "Healing Back Pain" and found it to be to the point and well documented. I subsequently have read Steven Ozanich's Great Pain Deception, which is a fine book, but could have been 100-150 pages shorter. Sarno is a medical doctor and particularly focused on documented medical research supporting his Mind-Body theory, he doesn't stray (which I appreciate). Sarno is also crystal clear that he is not a proponent of new age healing, Far Eastern healing practices, meditation (which he isn't for or against) or mysticism. On the other hand, Steve Ozanich kind of strays off track in the latter half this book, quoting people like Edgar Cayce and Swami Rama. I think this hurts the rest of the book, in that casts a shadow of doubt on what is otherwise a good book. Sarno's work isn't shaky, it's solid and backed with excellent research and results, he did not recommend a lot of the new age practices which may not hurt, but also don't help.

WOW WOW WOW!!!! Best book EVER! This book has changed the direction of my life path!! I have healed back pain that has been with me since I was a teenager--- I am now 35 and pain free (also I am a Kinesiologists and I would say everything I studied about the human body in college is wrong- all the medical information out there, it is wrong wrong wrong) This book is the most amazing book ever! If you are open and ready to heal your chronic pain this is the book! I want to quote a song from the disney movie Frozen.... "conceal don't feel don't let them know, make one wrong move and everyone will know...." Basically this is a cultural epidemic. We are all repressing and concealing our true emotions---- The result of this repression and concealing is chronic low back pain- migraines- excema- acne- skin issues- fibromyalgia - asthma and the list of ailments goes on and on. Our current medical industry is pretty effed for lack of a better term---- doctors look at humans as parts. not as a whole being.. they want to prescribe toxic drugs and cut into your body thats about it- If you don't want to get cut into or take deadly pills on the daily then learning this information will greatly serve you. Not that the pain or ailment you feel is in "your head" and not real.... but the mind and body are connected--- your mind is after all in your frigging body---- but a western MD (besides Dr. Sarno who has healed tens of thousands of peoples back pain including Larry david and howard stern) generally would not ask you about repressed emotions for treating chronic pain---- they instead look at you as if you are broken- scare the crap out of you, prescribe drugs that cause constipation and more issues then ultimately cut into you- Eeeeeek none of this sounds good- Or you can open your mind read this info and heal! It took me a couple days to heal 75% or so then a few more months and now I am 1000000% healed- This book and the concepts in it are changing my career and my course in life- I entered a field and studied Kinesiology as a way to understand and help others physically------ Now my e oryes and counciousness are so different- Most of us have no idea we are repressing anything, and that is dangerous.... this is where the mind body play comes into action- Once you earn that perhaps yes you are an over achiever type A, hard working reliable friend, parent and spouse, avoid confrontation and a people pleaser.... and get a refresher of our psychology and subconscious you can then see how many things we do on the daily causes a split or division in our mind between our super ego and sub concosious or id..... Best of all! Guess what heals you?!? Information! just the knowledge of this work and the awareness can promote healing- There is no money to be made with big pharma or surgery---- just info and knowledge therapy! This book and the concepts of TMS are saving people everyday---- My friends husband committed suicide several years back because of failed spinal surgeries and intense pain------ I wish he had this information because it truly is life changing!

I just love these Whelan Brothers and I can't wait for the cousins story and Sully's! Cormac sounded so sexy and a hot alpha, and loved his woman. I love the irish theme in these books.M.K. Moore did a great job on Lucky In Love, the story was well written and had a great plot. Cormac and Finola were great characters. I enjoyed their story, they had an instant attraction. Thank you for a great read! This was an ARC book.

This is a great book, safe and sweet with a happy ever after. I have fallen in love with this series and can’t wait for more!

This was a sweet, quick read. I did love their instant connection. I was hoping for a bit longer story.

Short sweet and steamy. Perfect instaromance with a burly Irish man!!! Must read!

Cormac has his routine down and it varies little, run the bar left to him and his brothers when their dad passed last year and repeat. His social life is non-existent and he's just fine with that too. Just like his dad said, he knows the moment he meets his soulmate he'll recognize her. And he does.Finola turned eighteen and knew she needed to expand, to try something new, so she left her family behind and went to Ireland, the country of her heritage. And then she meets Cormac and realizes she was meant to make this trip, and to never leave.Cormac and Finola fall hard and fast, their lives merging seamlessly and their HEA well on the way toward happening. And when she shows that she'll be by his side in all ways, adding to his pub and helping keep his dad's legend alive, he falls even deeper in love...if that's even possible.One-click now and follow along as soulmates meet and embark on their new journey. I enjoyed this story and look forward to the rest, however, I do have concerns regarding Sullivan as he comes off sounding like a manwhore, which is not what I was expecting due to Gareth and Cormac, and their dad's lesson. Also, I cannot wait to see more of Officer Quinn and Molly. Ooh boy, those two. On a personal note, first, Finola has an older sister, then she has older brothers, so I'm not sure which it's supposed to be. Second, I'm glad we're finally told Kiernan is their cousin.**I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.**

Finola has never been so spontaneous but something drove her to suddenly take off for Ireland. After exploring, she wanders into a pub and is mesmerized by the barkeep with the amazing tattoos and suspenders. Cormac doesn't know what brought this lovely lass into his pub but he is going to stop at nothing to keep her. Finola knows this is exactly what she has been searching for but doesn't dare hope that he feels the same. Will Cormac be able to convince her to stay and brighten his heart and his life?Omgosh, Cormac is a seriously yummy hero! A man with suspenders and tattoos and a sweet disposition, a candidate for book boyfriend for sure. I adored these two together! Finola is just so sweet and charming, I wanted to visit their pub and just enjoy being around them. If you love accents, steamy scenes, instalove and happy ever after, Lucky in Love is the book for you!

This is book 2 in the Whelan Brothers Series. They can be read as standalones.Cormac and Finola were a great couple. She was sassy, fiesty, and very friendly! I loved her as a heroine. Her attitude towards life was refreshing. Cormac was not only a OTT Alpha, he was also sweet, and I loved him with her. This pair was truly matched perfectly.Their love was quick, and insta-love. This was a safe read and I enjoyed it very much. I also can't wait for the rest of this series. I highly recommend this book.

I am really loving this series! Cormac and Finola (love that name) were a fantastic couple. It was definitely love at first sight. They had an instant pull and connection to one another. I loved how feisty Finola was and she wasn’t afraid to stand up for herself no matter the consequences, lol! I’m really looking forward to Sully’s book!Safety and SpoilersCompletely safe! Both virgins, yay! No op drama, no abuse. One teeny tiny fight, lol.

For some reason, when I picked up David Rensin’s The Mailroom: Hollywood History from the Bottom up, I just expected it to be a book-length exhortation for the chronically un-motivated. It may have had elements of that, but it was so much more. The book focuses on the William Morris Agency’s widely imitated sink-or-swim mail-room training program for agents. For Hollywood buffs, it is a history of Hollywood (and to a lesser extent, show-business New York), not only from the “bottom up,” as billed, but from the inside out. Life lessons abound with hilarious (and sad) stories of savvy cutthroats (the mailroom boy who edges a long-serving agent’s secretary out of her job), screw-ups and hyperventilating basket cases who washed out. The special challenges faced by women and minorities in the program are sensitively addressed (with insights from one-time trainee-secretary Helen Gurley Brown, among others). The role of nepotism and connections in unmistakable (e.g., George Burns’ nephew), but interestingly it emerges that sometimes the nepotism worked out in spite of everything (George Burns’ conscientious nephew). and at other times resulted with the agency being stuck with lazy, entitled incompetents (Doris Day’s son). Dirty little secrets emerge, such as why WMA and other agencies started requiring college degrees (to avoid hiring minority applicants) in a business where street smarts, cunning, ruthlessness and what might be called “emotional intelligence” were and still are infinitely far more important than traditional “book smarts.” Hilarious tales of adolescent and 20-something males walking in on naked or scantily clad actresses) and pranks (e.g. letters with forged signatures from top agents, hired call girls posing as reporters, and even gluing Doris Day’s son, Terry Melcher’s shoes to the floor, since apparently he couldn’t be bothered to wear them) alternate with insight into the world of show-business agents and the entertainment industry in general. The most important life lessons I took away were (1) that if you want to succeed in any endeavor,. you must be willing to start at rock-bottom, however much humiliation and grunt work that inevitably entails; formal education and superficially impressive-sounding academic degrees are no substitute for grit, determination and what Rensin would term “intestinal fortitude”; and (2) oh yes, in the world of Hollywood agencies, as in most other areas of life, a-holes almost always finish first!

What made Ivy League educated young people want to slave in the mail room for ungodly hours for barely sustainable wages, be screamed at constantly, cater to the whims of some very eccentric people, make deliveries in all hours of the day and sometimes night, run demeaning errands and in their spare time, read and "cover" scripts for the powers that be? Well, for the chance to be entertainment agents, to make piles of money and hobnob with the stars. This is the story as told by the successful ones like David Geffin and Mike Orvitz about what it took and really why you had to start there. It was a postgraduate course in how to be a winner in Hollywood and New York. The book covers it all from the early days to post 2000 with entertaining vignettes based on many many interviews. This seems to have been a labor of love by the author and it shows. You will laugh at some of the antics and learn some great tips about how to get ahead in this industry and perhaps anywhere.

I love entertainment business books and this one does not disappoint. Unless you're in the biz, which I'm not, almost all of the names will be unfamiliar. This book has no story. It's a known fact that a way into the entertainment industry is to work in an agency's mailroom, eat sh*t, and hope for your break. This book is a series of interviews with the former mailroom attendees on the good, the bad, and the mental make-up of the wannabes struggling to get out of "mailroom jail". It's funny, informative, and one of those books you can't put down. Many industries have a proving ground. In investment banking we put them on as a trading or sales assistant hoping they will pick up the lingo and learn on the fly. But the agency mailroom seems to be about feeding egos of senior agent's with much more screaming, yelling and attention paid to personal chores. They do mention many of the nice agents as well as the agents who were best at teaching the mailroom guys. My favorite stories are about CAA because it is next door to my favorite hotel the Peninsula and because of the Mike Ovitz aura. Mike doesn't come off particularly well in the book but partner Ron Meyer does come off as a particularly sharp and nice guy.The positives and negatives of the mailroom run from taking your bosses stool sample in the doctor to having nude actresses answer the door. I also enjoyed the stories of the CAA mailroom which had a particularly high level of paranoia. I had met media mogul and former agent, Mike Medavoy so it was interesting seeing his son's quotes who was eventually fired due to information leaked to his father. If you have any interest in the business side of Hollywood, you'll like this book. Other books of interest would be "Wannabe" about an MBA's attempt to succeed at the low levels of Hollywood, and Lynda Obst's book "Hello, He Lied" about her journey from journalist to producer.

Good history book about days long gone. I wasn't in the scene, but good to get a sense of how old Hollywood worked. The stories of mail room workers delivering large checks to the stars, and being encouraged to listen in on all calls was interesting.

At first I wasn't impressed. This is just a bunch of name dropping, I thought. But as I got into it I came to love the stories, the variety of personalities, and the life lessons.

It becomes very repetitive. What a horrible world to live in. Interesting, nonetheless. I bought it used and got a nice copy of a hardback which I gave away after reading.

From the real men and women who started at the bottom and made it to the top and beyond. There is some backstabbing as they all aspire for the same jobs but also the camaraderie of everyone being in the bottom of the barrel trying to get out as fast as possible. Some make it and some don't. A must-read for anyone contemplating becoming a Hollywood agent.

Review

Advance Praise for God: The Most Unpleasant Character in All Fiction “If you thought Richard Dawkins’ The God Delusion was hard on religion, gird your loins for Dan Barker’s book on God because he makes the New Atheists sound like diplomatic accommodationists in his unrelenting deconstruction of the Bible, a book he knows better than the Four Horsemen combined since he used to preach from it. You will never read the Good Book the same way again.” —Michael Shermer, publisher of Skeptic magazine, monthly columnist for Scientific American, and the author of The Moral Arc: How Science and Reason Bend Humanity toward Truth, Justice, and Freedom “Dawkins and Barker have both written books encouraging readers to become atheists. Who knew all they had to do was direct everyone to the Bible?”—Hemant Mehta, Editor of FriendlyAtheist.com    “With a twinkle that belies the canard that atheists are ‘strident’ and ‘militant,’ Dan Barker cheerfully refutes the common claim that morality comes from the God of the bible.”—Steven Pinker, author of How the Mind Works and The Better Angels of Our Nature   “After reading Barker’s book, the absurdity and monstrosity of God is undeniable. Let us hope that Barker takes humanity a few steps further down the path of abandoning religion.”— Marshall Brain, author of How “God” Works   “Dan Barker, a former preacher who knows the Bible far better than most Christians, has produced an excellent handbook for those who doubt the moral depravity of the biblical god.”—Dr. Hector Avalos, Professor of Religious Studies at Iowa State University and author of The Bad Jesus: The Ethics of New Testament Ethics (2015)   “Barker’s scholarly index will both stupefy and enlighten even the well-informed reader.  And it proves beyond doubt that Dawkins’ condemnation was right—there is no more repugnant character in all of fiction than the Judeo-Christian god.”—Hector Garcia, PsyD, author of Alpha God “Rich in reason, candescent in clarity—this is a must-read for any serious student of the Bible.”—Marian Wiggins, former senior editor, children’s curriculum, Gospel Light Publications “Dan Barker accurately and masterfully shows us that the bible is the believer’s worst enemy. I don’t see how believers can read his book and fail to conclude that the God of the bible is a fictional character invented by ancient barbaric blood-thirsty men, as Dawkins wrote. If they continue believing despite the overwhelming biblical evidence that Barker presents, then their cognitive faculties are just not functioning properly.” —John W. Loftus, editor, The Christian Delusion and Christianity is Not Great

God: The Most Unpleasant Character in All Fiction by Dan Barker and Richard Dawkins“God: The Most Unpleasant Character in All Fiction” is an expose of “God’s” true qualities based on the very book that attempts to describe “Him”. Taking a page from Richard Dawkins, former evangelist minister and co-president of the Freedom from Religion Foundation, Dan Barker takes the readers on a journey through the Bible and during this trip he clearly describes the “Lord Jealous”. This provocative 322-page book includes twenty-eight chapters broken out by two parts: Part 1. Dawkins Was Right and Part II. Dawkins Was Too Kind.Positives:1. Well-researched, well-written book. Barker takes glee in exposing the character of “God”.2. The fascinating topic of the characterization of “God” through analyzing the Bible. “The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.”3. The chapters are broken out by character traits. Each chapter begins with a biblical appropriate passage. “A jealous and avenging God is the Lord, the Lord is avenging and wrathful.” —Nahum 1:2”4. Barker knows the Bible with mastery and provides countless biblical passages that clearly supports his main points. “He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering.” (Genesis 22:2)”5. So many biblical passages that will make your head spin. “Leviticus 19:28 “You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh on account of the dead or tattoo any marks upon you: I am the Lord.”6. Traits of an unjust “God”. “Exodus 22:18 “Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.””7. The concept of hell. “The concept of eternal Hell, a truly infinite lack of forgiveness, does not occur until the New Testament, thanks to Jesus.”8. Many examples of “God’s” Type-A micromanagement.9. Traits of a vindictive “God”. “Deuteronomy 32:35 “The Lord says, … ‘I will take revenge; I will pay them back. In due time their feet will slip. Their day of disaster will arrive, and their destiny will overtake them.’””10. The bloodthirsty lord. “For the life of the flesh is in the blood; and I have given it to you for making atonement for your lives on the altar; for, as life, it is the blood that makes atonement. (Leviticus 17:11)”11. Threatening nonbelievers, so cruel. “2 Chronicles 15:13 “All who would not seek the Lord, the God of Israel, were to be put to death, whether small or great, man or woman.””12. Ethnic cleanser of biblical proportions. “Go and attack Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have; do not spare them, but kill both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey. (1 Samuel 15:3)”13. Misogyny and plenty of it. “Deuteronomy 22:28–29 “If a man meets a virgin who is not betrothed, and seizes her and lies with her, and they are found, then the man who lay with her shall give to the father of the young woman fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife, because he has violated her; he may not put her away all his days.” RSV (You broke it, you buy it.)”14. So anti-gay. “Leviticus 20:13 “If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall be put to death; their blood is upon them.””15. The Bible endorses slavery, how terrible. “Leviticus 25:44–46 “As for your male and female slaves whom you may have: you may buy male and female slaves from among the nations that are round about you. You may also buy from among the strangers [NRSV: “aliens”] who sojourn with you and their families that are with you, who have been born in your land; and they may be your property.””16. Examples of infanticide. “O daughter Babylon, you devastator! Happy shall they be who pay you back what you have done to us! Happy shall they be who take your little ones and dash them against the rock! (Psalm 137:8–9)”17. Examples of megalomania. ““So I will display my greatness and my holiness and make myself known in the eyes of many nations. Then they shall know that I am the Lord.” —Ezekiel 38:23””18. Examples of malevolence. ““I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things.” —Isaiah 45:7, KJV”19. Just a plain old bully. “But the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he would not let the Israelites go. (Exodus 10:20)”20. Examples of flame-happy “God”. “Leviticus 21:9 “And the daughter of any priest, if she profane herself by playing the whore, she profaneth her father: she shall be burnt with fire.” KJV (Notice that her “crime” is profaning her father.)”21. And so much more.Negatives:1. I wanted more expert commentary from Barker.2. I would have added a section on how the Bible came together and the different versions.3. No notes or links. In summary, I enjoyed this book. It will serve as an excellent reference when I debate my Christian friends. Barker has great command of the topic and even takes glee in exposing what are clearly difficult and realistic characterizations of the biblical “God”. Provocative and what must be difficult for Christians to digest, this is the word of “God”. I recommend it.Further recommendations: “The God Delusion” by Richard Dawkins, “The Religion Virus” by James A. Craig, “50 Reasons People Give For Believing in a God” by Guy P. Harrison, “The God Virus: How Religion Infects Our Lives and Culture” by Darrel W. Ray, “End of Faith” by Sam Harris, “Faith No More: Why People Reject religion” by Phil Zuckerman, “Atheism Advanced” by David Eller, “Why We Believe In God(s): A Concise Guide to the Science of Faith” by J. Anderson Thomson Jr., “The Believing Brain” by Michael Shermer, and “Why I Became An Atheist” by John W. Loftus.

Great book, really shows the dark side of the "kind and loving god" we are all taught to believe in. I was a Christian for many years and never read the chapters and verses cited in this book. Anyone who calls themselves a Christian should read this book and prepare to defend their faith in light of what it reveals about the god they worship. Note that everything in this book is taken directly from the Bible, these are god's words in context, commands given to his loyal followers. They cannot be misconstrued or taken as metaphor. The book makes it abundantly clear that these orders were to be carried out and failure to do so meant death. I'm sure there will be negative reviews from Christians who have never read the book. Just the title alone will cause some folks to get angry. But if you haven't read it then go to the source. Read your own holy text. Any god who not only condones but orders his followers to commit rape, slavery, child sacrifice, murder, and genocide among other horrific acts is not worthy of my or anyone else's devotion, but in fact deserves our utter contempt, if he were in fact real. If pastors and priests were honest why do they not deliver sermons on the darker aspects of god. The god who made a man sacrifice his daughter to win a battle, or how after conquering a city everyone was killed except the young girls who were given to the Israelite soldiers to "do with what they wished". All on the direct orders of god. This book is well written, well researched and only reinforced my religious views. Even though it starts from the premise that god is fictional, it treats the god character as though he were real (in the context of the book) and that this god really did all of those terrible things. Each chapter is devoted to one of the aspects of god that Richard Dawkins described in his book "The God Delusion". There are chapters on how god is jealous, petty, genocidal, misogynistic, cannibalistic, etc all backed up by scripture. Indeed if you were to write a fictional book today that incorporated all of the negative aspects of god into one villain it would be ludicrous, laughable even. But the Holy Bible does just that, and these horrifying aspects of god are tucked away like dark alleyways in a bad part of town, never discussed crossed by quickly hoping not to be noticed. Dan Barker does a masterful job of hunting down these alleyways and shining a bright light on things rarely spoken of and never addressed from any pulpit.Even if you do not buy this book I implore you to grab your handy bible and starting at the beginning read it, I mean really read it, and think of the character of this supposed omnipotent, omniscient being, then look around you at the world and ask yourself "does what I see and understand about the universe match up with the collected stories of a small isolated group of Bronze Age nomadic sheepherders". And why out of all the people living all over the planet, some with vastly greater influence and power, why was this tiny isolated relatively powerless tribe chosen? As you continue to read ask yourself "does this make sense"? On your journey if you happen to buy this book things may become just that much more clear. Use those powers of reason and critical thinking that we all were born with take a small step out of your comfort zone.

#2,406 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

(Some spoilers included.) I didn’t love the first book in this series but thought I’d give the 2nd a chance. In the first book Melissa, a crime novelist, went to ridiculous, unjustifiable lengths to “research” local crimes. She was pretty directly responsible for one death as she blundered her way to a conclusion. The second book started out promising. But when a romantic element is introduced the 47-year old Melissa turns into a hormonal teenager (or blithering idiot) incapable of rational thought and action. As in the first book, her character and intelligence seem questionable. She is not very observant or perceptive and is a blabbermouth (even though she assures everyone “you know it won’t go any further” and she complains about other “gossips”). There are some other unsavory aspects, including a tolerance of xenophobia, sexism and violence. Melissa totally discounts her lover’s hitting and bruising a young woman (“A slap in the face doesn’t exactly amount to grievous bodily harm, does it?”) In my opinion cozy mysteries should be light, charming and fun. These books are too annoying to be pleasant reading.

liked her first book. second book the main character seemed off because all she could think about was sex with another teacher. would not even consider all the possibilities of who the murderer was. I hate it when writers make the main character look like an idiot that can't control herself. disappointed in making a middle aged woman look pitiful

So many twists and turns with well developed characters and a delightful writer/heroine......I could not put this book down, although I knew I'd be very tired in the morning! The Cotswolds seems the place for UK writers to place their cozy mysteries, but this author really brings the story to the forefront rather than the focus on location. Melissa Craig is such an interesting, smart, intuitive character that I had to keep reading because I got so caught up in her rapidly moving mind and changes in direction with her storyline. Her characters are so well fleshed out and human and likeable.....most of them.....lol . Can't wait to start on the second book in the series. So worth the read!

Love the settings and the plots. But I'm curious, what decade is the time frame? No computer or internet, no cell phones. Cars like the Ford Fiesta and VW Golf. I'm thinking about 1982? Would be nice if there were some clues such as historical references or national leaders' names dropped to help place the time.

You truly won't want to stop reading. Although I suspected the murder, I didn't want to suss it out because I enjoyed the plot development so much. I will move right on to book 3 and I have happily preordered 4 & 5.

British cozy, good dialogue, some snarky humor, very well written. No, I didn’t guess ‘who done it’.

I liked the book overall, but I was not really a fan of this one overall. I am looking forward to the next book.

I love the Melissa Craig series. !!
